— — Goku in "Hunt the Poachers! Goku and No. 17's United Front!!"
Goku (孫 悟空, Son Gokū), born Kakarot (カカロット, Kakarotto), is the main protagonist of the Dragon Ball metaseries created by Akira Toriyama and is used by Gojiran.
Goku is the adoptive grandson of Grandpa Gohan, the son of Bardock and Gine, husband of Chi-Chi, father of Gohan and Goten, and the grandfather of Pan--Videl and Gohan's daughter. Cheerful, courageous, and also a bit naive, Goku is a Saiyan of pure blood originally sent to destroy the planet Earth as only an infant but to later mature with the same mission on his mind. Later in the Dragon Ball series, an accident ultimately alters his mind, converting him from developing onto a cold-hearted destructive being, to developing into a pure-hearted incredible warrior and becoming one of Earth's greatest warrior's and as well as the informal leader of the Z Fighters. Throughout his life, he trains hard and strives to be the greatest warrior possible, while also using his amazing powers and skills to uphold peace.
Goku is a Saiyan named Kakarot sent from Planet Vegeta to Earth. On the day of his birth, his father, Bardock, attempted to rebel against Frieza to seek revenge for his murdered comrades at the hands of Frieza's loyal subordinates but Frieza blew up Planet Vegeta, killing Bardock and most of the Saiyan race; Goku survived as he was being sent to Earth. After crash-landing on Earth, the baby was found in the woods by an old man named Gohanand became his adopted grandson. He was then given his Earthling name, "Son Goku". At first, Goku was extremely violent and ill-tempered, not obeying Gohan at all, but one day he fell down a deep ravine and hit his head, suffering severe head trauma that sent him into a coma and very nearly killed him and caused him to suffer long-term amnesia. After he woke up, he had lost all of his Saiyan aggression due to not remembering his mission, becoming a kind and mild-mannered young boy.
His Grandpa Gohan taught him martial arts and told him about such things as the city and people, as they lived in a very remote place in Mount Paozu, with no communication with other people.
Gohan one day discovered Goku's full moon transformation, and thus told him to never look at the full moon. However, one night Goku did, and he transformed into a Great Ape, causing him to unknowingly kill Gohan. After his grandpa's death, Goku stayed at his home, carrying out his daily life of survival. From a young age, Goku developed the impression that his birth parents abandoned him in the mountains as a baby, leaving him for Grandpa Gohan to discover.
Emperor Pilaf Saga
Goku is introduced in the Dragon Ball manga and anime at 12 years of age (initially, he claims to be 14, but it is later clarified during the Tournament Saga that this is because Goku had trouble counting), as a young boy living in obscurity on Mount Paozu. Goku owns the Power Pole and the four-star Dragon Ball, inheritances from his grandfather.
One day, after doing his daily chores, Goku is hit by a car when on his way home after catching a Giant Fish. Having never seen a car before, he assumes it is a monster attacking him. When the driver shoots Goku with a gun, she becomes scared after seeing that it hardly does any damage and surrenders, revealing herself to be a Human girl, named Bulma. Goku states that he has never seen a girl before and that the only human he has seen in his life is his deceased grandfather.
Goku takes Bulma to his house, where she ends up discovering his four star Dragon Ball. However, Goku does not want Bulma touching it since it is precious to him, so Bulma decides to let Goku to join her on a quest to collect all seven Dragon Balls to summon the Dragon, not revealing to him that the Dragon Balls would be scattered across the Earth once they succeeded.
Later that night, when camping in Bulma's Capsule House, Goku is introduced to various technology such as Television, lights and even a bath. Early the next morning, Goku is surprised when he learns a bit about the anatomy of women after he takes Bulma's underwear off while she is sleeping.
Later that morning, Goku meets Turtle, whom he decides to take back to the ocean, forcing Bulma to come along. After defeating a Bear Thief who wants to eat the turtle, they make it to the beach, where he meets his future master, the turtle hermit, Master Roshi. When the turtle hermit meets them, he rewards Goku with a flying cloud called the Flying Nimbus, that only allows people of pure heart to ride it, with which Goku has no difficulty. Bulma also receives the three star Dragon Ball out of this, in exchange for showing the old horn-dog her underwear (however, she is actually nude, because Goku had pulled them off the night before).
Three days later, Goku and Bulma end up in Aru Village, which is under control by an evil shape-shifter named Oolong, who kidnaps the villagers' daughters.
After Goku fails to impersonate Pochawompa in an attempt to find the location of Oolong's hideout, he decides to face Oolong head on. After chasing him outside the village, Goku manages to capture him, forcing Oolong to give the villagers back their daughters. Afterward, they are rewarded the six star Dragon Ball and Oolong is forced to join Goku and Bulma on their quest.
While crossing the Diablo Desert on their way to Fire Mountain, Goku fights a bandit named Yamcha, who is friends with a former classmate of Oolong, named Puar. oku and Yamcha have a duel, and Yamcha is surprised when Goku brings out his Power Pole, learning that he is the grandson of the legendary martial artist, Gohan. After nearly losing to Yamcha's Wolf Fang Fist due to hunger, Bulma awakens, causing Yamcha to flee due to of his fear of women. Later that night, Goku and the others stay the night in Oolong's House-Wagon, where Goku tells Oolong about the Dragon Balls while Yamcha and Puar hide outside and listen, also learning of the mystical spheres.
The next morning, Goku fights Yamcha again after he destroys the House-Wagon and attempts to rob them. Goku knocks out his opponent's tooth and Yamcha, in a false display of apology, gives them a car that secretly has a tracking device for him to follow them. Two days later, the gang ends up at Fire Mountain, where Goku ends up fighting the Ox-Kingafter he attempts to kill Bulma and Oolong. After Goku summons the Flying Nimbus, the Ox-King stops fighting and tells Goku that the man who gave Goku that cloud is the same master that taught him. In an effort to douse the fire surrounding the Ox-King's castle at the top of the mountain, Goku is sent to retrieve the Bansho Fan from Master Roshi after picking up the Ox-King's daughter, Chi-Chi. When they arrive at Master Roshi's Island, he tells them that he accidentally threw the fan out and decides to come there himself and put out the flames. When they get back to Fire Mountain, Master Roshi uses a technique called the Kamehameha Wave to put out the flames, unfortunately destroying the mountain as well.
Much to Master Roshi's surprise, Goku is immediately able to imitate the wave and makes one big enough to destroy their car. While Bulma and Oolong find the Dragon Ball in the rubble, Master Roshi asks that Goku trains with him after finishing his quest for the Dragon Balls. On their way to the last Dragon Ball, they take a break at a town which is ruled by a gang known as the Rabbit Mob. While there, Goku and Bulma get into trouble with the Rabbit Mob, but Goku defeats their leader, Monster Carrot with the help of Yamcha. When they get back on the road, they are attacked by a robot piloted by Shu, who steals five of their Dragon Balls. Luckily, though, Goku insists on keeping his four-star ball with him instead of with the rest of the Dragon Balls. Yamcha gives them a lift to Pilaf's Castle to get them back. However, once they arrive, they get locked in a room filled with sleeping gas, where Goku's four-star Dragon Ball is stolen.
When they wake up, Emperor Pilaf summons Shenron and tries to use the wish to rule the world, but his plan is foiled when Oolong interferes and wishes for a pair of panties after getting out from a small hole made by Goku's Kamehameha. After trying to escape, the gang is placed into a special cell that will fry them when the sun comes out. Goku ends up looking at the full moon that night, causing him to turn into a Great Ape and destroy the cell along with the rest of Pilaf's castle. Seeing Goku out of control in the ape form, Yamcha grabs Goku's tail and has Puar turn into a pair of scissors to cut Goku's tail off, causing him to revert to his normal form. The next morning, Oolong begins to speculate that Goku is not a human, raising the question of whether he is "some kinda space alien."
Declining the offer of his new friends to come with them to West City, Goku bids them goodbye to train with Roshi. While flying off on the Nimbus, Goku cheerfully says the world is an amazing place.
|“||Amazing... in a day he's learned a move that took me 50 years to master...||„|
— — Master Roshi - talking about Goku's usage of the Kamehameha wave (FUNimation dub)
After finishing his quest for the Dragon Balls, Goku leaves Bulma and the others in order to train with Master Roshi. Roshi agrees to train Goku, but only if he finds him a pretty girl. After failing to bring him a decent girl, another wannabe student named Krillin arrives on the island, also wanting to train under Roshi, and assists Goku. After Goku fights off some Policeofficers, while Krillin cowers behind him, they finally return with a girl with a split personality named Launch.
Satisfied with Launch, Roshi then brings Goku and Krillin to his special Training Island to train them. They are put through very strange training that seems like it has nothing to do with martial arts, such as milk delivering to increase stamina, construction work for strength, swimming away from killer sharks, dodging bee stings, all while wearing very heavy Turtle Shells. After the hard work, the two develop into two of the most powerful fighters on Earth. The huge boulder Roshi showed the boys much earlier they could not push, they can now push, much to Roshi's surprise. After eight months of training, Roshi brings them to Papaya Island to compete in the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament to test their training.
Upon their arrival, Goku is reunited with his friends Bulma, Yamcha, Oolong and Puar. Goku gets through the elimination rounds easily without even trying (even he is surprised at his remarkable new power) and makes it to the main tournament. In the tournament, he is put up against a Gira named Giran in the quarterfinals. Goku struggles with the beast when he is trapped in Giran's Merry-Go-Round Gum, but his tail grows back causing him to break free and win the match, with Giran forfeiting from being scared of the young boy's power. In the semifinals he is put up against a warrior named Nam. Goku and Nam take the battle into the air, and each is almost knocked off the ring. Just before Goku is knocked out by Nam's Cross Arm Dive, Goku dodges and kicks him out of the ring. In the final round Goku battles with defending Champion Jackie Chun (really Master Roshi in disguise). During the battle, Goku turns back into a Great Ape and starts destroying the stadium. Jackie Chun who cannot leave the arena because they are still fighting destroys the Moon to revert Goku to his normal form.
The two continue their match, both losing their energy at a rapid rate. Goku ends up losing the match and learns that he should always continue to train because there are always people out there who are more powerful.
Red Ribbon Army Saga
|“||But I did attack the Red Ribbon Army. I beat the whole bunch and I managed to get six of the Dragon Balls.||„|
— — Goku talking to his friends (FUNimation dub)
After coming runner up in the World Martial Arts Tournament, Goku is told by Master Roshi that he should go out and see the world, and Goku decides that he will use this opportunity to search of his grandfather's Four-Star Dragon Ball. At the beginning of his quest he helps save Nam's Village by accompanying him to Giran's Village in order to get the river flowing again. After completing this task, he decides to go skinny dipping in an oasis where he gets his Dragon Radar stolen by a homeless kid that sells it to an Antique Store in a nearby town. Once Goku gets there and gets his radar back, he confronts Emperor Pilaf, who is holding the four star Dragon Ball. After chasing Pilaf to his flying fortress, Goku receives the ball finding out that it is fake. While following the radar's signal he ends up meeting back up with Chi-Chi who had a wedding prepared for them.
Goku and Chi-Chi quickly go together back to the Ox-King's Village to find that an organization called the Red Ribbon Army has attacked. Goku and Chi-Chi fight off the troops until they fled. Goku leaves Chi-Chi and the Ox-King in a hurry to go and chase them. He ends up in the Desert where he gets into Pilaf's flying fortress while the Red Ribbon Army was attacking it. After Pilaf's fortress is destroyed, Goku is caught in the explosion and wakes up in a forest where he meets a family of monkeys. After Goku finds the Dragon Ball, he battles Colonel Silver, who destroyed his Flying Nimbus. Goku easily defeats Silver, and knocks him out with his tail. After seeing that the Dragon Ball he found was not his grandfather's Four-Star Ball, he has one of the army's auto pilot droids fly him to the next Dragon Ball. The plane crashes when the droid freezes, and Goku freezes, unable to move.
He is then taken to Jingle Village by a girl named Suno. When he awakens, he hears that the Red Ribbon Army is there as well. Goku goes to their closest base known as Muscle Tower. Once he gets in he easily takes out three soldiers and then battles an android known as Major Metallitron. Goku wins the battle when Metallitron's batteries die and proceeds to the next floor where he fights the Ninja Murasaki. Goku easily defeats Murasaki and humiliates him, an example when Murasaki lands on Goku's Power Pole. Goku proves to be a difficult match for Murasaki and even his brothers, so he resorts to releasing Android 8.
Android 8 ends up befriending Goku instead of fighting him because he dislikes violence, allowing Goku to reach the top of Muscle Tower. General White, the commander of the tower resorts to having his pet monster Buyon eat them, but the creature gets frozen and destroyed. General White is defeated and Goku saves the Jingle Village Chief while obtaining another Dragon Ball that Android 8 was hiding from the army. Goku finds out from one of the village elders that his nimbus still works and decides to go to West City to have Bulma fix his Dragon Radar that broke. Goku arrives at Bulma's house, Capsule Corporation, and has her fix the radar. Bulma then decides to join Goku on his quest for his Dragon Ball using her new invention the Micro Band. While still in the city Goku meets back up with Yamcha, Oolong, and Puar. They decide to spend the day in the new theme park Dream Land, where they were stalked by a thief hired by the Red Ribbon Army, named Hasky. After being tricked by her she tries to get away with Goku's two Dragon Balls but he captures her and gets them back. Goku and Bulma travel to the site of the next Dragon Ball which was located at the bottom of the sea. Not having a submarine, Goku and Bulma obtain one from Master Roshi who has Krillin join them. Under the ocean, they find a Pirate Cave, where they are chased by the Red Ribbon Army's strongest operative, General Blue.
Goku defeated a Pirate Robot and a giant octopus named Octopapa while Krillin and Bulma were being attacked by Blue. Goku arrives to save them, but Goku is stunned by General Blue's telekinesis. Goku was able to break free when a mouse scares Blue. While the cave began to collapse, Goku quickly grabbed the Dragon Ball and saved his mouse friend and barely escaped with Bulma and Krillin in an old submarine they found. When they arrived back at Kame House, General Blue arrives and uses his telekinesis to tie everybody up and steal the Dragon Balls along with putting a bomb on the island to kill them. Luckily, Launch returned and set Goku free to get rid of the bomb and chase Blue. Goku ends up chasing General Blue to Gengoro Island, where he crashes in a strange town named Penguin Village. While there Goku meets Arale Norimaki and the Gatchans who try to help Goku look for General Blue and the Dragon Balls. Arale introduces Goku to Taroand Akane who seemed interested in his flying nimbus. Goku searched through Penguin Village and asked many of the residents if they have seen General Blue. Arale takes Goku to her house to have Senbei fix his radar. While at the Norimaki house, General Blue shows up to steal Senbei's plane and fights Goku again. While using his telekinesis again on Goku, Arale surprises Goku by easily defeating him and headbutts General Blue far away. While Goku got his Dragon Balls back, he got his Dragon Radar stolen by Blue. Senbei's son, Turbo uses his powers to create him a new one with parts from Senbei's plane so he can continue his quest.
Goku's next location was the Sacred Land of Korin where he defeats Captain Yellow and finally retrieves his four star Dragon Ball. There, he meets two of the lands natives, a powerful warrior named Bora and his son Upa. Seeing that their best soldiers had failed against Goku, the Red Ribbon Army turned to the world's deadliest assassin, Mercenary Tao, to kill him. Tao arrives to Goku's location and murders Bora with ease. Goku then attacks him. Goku loses against Tao in the battle against his Dodon Ray but survived because the four star ball in his shirt blocked the full force of the blast. While Tao decides to stay in a town for a couple of days, Goku decides to climb Korin Tower to get the Sacred Water of Korin.
When he gets to the top, it takes Goku three days to snatch it from him. Goku drinks the water, yet does not feel any different, which Korin explained was not that the water made him stronger, but the training to try and get to it made him stronger. When Tao returns, Goku comes back and defeats him in battle by kicking one of Tao's grenades back at him, thrown after he pretended to give up. Feeling sad for Upa who lost his father to Tao, Goku decides that he will defeat the entire Red Ribbon Army and gather the Dragon Balls to bring his father back to life. Goku travels to the main Red Ribbon Army Headquarters to defeat them. While Goku is taking out several of the soldiers, Staff Officer Black kills Commander Red after learning that he just wants to be tall and not achieve world domination. Goku fights Black who uses a battle robot, Goku kills him defeating the entire army and gathering six of the Dragon Balls. When Goku leaves the base he sees all of his friends just outside of it ready to help him, but Goku tells them he already defeated them, greatly surprising everyone.
Fortuneteller Baba Saga
|“||I'm so happy to see you grandpa! I've missed you so much!||„|
— — Goku when seeing Grandpa Gohan again (FUNimation dub)
After Goku's victory against the Red Ribbon Army, he is still missing one more Dragon Ball to revive Bora, but for some reason, Bulma's Dragon Radar cannot locate it. Roshi tells Goku about his older sister Baba who can find anything. Goku sets out to Fortuneteller Baba's Palace with Yamcha, Krillin, Upa and Puar. Baba turns out to not be so generous, forcing them to fight her five strongest warriors to get their request.
The first two warriors are taken care of by Goku's friends, but Yamcha is defeated by the third warrior, Bandages the Mummy.
Goku, the team's last fighter, takes him out along with the fourth fighter, Spike the Devil Man in Devil's Toilet. After that, Goku is put up against the fifth fighter, who seems very familiar to Goku and Roshi (who had joined the group as a spectator). The mysterious fighter ruthlessly whips Goku around by his tail until it simply rips off. However, Goku is able to win the fight, and the fifth fighter is revealed to be his Grandpa Gohan, who was brought back from the Other World for a day. Baba reveals the Dragon Ball to be in a case Emperor Pilaf has. Goku confronts Pilaf in his new robot fused with Shu and Mai's robots and easily defeats them. With all the Dragon Balls in his power, Goku is able to call Shenron and revives Bora. After the wish is granted, Goku grabs the four-star ball before the others scatter. Goku prepares for the next World Martial Arts Tournament by going out into the world and training himself by the request of Master Roshi. Goku ends up meeting a girl named Chao and saves her village from two bandits known as Terror and Plague. He later stumbles into a city where he meets Chin Taiken, the master of the Chin-Star School and defeats Sky Dragon, the master of the Panther-Fang School for the title of Master of Martial Arts. Goku goes to Demon Land and saves Princess Misa from Shula with the help of Gola and Melee. Goku later chases after a monster named InoShikaChothat he later finds out is working with two martial artists named Tien Shinhan and Chiaotzu in scamming villages. Goku saves InoShikaCho when Tien and Chiaotzu betray him and with the help of Tanmen, he convinces everyone that he is good. After three years are up, Goku begins his travel to Papaya Island but gets a little delayed when his new friend Konkichi gets into trouble with a gang.
Tien Shinhan Saga
|“||You rely too much on tricks.||„|
— — Goku towards Tien Shinhan (FUNimation dub)
By the time the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament starts, Goku is 15 years old (though he still looks younger than 10). Goku's strongest opponent is Tien Shinhan, a warrior trained by Master Roshi's nemesis, Master Shen - the Crane Hermit. Like Yamcha, Puar and Oolong before them, Tien, along with his best friend Chiaotzu, will eventually side with Goku. In the preliminaries, Goku is set up against a champion from a previous World Tournament, King Chappa. Goku easily defeats him, and then goes on to defeat Pamput, a famous movie star, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals Goku is set up against his best friend Krillin, and defeats him after a fierce battle. Goku moves on to fight Tien and his Crane School style in the final round. Midway during the match, Goku is repeatedly paralyzed and pinned down by Chiaotzu and his Telekinesis technique, at the orders of Master Shen. After Goku is freed from Chiaotzu's Telekinesis, the match continues as normal until Tien decides to use the Tri-Beamattack to destroy the stage. In mid-air, Goku knocks out Tien by using a Kamehameha to swiftly propel himself into Tien's stomach. Falling at the same rate, Goku hits the ground first after crashing into a van, leaving Tien as the Tournament winner.
King Piccolo Saga
|“||"It's time for your terror to end!!!"||„|
— — Goku towards King Piccolo (FUNimation dub)
Right after the conclusion of the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, King Piccolo appears in the scene. Goku accidentally left his belongings behind and when Krillin went to pick them up at the area, he is killed by Tambourine, one of King Piccolo's mutated sons. Goku becomes angry, and chases after him through the skies, but still being fatigued from the tournament, Goku is defeated by Tambourine and his Flying Nimbus is destroyed. While trying to recover in the wilderness, Goku sees a giant fish and eats it, which belonged to a samurai named Yajirobe, who has a Dragon Ball. Cymbal, another one of Piccolo's sons, is sent to get the Dragon Ball, but is killed by Yajirobe with his sword. After sensing Cymbal's death, Piccolo orders Tambourine to find his killer. Upon seeing Tambourine again, Goku finally destroys him. King Piccolo feels this and arrives at Goku and Yajirobe's location, Yajirobe's Prairie. Soon after King Piccolo appears, he fights Goku. Goku knocks him down a couple of times. It is then revealed that Piccolo was holding back on his power, and then he swiftly defeats Goku with his Masenko attack, causing Goku's heart to stop for a short time. Piccolo then takes the Dragon Ball Yajirobe gave to Goku. Yajirobe takes Goku to Korin Tower to help him recover. Meanwhile, Tien, Master Roshi, and Chiaotzu try to stop King Piccolo from gathering the Dragon Balls, but fail and the latter two die in the attempt. King Piccolo calls Shenron and wishes for his youth to be restored, giving him the power he once had. King Piccolo then destroys Shenron, and goes on to King Furry's palace, in an attempt to rule the world. Once Goku is healed, he heads out on a quest to find the Ultra Divine Water, a sacred liquid that unleashes the drinker's hidden powers if they have any, or kills them. oku drinks the water and survives, then heads off to King Furry's castle where he finds King Piccolo's newest son, Drum assaulting Tien Shinhan. Goku steps in and defeats Drum, knocking his eyeballs out with one kick, and challenges King Piccolo to a battle. Goku overpowers King Piccolo, even throwing him into the castle. King Piccolo eventually goes to full power, despite it shortening his lifespan, but still can not defeat Goku. King Piccolo fires his signature attack, the Explosive Demon Wave, at Goku, but Tien saves him by flying into the sky, but Goku's leg is broken. Towards the end of the fight, King Piccolo uses Tien as a hostage, attempting to force Goku to surrender. Goku nearly resumes the fight despite the fact that Tien will die, thinking he could revive Tien with the Dragon Balls, until King Piccolo tells him he had destroyed Shenron. This leaves Goku at King Piccolo's mercy.
Goku ends up with a broken arm and two broken legs as a result of Piccolo's onslaught. As King Piccolo takes to the skies for his final attack, Goku, full of rage over the fact that Krillin and Master Roshi are gone forever, launches himself at King Piccolo with the one arm he had left, punching a hole through his chest and killing him. Moments before King Piccolo's death, however, he manages to spit out an egg far off in the distance that contains his final son and reincarnation, Piccolo Jr. to avenge his death and spread evil across the planet.
Piccolo Jr. Saga
After Goku defeats King Piccolo, he goes to Korin Tower, where Korin tells him about Kami's Lookout, and that Kami, being the one that created the Dragon Balls, may be able to revive Shenron. At Kami's Lookout Goku overcomes Mr. Popo's challenge of speed, and Kami, the Guardian of Earth, brings the Dragon Balls back by giving new life to Shenron. Using the Dragon Balls, Krillin, Chiaotzu and Master Roshi are resurrected. In return, Kami asks Goku to train with him and Mr. Popo for the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament to defeat Piccolo Jr., who wants revenge on Goku for killing his father. Goku's training consists of defeating Mr. Popo, who proves to be stronger than King Piccolo and for Goku to face a doll version of himself as a way of conquering his own self. With deep meditation, being still like a rock, but faster than lightning, Goku endures the toughest training of his life. During or after the training, Goku's tail is permanently taken off for the third and final time by Kami, who then makes a wish to the Eternal Dragon for the return of the moon. At some point during this training, Goku trained in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, but was unable to last more than a month in it due to the intensity. Goku returns three years later at the age of 18 (possibly 19 due to spending a month in the Time Chamber), to meet up with his friends and join the tournament and grown into a young man that no one recognizes. In the preliminaries, Goku is put up against King Chappa, who wants to avenge his loss from three years prior, but fails again.
In the quarterfinals Goku is matched up against an unknown female fighter who seems to know who Goku is, and knows the fighting style that Master Roshi teaches. After Goku defeats her, she reveals herself to be Chi-Chi, whom Goku had unknowingly promised to marry years before thinking marriage was a type of food. Before leaving the ring, Goku asks for her hand in marriage. In the semi-finals, Goku is put up against Tien Shinhan to settle the score from the last tournament. Goku and Tien seem to be even, until Goku removes his weighted clothing and becomes much faster, winning the match and leaving him against Piccolo Jr. in the final round. Before the fight started, Piccolo had trapped Kami inside a bottle with the Evil Containment Wave technique and ate the bottle, putting Goku at a stalemate; if he kills Piccolo, Kami will die too. The fight goes on for a while, but when the word spreads that Piccolo Jr. is the son of King Piccolo, the crowd flees. Goku encourages Piccolo Jr. to transform into his Giant Form, tricking him to fly into his mouth to retrieve the bottle Kami was in. Afterward, the stage is destroyed as they go into full battle. Goku seems to be doing quite well against Piccolo, using the Meteor Combination rush, seemingly knocking him out, but Piccolo blasts a hole in Goku's shoulder, seriously handicapping him. Piccolo then makes sure Goku has no arms or legs to use, saying he will not make the same mistake his father did, letting Goku have one free arm to kill him with in the end. As Goku is about to die, he discovers how to fly and uses that energy to avoid one of Piccolo's attacks. He then finishes Piccolo off with the last amount of energy he has left with a full force headbutt to the chest. After Goku is declared victor, he gives Piccolo Jr. a Senzu Bean to keep Kami alive and give himself a good rival. After Goku defeats Piccolo Jr., he travels with Chi-Chi to the Ox-King's Village to prepare for their wedding. But fire erupts at the castle, trapping the Ox-King inside the flames. Goku and Chi-Chi travel to find the Bancho Fan that Master Roshi once threw away in order to put out the fire. When they find it, they are forced to fight Annin, a guardian of the border between the living world and the Other World. Goku defeats Annin and returns with the fan, which successfully extinguishes the fire. Goku and Chi-Chi get married, concluding the original Dragon Ball series.
Dragon Ball Z
|“||That's enough! Even if it is true and I'm some kind of alien from another planet, or even if you really are my older brother, it doesn't matter, anyone who'd do the horrible things you say is no brother of mine! My name is Goku, and this is my home... and you're not welcome here!||„|
— — Goku towards Raditz (The Enemy is Goku's Brother?! The Secret of the Mighty Saiyan Warriors!)
In the beginning of Dragon Ball Z, Goku is 24 years old and is still living at Mount Paozu in a newly-built house near his old house, with his wife Chi-Chi and their four-year-old son, Gohan, named after Goku's adoptive father, Grandpa Gohan. After saving Gohan from falling down a waterfall, Goku drops by the Kame House with his son, to introduce him to Bulma, Master Roshi, and Krillin. All seems to be well, but suddenly, Goku senses a huge power nearby. The new threat arrives from space; Raditz, Goku's older brother. Raditz reveals to Goku his Saiyan heritage, and informs him that he was originally sent to Earth to destroy the planet's inhabitants and prepare it to be sold, but had forgotten about it due to his head injury as a baby. When Goku refuses to carry out his forgotten mission, Raditz delivers a single kick to Goku's ribs, knocking him down, and kidnaps Gohan, giving Goku an ultimatum: Raditz will kill Gohan unless Goku kills one hundred humans within the next twenty-four hours, and leaves them on the beach. To defeat Raditz and save the Earth, Krillin and Master Roshi offer to help, but Goku does not accept their request, due to the fact that if they die again, they cannot be brought back, since they have already been killed. Piccolo, who had been listening to Raditz's speech while hiding behind the Kame House, asks Goku to help him fight this new being, so they join forces. When Piccolo and Goku find Raditz with Gohan locked up in his spacepod, Goku gives Raditz one last chance to free his son, but Raditz refuses. Goku and Piccolo both take off their weighted clothing to begin their fight. Even with their combined strength, Raditz still holds the upper hand. With the help of Gohan unleashing his inner powers to attack Raditz and weaken him, Goku and Piccolo are able to come up with a plan to win.
Goku makes the ultimate sacrifice by holding Raditz in place so Piccolo can kill him with the powerful Special Beam Cannon, which manages to kill both Raditz and Goku. Just before he dies, however, Raditz informs Piccolo and Goku that two even more powerful Saiyans, Vegeta and Nappa are on their way to Earth, and will arrive in one year. With Krillin by his side, Goku dies, and Kami takes him to Other World where King Yemma tells Goku to take Snake Way to the planet of King Kai for additional training to defeat the Saiyans.
During his journey, in filler, he encounters and escapes Princess Snake and even manages to escape Hell after accidentally falling off Snake Way. When Goku finally makes it to King Kai's planet, he mistakes King Kai's monkey, Bubbles, for the King himself, and he follows the monkey's actions until he meets the real King Kai. He is given ridiculous challenges before he starts his training, including having to tell King Kai a joke, catching Bubbles, and smashing his pet cricket, Gregory, on the head with a heavy hammer. Due to the planet's higher gravity, Goku struggles with the challenges, but eventually completes them. After that, Goku masters several new techniques and increases his strength considerably. His friends on Earth manage to wish him back to life using the seven Dragon Balls, but, due to a miscalculation on King Kai's part (he forgot to take into account the time it would take to get back) he still must travel back down Snake Way, which King Kai estimates will take about two days at Goku's current power level in order to reach Earth and join the battle against the Saiyans, which was already underway and going badly for the Z Fighters.
By the time Goku arrives, Yamcha had been killed by a Saibaman, Chiaotzu had self-destructed in a failed attempt to kill Nappa, Tien Shinhan had killed himself by putting all his strength into a final but futile Spirit Tri-Beam, and Piccolo had sacrificed himself to save Gohan from a powerful attack launched by Nappa, which inadvertently killed Kami as well. Goku arrives on the scene, saving Gohan from Nappa's power, and when he is informed by Krillin that everybody else has died in the battle, Goku goes in a rage, powering up, surprising Vegeta with his new power. Much to everyone's surprise, Goku had become powerful enough to defeat Nappa without much difficulty, avoiding Nappa's attacks, and taking Nappa's ultimate, the Break Cannon, head on without a problem. When Nappa goes to kill Krillin and Gohan, Goku breaks Nappa's back with the Kaio-ken Finish, but Vegeta is the one who kills him at the end.
Knowing he will have to battle the more powerful Vegeta, Goku requests the move to an isolated location and Vegeta agrees. Before battling, Vegeta tries convincing Goku to join him but Goku refuses because he is content on Earth. As the battle unfolds, they seem even. Vegeta gains the upper hand with even the Kaio-ken not working. Goku, in a desperate attempt, powers up to Kaio-ken times three, and overpowers Vegeta, causing Vegeta to go in a rage and attempt to destroy the planet with a Galick Gun. Goku's Kaio-ken Kamehameha and Vegeta's Galick Gun blasts collide, and Goku beats Vegeta in the Beam Struggle by going Kaio-ken times four, however, causing his body great pain. When Vegeta returns, he transforms into a Great Ape using a Power Ball, and Goku realizes he is the one who murdered his grandfather, and apologizes for it, hoping for forgiveness.
After a long battle, Vegeta is eventually defeated by Goku's Kaio-ken and Spirit Bombtechniques, and the timely intervention of his remaining companions Krillin, Gohan and Yajirobe. However Goku had been brutally beaten to near death, with his legs getting crushed and broken by Vegeta in his Great Ape form. After the fight, Krillin attempts to take Vegeta's life using Yajirobe's katana, but is stopped by Goku, who convinces him to spare his life to give him a second chance at changing his evil ways and hopes to have a rematch one day.

— — Goku towards Frieza (Defeat Frieza, Goku! The Tears of the Proud Saiyan Prince!)
After the battle with Vegeta, Goku is severely injured, and Korin is out of Senzu Beans, so Goku has to stay behind in Wukong Hospital with Chi-Chi while Gohan, Krillin, and Bulma go to planet Namek to find the Namekian Dragon Balls in order to revive their fallen friends. After a few weeks, Korin grows a new batch of beans and sends Yajirobe to give one to Goku, which heals him completely. Goku then uses Dr. Brief's new spaceship, which he constructed from Goku's original Attack Ball, to go to Namek. During his trip to Namek, the artificial gravity machine in Goku's ship malfunctions, causing it to create 100x earth's gravity, nearly crushing Goku. When he is finally able to gain control of the machine, however, he decides to leave it on this high setting in order to train to fight Frieza. However King Kai advises him to steer clear of Frieza, claiming that he is the strongest being in the universe and that Goku would stand no chance against his evil might.
Arriving on Namek, once again Goku enters a battle already in progress, this time saving Gohan, Krillin, and Vegeta from the assault of Recoome, a member of Frieza's elite fighting squad, the Ginyu Force, who were called to dispose of the three. oku heals the three of them with Senzu Beans, and shows his new powers by defeating Recoome with one elbow to the stomach, and then takes on Burter and Jeice together. Goku fools them into thinking his power level is only 5,000, because Goku rose his power in only the instant he attacked. After dodging Jeice and Burter's attacks, Goku then takes out Burter, but is taken by surprise by the leader of the Force, Captain Ginyu, who has the ability to switch bodies with anyone he sees fit. After a little sparring, Goku powers up in front of Ginyu, with his power level scaring Ginyu and Jeice, as it was much higher than theirs. Critically injuring himself, Captain Ginyu then swaps bodies with the more powerful Goku but is not able to fully control his new body and power. Vegeta takes this chance to battle him, seriously injuring Goku's body. Goku manages to get his body back after intercepting a beam sent by Captain Ginyu to swap bodies with Vegeta.
Goku's body, worn out and beaten, uses a Medical Machine inside Frieza's spaceship taking several hours to heal. When he emerges, once again it is to join a battle in progress, where Vegeta meets his doom against Frieza. Goku hears Vegeta's tearful departing speech about the torture Frieza inflicted on Vegeta and the Saiyans, and buries Vegeta and gives his respects. In anger, he declares that he will defeat Frieza in the name of the Saiyans and Namekians he killed. Goku and Frieza's battle begins, with Goku still having a decent amount of confidence in his abilities. Goku and Frieza start off evenly matched, but Frieza gains the upper hand and Goku is quickly overcome. Goku's confidence transforms into frustration and fright at Frieza's power. Even with Frieza giving himself handicaps (such as not using his hands), Goku still cannot outmatch the tyrant.
|“||For Gohan. Chi-Chi. Everyone on Earth and the future of Namek. I am not about to give up. Less than 50% power or not, if I pull off a Kaio-ken x20, I at least stand a chance. I just have to give it my all, and show this guy you do not mess with me and my friends||„|
— — Goku in "Kaio-Ken Times Twenty! An All-or-Nothing Kamehame-Ha!"
After Goku combines Kaio-ken x20 and his Kamehameha to no effect, Frieza starts pummeling Goku, but Goku remembers his Spirit Bomb ability and decides to gather energy, leaving himself open. Piccolo (who had been resurrected and was transported to Namek to help), Gohan and Krillin attempt to distract Frieza from Goku so he can gather the energy. Finally, with all his might, Goku launches the attack, which hits a struggling Frieza, and seemingly destroys him, along with a good portion of Namek in a devastating explosion. Worn out, Goku begins to laugh, along with his friends, who believe Frieza has been defeated. But even Goku's most powerful attack, the Large Spirit Bomb, fails to kill Frieza.
Finally, when Frieza kills Krillin and critically injures Piccolo, Goku, in anger, taps into his inner power reserves and transforms into a Super Saiyan.
|“||Before I am done, he will bleed.||„|
— — Goku speaking to King Kai in "Avenge the Fallen, Goku! Countdown to the Planet's Destruction!"
He eventually battles Frieza and at first, against Frieza at 70% power, Goku easily outmatches him. Goku then taunts Frieza into going to 100%, saying how due to the damage sustained in his 70% form, he won't be able to hold onto his full power for long. After Frieza attempts to destroy Namek, Frieza finally goes to 100% power. At first, it seems that Frieza has outmatched Goku, but then Frieza is shocked to hear that Goku was holding back and was relieved that that wasn't his full power. As time goes on, Frieza begins to lose his stamina and his power level drops like a stone. Goku then states he no longer wishes to fight Frieza because he says it is pointless. Goku then flies off and lets the space tyrant go. In desperation and frustration, Frieza uses his Death Saucer attack, creating two pink Destructo Discs and throwing them at Goku. Goku moves too quickly for the attack and maneuvers himself so that Frieza is in between him and the disks. Goku yells a warning to Frieza, but Frieza is too slow and is cut in half, losing an arm in addition to his legs. The weak tyrant begs Goku to help him. Goku, believing that Frieza does not deserve to be forgiven or spared, gives him some of his energy as a show of mercy. Bitter at his defeat, Frieza uses it to launch a powerful energy wave at Goku. Goku notices the blast and fires an Angry Kamehameha at Frieza, defeating him.
Goku then flies to Frieza's spaceship and presses buttons to try to cause the ship to fly, however, it does not work and Frieza's spaceship falls into the lava. He quickly escapes Namek using one of the Ginyu Force space pods. The pod takes Goku to Planet Yardrat, which was going to be the Ginyu Force's next target. His friends, who were teleported to Earth by a wish made with the Namekian Dragon Balls, believe him to be dead. However, months later, when they attempt to revive Goku and Krillin by warping them to the check-in station, they learn that Goku is alive. Then they decide to transport him back to Earth, he declines, stating that he'll return later. While on Yardrat, Goku learns a new technique called the Instant Transmission.

— — Goku towards Dr. Gero and Android 19 (FUNimation dub)
Two years later, Goku returns to Earth where he is confronted by Trunks, the half-Saiyan son of Vegeta and Bulma from the future. The teenage Super Saiyan had just killed both Mecha-Frieza and his father King Cold a few moments before Goku's arrival. Trunks then tests Goku's Super Saiyan strength in battle by assaulting him furiously with his sword, which Goku knocks away multiple times with one finger (albeit charged with energy), claiming that he knew Trunks would not use his full power. Satisfied, Trunks gives Goku medicine for a heart virus that he will contract in one or two years, telling him to use it when he starts feeling the virus' effects. Future Trunks also warns him about two androids that will threaten the Earth in three years. Goku, Gohan and Piccolo then spend the next three years training for this new threat. However, Future Trunks' visit somehow alters the onset of the virus, so it does not manifest during those three years (six months prior to the Androids arrival), and therefore Goku does not use the medicine seeing no point in taking it when there seems to be nothing wrong with him. Three years later, two androids, Dr. Gero (as Android 20) and Android 19, appear and attack a city.
The Z Fighters confront them, and Yamcha is first to be attacked, having been impaled by Dr. Gero's hand and having his energy stolen. However, he is saved by the use of a Senzu Bean, and the Z Fighters lead the two killing machines out of the city to fight. Despite being a Super Saiyan, Goku is bested by Android 19 when he begins to drastically weaken from the heart disease he was warned of, which starts manifesting itself during the fight. However, Vegeta, who now is a Super Saiyan as well, manages to save Goku before he can be defeated by the androids, and, after toying with it for a bit, destroys Android 19 with ease, enjoying the battle greatly. Yamcha takes Goku to Chi-Chi to get the medicine that will save his life from the killer virus. Meanwhile, the rest of the Z Fighters learn from Trunks, who has returned to help them fight the androids, that history had somehow been altered, and that the androids of his time, Future Android 17 and Future Android 18, had not been the ones they were fighting. Soon after, Dr. Gero states he will unleash No.17 and No.18, and he flees from the battlefield. They try to stop Dr. Gero from activating them but fail. However, once Dr. Gero activates 17 and 18, they are revealed to be unruly and kill him, and activate another android, Android 16, as well, who was solely created to be Goku's assassin.

— — Goku encouraging Gohan to defeat Cell (FUNimation dub)
While the Z-Fighters try and fail to stop the androids, Piccolo (who had recently fused with Kami) discovers a new threat named Cell, a large biological life form created by Dr. Gero, made with DNA taken from Goku, his allies, and foes they fought in the past. Cell was designed to absorb Androids 17 and 18 in order to achieve a perfect state, kill Goku, and conquer the cosmos. Cell hunts down the androids and absorbs Android 17, transforming into his second stage. Meanwhile, Goku heals from his sickness and takes Gohan, Vegeta, and Future Trunks to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber at Kami's Lookout to obtain a year of training in one day under heavy gravity and incredibly volatile temperatures. Vegeta and Future Trunks go in first and while Goku and Gohan enter the Time Chamber next, go to find and fight Cell. While in the chamber, Goku gets to Super Saiyan Third Grade and Gohan believes that Goku can beat Cell with this power, however Goku explains that his speed has decreased in that form and the power to keep the form is too much. Goku realizes that half Saiyan hybrids like Future Trunks can turn Super Saiyan, so he trains Gohan intensely and helps him become a Super Saiyan as well. During this training, Goku notices that the potential Gohan has can easily surpass Goku's own powers, especially after Gohan managed during their training to transform into an unprecedented Super Saiyan level before losing consciousness during a training session, and that, if he is unable to kill Cell, Gohan will.
While Goku trains, Cell absorbs Android 18 and reaches his perfect form thanks to Vegeta's interests to fight Cell in his perfect form. Vegeta was easily defeated when he challenged Cell, as did Trunks, who failed because his new Super Saiyan Third Gradeform had too much muscle mass to hit Cell quick enough, a flaw Goku noticed in the chamber. After Goku and Gohan finish their training, Cell announces that he will be holding the Cell Games in ten more days, in order to give a chance to anyone who wants to challenge him.
For ten days, Goku and Gohan stay on Earth to train and relax while maintaining their Super Saiyan form the entire time. Goku also uses this time to travel to New Namek to ask Dende to be the new guardian of Earth, as Piccolo had fused with Kami in an attempt to stop Cell, and the fusion had made the Dragon Balls useless. After Dende creates new Dragon Balls based on the old ones, Goku searches for those reactivated Dragon Balls in order to use them after they defeat Cell to correct everything Cell had put wrong.
After ten days have passed, the Z Fighters head to the Cell Games. After the supposed strongest person on Earth, Mr. Satan, is easily defeated, Goku offers to be the first Z Fighter to fight Cell, believing that he is no match for the villain in order to truly test Cell's abilities. Goku finds himself almost equally matched but still at a disadvantage against a heavily suppressed Perfect Cell in every way, and cannot seem to gain the upper hand after many attempts. Even after trying the Instant Kamehameha (a combination of the Instant Transmission and Kamehameha), which destroys Perfect Cell's upper half, he watches in horror as the android regenerates easily, thanks to Piccolo's cells in his body. After getting tired and worn out, Goku decides to give up and leave the battle to Gohan, whom he is convinced has the hidden power necessary to defeat Cell.
Gohan then states that Goku had been holding back, only to learn he had not, leading to the conclusion that Gohan may be stronger than Goku, who was fighting at full power. Gohan then powers up to a point where his energy eclipses even Goku's, and fights with Cell, but halfheartedly. After Gohan tells Cell that when he gets angry he gets much stronger, Cell starts to get curious and tries to force Gohan's inner powers out of him by making his children, the Cell Jrs, attack Gohan's friends and his father. All the Z fighters cannot beat the Cell Jrs, including Goku, who was worn out from his battle with Cell. After Android 16 attempted self-destruct on Cell, who blasted him, 16 asks Mr. Satan to bring him (his remaining Android head) to Gohan, and he then tries to convince Gohan that fighting is sometimes needed. When Cell destroys Android 16's head, this triggers a change in Gohan, forcing him to ascend to Super Saiyan 2, a form in which he greatly surpasses Perfect Cell, even after the behemoth decides to unleash his earth-shattering Full Power and a further powered up Power Weighted form, which Gohan easily overcomes to the point of forcing him to regurgitate Android 18 because of the damage he has sustained.
When a beaten Cell tries to destroy the Earth as a last resort, Goku is forced to step in with his "Instant Transmission" technique when Cell is about to trigger his self-destruction. He teleports them both to King Kai's Planet, where he is killed by the explosion Cell caused, along with King Kai and his pets Bubbles and Gregory. However, Cell is able to reconstruct himself as Super Perfect Cell, a trick even Cell himself did not know he had and uses the recently learned Instant Transmission to go back to Earth.
Goku then motivates Gohan from the Other World to help fuel Gohan's Kamehameha wave against the reconstructed Super Perfect Cell, which, after a lengthy beam lock, successfully obliterates him.
After Cell's defeat, Goku insists that he should stay dead, even though they could resurrect him, because he has attracted too many problems to Earth, like Frieza and the Red Ribbon Androids. Goku decides it will be safer for Earth if he does not return, and Earth has Gohan to protect it if needed.

— — Goku to Pikkon after transforming into a Super Saiyan
During a filler portion only seen within the anime, Goku is shown on Snake Way with King Kai, Bubbles, and Gregory after the battle with Cell left the great king without his planet. King Kai insists they head to the Grand Kai's planet to go see the Grand Kaiand enter the Other World Tournament. The winner would be trained personally by the mighty Grand Kai himself. When they arrive, they confront King Kai's rival, the West Kai, accompanied by his strongest fighter, Pikkon. Grand Kai instructs Pikkon to travel to Hell and stop Cell, Frieza, King Cold, and the Ginyu Force from causing havoc. Goku accompanies Pikkon to the fight and takes down the Ginyu Force, only to be astonished when Pikkon takes down Cell with ease, and proceeds to fell Frieza and King Cold with one blow. Upon his return to King Kai, Goku is welcomed by many of King Kai's powerful warriors, such as Olibu, who was once the hero of Earth. During the Tournament, Goku easily makes his way through the tournament by defeating Caterpy of the South Kai,Arqua of the East Kai, and Maraikoh of the West Kai. Goku then faces off with Pikkon in the finals. After a long fight, they are both disqualified on a technicality, but the Grand Kai allows them both to train under him. Over the next seven years, while Goku is training in Other World he achieves Super Saiyan 2 and Super Saiyan 3. The latter of which boosts his power even beyond his already powerful Super Saiyan 2, but delivers an excruciating strain and immeasurable ki consumption.
|“||Why'd I have to get this guy? Sure he's big, but he kinda looks dumb to me.||„|
— — Goku commenting on Yakon's appearance
Seven years later, Goku is given special permission to return to Earth for one day to participate in the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament, which he knows Gohan, Vegeta, Trunks, and his youngest son Goten, will be attending. Upon his return he meets his second child, Goten, who had been born after his death in the Cell Games, and Videl, Gohan's girlfriend from his high school who is the daughter of Mr. Satan, the fraud who received the credit for saving the world from Cell. Goku was going to be set up against Vegeta in the 6th match, finally being able to settle their rivalry, but had to be postponed because Videl was beaten badly by the supposed weakling Spopovich, who, along with Yamu, is controlled by the evil wizard Babidi. While Gohan is matched up against Kibito (the assistant of Shin, who was in the tournament as well), Spopovich and Yamu both steal Gohan's Super Saiyan 2 energy and left the tournament while all the Z Fighters in the tournament ditched the tournament to follow them to Babidi.
Shin and Kibito introduced themselves and informed the Z Fighters about the plans of Babidi who wishes to bring destruction and terror across the whole universe by bringing back his extremely evil monster puppet by the name of Majin Buu. The Z Warriors follow Spopovich to Babidi's ship where they are ambushed by Dabura, the powerful ruler of the Demon Realm, who kills Kibito and turns Krillin and Piccolo to stone. Goku, Gohan, Vegeta and Shin enter Babidi's ship and they take turns defeating each of his minions on each room of the ship, their power leaving Shin in awe. Goku fights Yakon who absorbs his energy, but Goku kills him by overpowering and exploding him. While Gohan is against Dabura, Vegeta complains that he can do better. When Babidi hears that, he possesses Vegeta through the evil in his heart and turns him into Majin Vegeta making him evil once again. They are transported back to the tournament, where Vegeta blows up part of the stadium, killing many people, to force Goku into a fight. Albeit reluctantly, Goku agrees. Goku and Vegeta are both transported to a deserted landscape for them to settle their battle, while Gohan and Shin continue on to stop Babidi.

— — Goku toward Majin Buu
Goku and Majin Vegeta have an earth-shattering battle which gives more than enough energy for Majin Buu's awakening. Although they are evenly matched at Super Saiyan 2, Goku is not surprised Vegeta has pushed his limits in training over the past seven years. However Goku is horrified when Vegeta admits he allowed Babidi to take control of him so he can reawaken the evil in him and defeat Goku, who condemns Vegeta for using this as an excuse for betraying his family. The battle abruptly ends when Goku senses that Majin Buu has been released and pleads with Vegeta to help him defeat Majin Buu. Vegeta refuses to listen, even when told Majin Buu will kill his family, but Goku punches him down for bluffing. In a false show of agreement, Vegeta knocks Goku out from behind while he is getting a Senzu Bean out of a bag. Vegeta then eats the only Senzu Bean left and flies off to face Majin Buu alone. Upon awakening, Goku could sense neither Vegeta nor Gohan anywhere and comes to the conclusion that they have been killed in the battle (when actually Gohan was narrowly saved by the badly injured Supreme Kai, and only Vegeta died in a vain attempt to try and eradicate Majin Buu). He heads to Kami's Lookout and is healed by Dende, who confirms that Vegeta sacrificed himself in an attempt to destroy Majin Buu. After transporting everyone to the Lookout, he tells the bad news to them. With the little time he has left on Earth, with the help of Piccolo, he decides to teach Trunks and Goten the Fusion Dance, which he learned from Metamorans while in Other World, so they may form one immensely powerful being that might stand a chance against Majin Buu.
After finding out that the Dragon Radar is still in West City and Majin Buu is about to cause more destruction, Goku decides to distract him while allowing Trunks to head into West City and retrieve the Dragon Radar before it is destroyed along with everything else in West City by Majin Buu, otherwise they will never be able to find the Dragon Balls. Goku teleports to Majin Buu's location, and shows him and everyone (via Babidi's telepathy) the incredible power of the new Super Saiyan 3 form, whose energy could be sensed all the way to Supreme Kai's planet. Goku then engages in a fight with Majin Buu, whom he overpowers blow for blow. Amazingly, Majin Buu is still having a good time and enjoying the fight, even forcing Goku to narrowly deflect an imitated version of his own Kamehameha wave, which chips over a tenth of the Earth. He later states, that he probably could have won, but that he wanted to leave it in the hands of Gohan, Trunks, and Goten because he will not be there forever, and that they need to have a shot at saving the universe instead of a dead fighter. Unfortunately, the action of sustaining Super Saiyan 3 to briefly fight with Buu shortens Goku's time on Earth and he is forced to return to the Other World.
Once Goku has returned to Other World, he learns that his son, Gohan, is not dead, but in fact training with Shin on the Kai Planet teleporting there only to just miss having his head removed by Gohan practicing with The Z Sword. Gohan has been training with the legendary Z Sword, and to test its strength, Shin summons a block of the densest metal in the universe, Kachin, as testing material. Goku throws the cube at Gohan, expecting the Z Sword to slice the block in half. Instead, the sword snaps in half and from it emerges Old Kai, who tells them that he will fully unlock Gohan's potential with a ritual.
Through a crystal globe, Goku watches the fight between Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks and Super Buu with much anticipation, amazed that the two boys who, alone, could only access the Super Saiyan state were able to achieve Super Saiyan 3 so quickly when fused. As Gotenks is about to finish Super Buu after a lengthy battle, he reverts to his base form and quickly defuses. Gohan (after having his hidden power released) then arrives, effortlessly thrashing Buu with his newfound powers, but Super Buu escapes by self-destructing until Goten and Trunks can fuse again an hour later, and he then absorbs Gotenks and Piccolo, gaining the upper hand.
|“||Wake up! Majin Buu's eaten everyone we care about! Everyone is gone, even Bulma! They've become part of Buu, they can't even die! I just thought the least we could do is put our old differences aside, just this once, and really work together. We owe that to our teammates, our families Vegeta, our friends! Look, you've always talked about our Saiyan race, how we're the last of a mighty people. Well it's time to accept we're starting a new race, one that can be just as strong, just as proud! But not if we're caught up in so much of our old birthrights to see what we have right in front of us! We've lost our old race Vegeta... let's not lose this one, too!||„|
— — Goku towards Vegeta
When Gohan fails due to Super Buu's stolen powers, Old Kai gives his life to Goku so that he may return to Earth to help Gohan. Goku is also given Potara Earrings so that he can fuse with Gohan in order to create an unmatched warrior that would easily destroy Buu without even the need to transform according to Old Kai. When Goku arrives on the battlefield, much to the surprise of Gohan and Super Buu, he cuts Super Buu in half with a Destructo Disc and tosses one of the earrings to Gohan. Gohan misses for the grab, and Goku tells Gohan to hurry and find the earring. He stalls Super Buu, fighting as a Super Saiyan 3. After the fight, Gotenks defuses inside Super Buu, and his power drops to almost 1/3 of his original power. Goku states that he is not much of a threat anymore and realizes that they can beat Super Buu easily. However, Gohan is absorbed when Super Buu catches him off-guard. At this moment of despair, the newly resurrected Vegeta appears and Goku asks him to fuse with him. Vegeta refuses and the two briefly battle Super Buu but fail miserably. Goku then tells Vegeta that their families and friends have been killed and begs for Vegeta to put their differences aside so they can save the Earth. Vegeta finally agrees and the two of the most powerful remaining Saiyans fuse to become Vegito.
egito then easily thrashes Super Buu, even with Gohan absorbed. Super Buu tries every technique and attack he has got against the fused Saiyans, but Vegito manages to dodge by all of them without much trouble. After a lengthy fight, the mighty Vegito wins easily. However, supposedly due to Vegeta's arrogance in not simply finishing Buu off, Vegito is eventually absorbed by Super Buu, with a Saiyan Shield protecting him. However, it is later revealed that he chose to be absorbed on purpose because he wanted to rescue his friends and family before killing Super Buu. Inside Buu, Vegito automatically separates into the two Saiyans supposedly due to the properties of Super Buu's digestive system (their timelimit ran out, at this point they believed the fusion was permanent). While in the stomach, Goku is attacked by enzymes that quickly cover his body, making him sticky and burning him in pain. While Goku struggle to get enzymes off, a roundworm shows up. Goku is almost eaten by the roundworm until he finally blasts the enzymes off his body. After traveling through Super Buu's body, Goku and Vegeta reach Super Buu's brain where they find Gohan, Trunks, Goten, and Piccolo, unconscious but still alive. After freeing them and having to fight Super Buu inside his own body, Vegeta decides to remove the unconscious fat Majin Buu from Super Buu. Despite pleas from Super Buu, Vegeta pulls the fat Majin Buu free and Super Buu undergoes another transformation. Goku and Vegeta then escape from Super Buu's body with the newly rescued Z Fighters. Super Buu then transforms back to his original form, Kid Buu.
|“||Majin Buu is so much stronger than anyone I've ever faced before... but I know there's still a way to win!||„|
— — Goku after saving Vegeta
Outside, Goku rescues Mr. Satan, his dog Bee, and Dende, but fails in saving Gohan, Goten, Trunks, and Piccolo before the newly transformed Kid Buu destroys the Earth in an extreme show of power (Vegeta previously stopped him from doing this with a much smaller blast that could still take out the planet, but he then charged a huge ball they could not deflect in response). Kibito Kai teleports in and saves Vegeta, Goku, Dende, and Mr. Satan by bringing them to the Sacred World of the Kais. After regenerating, Kid Buu sets out to find Goku and Vegeta by copying Kibito Kai's instantaneous movement technique (in the manga original, he teleports to Goku's location instantly).
When Kid Buu finds them, Vegeta and Goku have a Rock-Paper-Scissors match to see who fights first. Goku wins and fights Buu. In the Anime, he starts the fight as a Super Saiyan 2, but eventually transforms into Super Saiyan 3. When he is a Super Saiyan 3, he fights evenly with Kid Buu for a short time, taking the advantage often. However, Goku had failed to account for the strain that fighting in a living body would have on him, and soon becomes exhausted. He attempts to gather up his strength while Vegeta distracts Buu in his Super Saiyan 2 form (getting mercilessly beaten in the process), but his Super Saiyan 3 transformation drains him of his energy reserves and he soon loses the ability to maintain the form. At Vegeta's suggestion, Goku begins gathering energy for a Super Spirit Bomb that would employ all the available energies of the Earth and its occupants (he does this to have the Earth "save itself for once").
|“||Adios. I'll be waiting for you, Majin Buu!||„|
— — Goku's lines before throwing the Super Spirit Bomb
Using King Kai's telepathy, Vegeta speaks to the newly revived people of Earth and begs for everyone to donate power to Goku's Spirit Bomb, which they are hesitant to do. Everyone on New Namek and the Other World gives energy for the Super Spirit Bomb and possibly many other planets as well, along with Goku's close friends. Meanwhile, Fat Majin Buu, while trying to hold off Kid Buu, falls in battle leaving a battered Vegeta to protect Goku while he forms the Super Spirit Bomb. Eventually, Mr. Satan finally convinces everyone on the newly regenerated Earth to give Goku all the energy he needs to destroy Kid Buu once and for all. With the contribution of power from Earth, Goku launches the Super Spirit Bomb. But as impossible as it seems, Kid Buu actually stops the Spirit Bomb and slowly begins to push it back at Goku. Vegeta realizes Goku used the rest of his power to gather and form the bomb and has nothing left to defeat Buu.
Using the last wish from the Namekian Dragon (the first two were spent restoring Earth to its normal condition and then reviving all those who died since Babidi's arrival except the evil ones), Dende wishes for Goku's full power to be restored. With his power restored, Goku powers up the Super Spirit Bomb even more, transforms into a Super Saiyan and stops Kid Buu's forward progress and the Super Spirit Bomb comes back to Kid Buu. After several moments reflecting over the events that led to this moment, Goku makes one last wish to himself, that Kid Buu be reborn as a good being so they can fight again one day. With the blessing of Earth's residents, Goku destroys Kid Buu. After Dende heals Goku and Vegeta, they find Majin Buu is alive. Vegeta attempts to finish him off but Goku convinces Vegeta to spare him. They are then teleported back to Earth and rejoice with their families, with Goku announcing he has come back to life again..
Six months after the defeat of Kid Buu, Goku summons Shenron to erase Majin Buu from the Earthlings' minds. Later, Goku shows up late to Bulma's party due to him watching over dinosaur eggs.
Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!!
Two years after Kid Buu's extinction, Goku becomes a radish farmer. Goku questions why he is working when his family is supported by Mr. Satan, but Chi-Chi says that he must do hard work like a "normal" human. Goku and his family are invited by Mr. Satan to come to the opening of his hotel. At first, Goku is reluctant to go, but when he hears he may eat as much as he wants, he goes. When he gets to the hotel, he first has a little food competition with Vegeta, later when they are eating they feel the ki of two beings heading for earth, as a result Goku and the others go and check it out. They appear to be Gure and Tarble, the little brother of Vegeta, Tarble tells them two strong enemies and former servant's of Frieza are coming to Earth. Goku wants to fight them, but then the other fighters show that they want to fight too.
They then begin to argue until they agree to pick radishes; a game that declares the one with the longest radish as the winner, this is Trunks. When they go back to the hotel, Aboand Cado arrive. Goku tells Goten that he may help Trunks with his fight. Goten and Trunks defeat Abo and Cado, so Abo and Cado merge into Aka. Because of this, Goten and Trunks decide to fuse into Gotenks to even the match. After a short fight, Aka starts to overpower Gotenks with strong attacks. When Gotenks can not handle it anymore, Goku and Vegeta intervene after Aka launches a Super Wahaha no Ha. Goku plays a "dirty trick" on Vegeta, so he can fight alone and then goes Super Saiyan to do a Kamehameha on the energy attack Aka launched. The Kamehameha dissipates Aka's Super Wahaha no Ha. After that, Goku punches Aka in the gut, thus making Aka split up.
Afterward, they resume the banquet they were having before the arrival of Tarble and Gure. This time with the addition of Abo and Cado eating Goku's radish. As they eat, Goku and Vegeta begin to argue and turn Super Saiyan. It ends with everyone happily watching the argument except for Chi-Chi and Bulma.
Dragon Ball Super
Four years after the defeat of Kid Buu, Goku is still working as a radish farmer in order to gain money by Chi-Chi's demand. One day, Goku hears that King Kai is on Snake Way wishing back his planet. On Snake Way, Porunga is summoned with the help of Grand Elder Moori. King Kai wants his planet to be bigger with less gravity and a race track but before he could speak, Goku interrupts him and tells Porunga to make his planet the same it was previous because it is good for training. After the wish is made and King Kai's planet has returned, Goku says he has to get home to do farm work quickly before Chi-Chi yells at him so he says bids him farewell.
God of Destruction Beerus Saga
Some point later, while plowing the field, Goten appears with lunch for Goku and Goku tells Goten to work the tractor while he eats. After he was finished eating, Goku starts training in Super Saiyan. While training, he imagines fighting Frieza, Cell, and Majin Buu but this causes Goten to fall off the mountainside. Goku quickly notices and uses Instant Transmission to save the tractor and Goten. He explains to Goten that he needs to watch what he's doing so that he could train in case a stronger foe than Kid Buu appears.
Later that day, Goten tells Goku that he and Trunks had gotten Videl a wedding gift, when Mr. Satan arrives to offer Goku 100 million zeni, as a way to say thank you for helping him defeat Buu. Goku initially declines, not understanding how large a sum 100 million zeni actually is and tells him to give it to Vegeta but Mr. Satan says that the Briefs are richer than he is. Goten reminds Goku that if he gave Chi-Chi all of the money, he could easily quit his job and go train with King Kai. At Mr. Satan and Goten's recommendation, Goku accepts the offer, and after talking with Chi-Chi, transports to King Kai's planet to start his training.
When Goku arrives at King Kai's planet, he causes King Kai to crash into his house. After the crash, King Kai makes Goku food and starts rebuilding his house. While King Kai wasn't enjoying rebuilding his house, Goku was explaining to King Kai that he is there to train ten times the gravity of Earth. King Kai says to Goku that he is an important figure and the most important of all Kais, but Goku sees King Kai as a friend. Goku changes clothes to a blue and white tracksuit and starts his training.
While training, Goku hears his name in a conversation between King Kai, Old Kai, and Kibito Kai to keep Goku away from the God of Destruction Beerus. Goku scares King Kai and gets paint all on him. To distract Goku from the conversation, King Kai brings up what Goku did, teleporting Cell to his planet, blowing it into bits, as a result causing King Kai's death. After being successfully distracted by Kais' conversation, Goku continues his training pushing tons of weights. Goku remembers that he was missing Bulma's birthday party and gets scared of what she might do. Goku starts to notice that King Kai was acting strange and wonders why but King Kai keeps it to himself.
King Kai asks Goku to go to Bulma's party or he might lose friends, but Goku still refuses to go and trains some more. Goku fires a Kamehameha wave on King Kai's planet causing his house to fall apart again. With King Kai frustrated, he slips the name Beerus and sparks Goku's interest. King Kai starts to explain to Goku Beerus' role in the universe: he is a god keeps balance in the universe and is the most fearsome god. This interests Goku even more, which makes Goku want to meet Beerus. King Kai senses Beerus' ki getting closer and encourages Goku to not do anything reckless and also tells him to hide in his house. Beerus arrives on King Kai's planet which strikes fear into King Kai.
Goku, who stayed hidden with Gregory in King Kai's house, is still noticed when Beerus needed to speak with him. Beerus asked Goku if he ever heard of the name Super Saiyan God but Goku denies. Beerus is disappointed and asks him if he was the one who defeated Frieza and Goku claims that he did as used the power of a Super Saiyan. Goku's power in his base was examined by Beerus and says that he's couldn't have beaten him unless he transformed. Goku is curious about Beerus's power and asks to have a battle with him. Beerus accepts to see the power of Goku.
Goku immediately transforms into Super Saiyan as soon as he was ready. He charges Beerus but he shows no effort towards Goku. Goku quickly bores Beerus, making him want to leave. Goku turns Super Saiyan 2 which surprises Beerus that Goku managed to surpass his limits. They both continue to fight but Beerus constantly dodged Goku's punches and kicks. Goku wanted to pause the battle for a moment to ask Beerus if he could fight back instead of dodging. Beerus agrees and says that he will attack back if Goku managed to show more of his power. Even after agreeing, Beerus dodges his attacks. Goku continues to throw punches, putting holes through King Kai's planet.
Goku transforms into his final transformation, Super Saiyan 3. Goku charges with full force, managing to get punches on Beerus. A Kamehameha wave was shot towards Beerus but was blocked by his finger. Goku began to feel intimidated by Beerus and attacks him once again. He notices his hits aren't landing and that Beerus let him get hits on him. A final Kamehameha being blown, missed Beerus and went through King Kai's planet. Beerus had enough and decided to attack Goku, flicking him on the forehead and pressed a pressure point on Goku's shoulder, making him revert to his base form. Beerus and Whis left to Earth after this, with Goku is lying on the ground in agony. He remarks about the comments Beerus made about the Super Saiyan God. He still wants to fight Beerus and suggests fusion with Vegeta but still doesn't think that isn't enough. He gets up, knowing that the Earth is in danger and wants to go back to prevent Beerus' destruction.
Goku is given a Senzu Bean by King Kai, recovering from his battle with Beerus. Goku wants to go to Bulma's birthday party but King Kai, Gregory, and Bubbles won't let him. Goku decides to wait it out on King Kai's planet but doesn't know if he can do so. After the battles of the Z-Fighters and Beerus, Beerus decides that he should destroy planet Earth. Goku intervenes Beerus before he does so and asks for time to summon the Super Saiyan God. Beerus gave him the time he needed to use the Dragon Balls to summon Shenron. After Goten and Trunks laid out the Dragon Balls, Goku summoned Shenron and asks him if he knows of the Super Saiyan God.
He tells them how to create one, proceeding to speak the procedures required to make one before disappearing. Now knowing how to create it, Goku along with Vegeta, Goten, Trunks and Gohan attempt to channel their powers over to Goku, but they only succeed in increasing his power. Whis notes that they need six righteous Saiyan and Videl soon steps up, announcing her pregnancy. They then attempt the ritual once more, this time with Videl. With six righteous Saiyans' powers combined, the ritual was reattempted. After a lengthy procedure, he has finally become, a Super Saiyan God.
Goku and Beerus both ascend into the sky. Goku is yet to get a hold on his great power and attempts a few failed attacks on Beerus, but while he fought, he slowly came to grasp this new height of power. To measure his power, Goku charges a Kamehameha Wave and launches it soon after at Beerus, who effortlessly evades it as the blast explodes in the sea. Beerus then attacks the Saiyan, showing him the difference between them however, Goku, while slowly getting used to his new power, manages to grab Beerus's fist, demonstrating that he can catch up to the Destroyer now.
Beerus compliments his power and proceeds to launch an energy ball at Goku, which Goku struggles greatly in deflecting but manages to throw it off eventually. Goku charges up before attacking Beerus yet again, a few failed punches followed by a successful one that aggravates the deity. An angered Beerus attempts yet another punch, but is surprised by Goku who evades his fist, locking the god in his arm and then flicking him in the forehead, continuing to chop him in the neck, similar to how Beerus defeated him at King Kai's planet. However, unlike Beerus, Goku's hits were too weak to knock the god out while Goku states that they are even now, Beerus commenting that he didn't expect him to be the type of person who'd carry a chip on his shoulder. Beerus then announced that henceforth, a battle between the gods will continue.
Goku first charges at Beerus but without Beerus knowing, Goku uses the Afterimage Technique to hit Beerus in the abdomen. The two fight on par as the sky is beginning to become absent of clouds with the sheer power of Goku gaining rapid punches to Beerus and Beerus does the same. Beerus decides to launch a Sphere of Destruction at Goku in which he compresses the blast. The gods exchange several attacks towards each other: Goku bites Beerus's tail, Beerus smooshing Goku's face together, Goku screaming in Beerus's ear, and Beerus pulling Goku's nose with his finger nail. Goku notices that Beerus isn't using his full power against him. Before Goku could finish speaking, he is blasted several times by Beerus and is blown onto an island. While on the island, Goku is getting pounded on by the Destroyer until Goku headbutts and punches him. Goku is launched into the air and is repeated being hit until he reaches space.
Goku is immobile until Beerus tries to motivate Goku to use his full power. Beerus creates an atomic bomb and kicks it towards Earth. The is unblock-able so Goku decides to blast it with a one handed Kamehameha. Beerus creates multiple and fires them, so Goku powers up a Kamehameha to blast them all. Without reacting quickly enough, he is impaled through his abdomen from Beerus which makes him think he's found the wrong warrior to fight. Goku falls down to the Earth, into the ocean. Goku starts to think that he didn't know a person that strong could've existed. In the moment, his body starts to heal with the power of Super Saiyan God and starts to get excited. Goku launches from the ocean back to space. Goku states that the power of Super Saiyan God is rising his power and wants to continue the battle and see the power of Beerus.
Goku and Beerus continue to ascend in space. While rising, Goku notices Beerus wasn't following from below and was behind him. After an attempt to chop Goku's hand, Goku catches it and they both agree to not use any "cheap tricks". Goku and Beerus charge their ki and rush towards each other to clash their fists. This clash leads to rifts throughout the universe. The power of the two clashing could destroy the planets, the stars, the universe, the gods, and themselves. Goku and Beerus continue to clash even though they were both contacted by Kibito Kai to cease battle. Goku and Beerus continue to charge their ki and clash on last time, after three others. The clash however was canceled by Goku, as he used the same amount of power and attacked at the same angle as Beerus. After Goku has stated to have been testing his new techniques on Beerus, Beerus becomes frustrated even more. Goku leaves a scratch on Beerus leaving him to an Atomic Bomb attack on Goku and he returns a Kamehameha. The collision of the blasts cause rifts throughout the universe, destroying many planets and stars, and other effects. Goku continues to surpass his limits using the Super Saiyan God's powers. After the draw of power, an explosion of light flares out.
Goku is struggling in the ki clash with Beerus. Beerus eventually nullifies the energy that was being exerted out; Goku is told that he was able to do so if he used 100% of his power. Goku and Beerus continue exchanging blows toward each other. Goku's power has been increasing during his battle as stated by Beerus. Goku also started to use 100% of his power against him. When Beerus used an attack he used against Goku earlier in the battle, Goku grabs his head and gets three headbutts on him - eventually still getting blasted by Beerus' attack. Goku's Super Saiyan God form is starting to expire, due to having a time limit, but still possesses the power. Goku reverts into his Super Saiyan form, but still is able to gets hits on Beerus.
Goku and Beerus continue exchanging blows and energy blasts towards each other as they go toward Earth. Goku is struggling to keep up with Beerus even though he has the god power. As Beerus is holding his hand out, Goku charges him and punches his hand, leading them to space again. A light shined and it could be seen throughout the universe. Goku stars to fade out of his Super Saiyan form. Beerus flicks Goku, as an end to their battle. Goku, however, as he is falling towards Earth, he doesn't take this as a loss and thinks of his family and friends, fueling him to continuing showing off his power.
Goku uses his energy to create a fully-powered Kamehameha and Beerus throws an atom-like blast. The collision of these two creates a Sphere of Destruction. Goku is struggling to counter Beerus, leading him to punch the energy sphere and completely destroying the blast. Goku, as a result, falls toward Earth. Vegeta catches him before he could hit Bulma's ship. Goku who is in pain, tries to convince Beerus not to destroy the Earth. As Beerus is ready to destroy the Earth, he fires a ki blast at Bulma's ship but misses because he falls asleep. Whis takes off with Beerus but before he does, he thanks Goku for entertaining Beerus. In the manga, after his fight with Beerus, Beerus returns to Goku to tell him that he's the second strongest fighter he's ever fought.
After fighting him, Goku has a big meal. Goku hears the news of Gohan becoming a father and tells him to give the baby plenty of food. Goten asks him how it felt becoming a god, Goku responds that he didn't actually become a god and that he doesn't like it. Goku tells Vegeta that he'll become the next Super Saiyan God, but Vegeta tells him that he'll surpass him, Beerus, and Super Saiyan God. Goku then mocks Vegeta for the "My Bulmaaa" situation. Piccolo points out that Goku has been watching the because he teleported to reach there. Goku says that he couldn't think of anything while watching them fight.
Golden Frieza Saga
After the battle with the God of Destruction Beerus, Goku wants to train on King Kai's planet but he has to continue farming because Chi-Chi has used the 100 million zeni on Goten's education and he has a granddaughter on the way. Goku is trying to get his tractor fixed by Bulma but no one is at home. He passes by Satan City where he sees a match between Mr. Satan and Galbee. Mr. Satan volunteers Goku to take on Galbee because he is scared to fight. While only in their fighting stances, Goku has to go because he sees Chi-Chi and Piccolo. She doesn't want him fighting and wants him to be a good grandfather for Gohan's upcoming daughter. At night time, Goku returns home, where he sees Goten and Chi-Chi there. Goku is hungry but doesn't want to go in because he doesn't want to be in trouble.
Goku continues farming and is using his tractor but is unaware of his actions due to him being asleep. Krillin arrives so Goku is alert at the moment. Krillin wonders how strong Goku has gotten so he is asked to punch him. Goku does so and it sends Krillin flying through buildings and across land. Goku uses Instant Transmission to catch him but misses him, letting him hit a bolder. Goku takes him back to his place to rest and get treatment by 18. Goku wants become stronger so he doesn't fall behind. When nobody was around, he has his training session.
Six months later, after Pan is born. Chi-Chi doesn't want Pan to be a fighter like the rest of the family. When Videl and Chi-Chi are discussing her future, Goku is brought by Goten to persuade Chi-Chi to come out so Gohan and Mr. Satan could speak with her. After Bulma is able to come in and she mentions that Vegeta has been training on Beerus' planet with Whis, Goku smashes through Gohan's library but he still fixes it. Goku asks Bulma for Whis' next return and she says that he'll return in a month or two. Chi-Chi doesn't want Goku training but he perseveres to try to.
Goku waits impatiently, interrupting Bulma while she's doing activities. She eventually gives him a phone to get in contact with him when Whis shows up. After some time, Bulma calls and tells him that Whis has arrived on Earth. Goku goes to Capsule Corporation where Whis and Bulma are eating with each other. Whis agrees to take Goku to train with him but he has to wait because Whis went to Earth to eat. Goku starts annoying Whis to take him to train. As Whis finished, he is ready to leave but Chi-Chi is approaching in the arms of Gohan. Goku rushes to leave with Whis so he wouldn't get in trouble.
Goku and Whis are approaching Beerus' planet. When they get there, Goku is happy to see Vegeta and notices that he's gotten stronger since being trained by Whis for six months. Goku has to do chores with Vegeta and help him change Beerus' sheets. When they get into Beerus' room, Goku is amazed and demanded to remain quiet so Beerus won't wake up. Goku and Vegeta have to wait for the perfect moment to change his sheets but Goku is getting impatient. Goku gets attacked by Beerus several times but at one point, Beerus had Goku in a leg lock. Goku easily lifted Beerus so Vegeta could change his sheets.
Goku and Vegeta continue doing housework all over Beerus' planet. Once they finalized their chores, they began training with Whis. Before they commenced, Whis gives Goku a new gi because Vegeta received a new one from Bulma. Goku and Vegeta used weights to train. They both had to carry their weight and travel along a path before they get lost in another dimension if they fall off. Later that day, Goku and Vegeta go to their room to prepare to go to sleep. Goku says that he doesn't want to do the housework but he still wants to keep training. Goku falls asleep moments after. The next day, Goku and Vegeta are sparring against Whis to hit him. Their match is stopped because they lacked the speed to keep up. Whis starts to tell Goku and Vegeta their weaknesses and says that Goku is too calm in his fights and could lead him to fail in the end.
When Frieza has been revived, Goku senses a huge power from Earth can't doesn't know what it is. Goku is told by Vegeta to ignore and continue doing housework. Later, Goku and Vegeta spar with each other under the supervision of Whis and they accidentally tapped into a new power-up but only for a short while. They eventually see Beerus who has recently woken in his sleep and told him that they came to train with Whis and only want to get stronger.
Goku and Vegeta are training when their sparring match has been ceased by Whis because they were just throwing blows at each other. Beerus points out that Goku and Vegeta have gotten stronger and wants to fight them. Goku says that he and Vegeta are still below Beerus in power and are no match for him. Beerus suggests to send Goku and Vegeta to "that place" so they can train to get stronger quicker. While in that place, Goku and Vegeta cannot move until Vegeta figures out that they shouldn't have their ki leaking out. They also recognize that he place they're in is similar to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber but filled with god ki and no signs of an exit. Without knowing where to go, Goku and Vegeta go towards Whis' staff.
In that place, Goku and Vegeta continue sparring. Whis finally brings back Goku and Vegeta because Beerus is getting frustrated and wants more pizza, which is in Whis' staff. Upon returning his staff, all of the pizza has been eaten because Goku and Vegeta needed to eat or they would've starved and died. Beerus is furious with them so he chases them into the woods. Whis sees on his staff that he's received a message and recognizes Bulma. She tells him that Frieza has come back and she needs Goku and Vegeta. The time it'll take for Whis to get Vegeta and Goku to Earth will be 35 minutes so Goku finds an alternative method. Goku is trying to use Instant Transmission to get to Earth but he can't sense anybody's ki. When Gohan fully powers up into a Super Saiyan, Goku is able to sense it. Goku holds out his hand for Vegeta to grab hold but Vegeta grabs a hold of his shoulder. Upon arrival, Goku flicks away a beam that was shot at Gohan from Frieza.
Goku speaks with Gohan to congratulate him for summoning them so Goku could use Instant Transmission. Goku also tells him that he'll wish Piccolo back with the Namekian Dragon Balls. He then instantly teleports Piccolo to the Lookoutfor Goten and Trunks to explain to Dende what transpired. Goku wonders how Frieza was resurrected and was told by Vegeta that the Dragon Balls have been used. Frieza begins to explain his torturous times in Hell, which has no meaning to Goku. Frieza then leaves his hover pod to further power up to combat Goku. Frieza transforms into his final form and in the process, he kills the rest of his army. Goku wishes that he goes first against Frieza because Vegeta has taken out Ginyu. Frieza is waiting for Goku to transform into a Super Saiyan but Goku says that that power is not needed yet.
Goku and Frieza are in their fighting stances. Frieza casually lands and suddenly power down. Both Goku and Frieza simultaneously walk towards each other so they both could deliver blows and begin a power struggle. The power struggle eventually explodes. Goku doesn't want hear Frieza complains so they could continue fighting. Then, Frieza commences to pull dirty tricks on Krillin and Bulma. Goku saves Krillin the first time but when trying to save Bulma, Frieza lands a blow that sends Goku falling toward the ground but Vegeta saves her. After colliding again, Goku warns Frieza about attacking the others and he's only fighting him. After a short conversation about Goku reviving Piccolo with the Dragon Balls, Frieza and Goku continue their match. Sometime after this, Goku is fighting Frieza but gets kicked in the back by Vegeta.
Goku and Vegeta begin fighting each other. Frieza breaks up their fight to ask Vegeta question his loyalty. Frieza wants to get his revenge on Goku so he wants Vegeta to wait a little longer. Goku and Frieza decide to reveal their true power to each other. Goku goes first and begins to concentrate his power. Goku unleashes his new power, Super Saiyan Blue. Goku is impressed of the new transformation and says that Frieza, who is not impressed, should not act tough about it. Frieza questions if he just went Super Saiyan but Goku says that he's a Super Saiyan with the power of Super Saiyan God. Goku welcomes Frieza his turn to show his power.
Frieza compliments Goku on his hard work on becoming a Super Saiyan Blue and talks a little bit more with Frieza until he keeps urging Frieza to show him his new power and he eventually does it after Goku catches a punch from behind. Goku becomes shocked and impressed by Frieza's new form and he calls it Golden Frieza. They decided to restart the fight with their new forms by starting at close combat then firing ki blasts at each other until it leads to an energy clash between the two's energy beams and keep pouring on the power until the resulting collision causes an explosion that blinds the spectators but despite the amount of power used, both combatants are still going at each other. After a seemingly even conflict, Frieza gains the upper hand and knocks Goku down to the ground with his Double Axe Handle, leaving the Saiyan surprised saying he took years of training to reach his current level but Frieza caught on like it's nothing. Frieza applauds his efforts but promises to tear him to shreds but the sight of Lord Beerus stops him for the moment. They resume their duel once more and once again Frieza gains the upper hand, leaving Goku exhausted and critically injured.
Despite the fact that Goku is losing, he refuses to give up which leads to Frieza strangling him and punching him in the face and gut until Goku bites his tail but once again the fight leads to him being blasted by Frieza and lands flat on his back on the ground but Goku kept going on. Vegeta suggested that he and Goku switch places and that he would kill Frieza himself but Goku insisted to the Saiyan prince that he "almost got him". Goku then tries to warn Frieza to leave before the tables turn and that leaves him to explain that Golden Frieza has a weakness but Goku refuses to tell him so they decided to use every once of power they have left and resume the fight again. After blocking a Full Power Energy Blast Volley, they fight at close combat once again, even with Frieza not allowing Goku to drown, and it would seem that Frieza has finally won until Goku fully resisted Frieza's finishing punch saying that he finally reached his time limit on his power-up and he punches Frieza through a rock and he ends up on the ground.
Goku then explains Frieza's weakness: he came to Earth as soon as he unlocked his Golden Frieza form, therefore he is burning more stamina and power than his body can regulate it and should have waited until he got used to it before he can exact his revenge. Frieza tries to punch Goku again but the Saiyan catches it once more and explosion shows up behind him. When Goku reverts into his base form, however, Sorbet shoots him in the chest with his Bad Ring Laser when he kindly asks Frieza to leave so he can have a rematch with him. Frieza then repeating kicks him and tells him his weakness: his excessive strength makes him careless, and Frieza prepares to kill Goku once and for all until Vegeta blocks the attack away after teleporting to their location.
After Vegeta told Goku so, he kicks him towards the location of Krillin, Gohan, and the others so that he can use the last Senzu Bean on him and with that a success, Goku thanks Vegeta for saving him and allows him to finish their fight with Frieza. Goku later explains to his friends that Vegeta too achieved his new Super Saiyan Blue form on his form thanks to his own power. When Frieza blows up the Earth, Goku and his friends (except Vegeta) are shielded by Whis and they can only stand by and watch as their beloved home world goes down in flames. Blaming himself for this happening Goku regrets not killing Frieza right away until Whis offered to use his Temporal Do-Over technique to turn back time to before the incident happened and he accepted his offer. As soon as the technique is finished, Goku turns into a Super Saiyan Blue once more and charges up a Dash Kamehameha so powerful that it destroys Frieza and sends him back to Earth's Hell. Vegeta shows up behind him afterwards and gives him a harsh scolding but Goku explained he had no choice so Bulma and the others explained everything towards him.
Goku then heads back to the Lookout to pick up Goten and Trunks and gather the Namekian Dragon Balls to revive Piccolo. He then explains to Piccolo what happened after he died and laughed after hearing Trunks saying he'll cut Frieza in half (a reference to what Future Trunks did to Frieza before the present Trunks was born). Goku then enjoys the feast Bulma threw and the food served in it. He later talks to Vegeta about planning to work together next time but Vegeta disagrees to that, and surprisingly, Goku agrees.
Universe 6 Saga
Sometime after the battle against Golden Frieza, Goku is sparring (doing finger ups in the anime) with Vegeta on Beerus' planet which is being supervised by Whis. Goku and Vegeta fight on even terms until Vegeta got angry and went Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan. Goku gets blasted by a ki blast from Vegeta. Goku reminds Vegeta that Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan was off limits but turns Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan anyway. While stating their power to each other, Goku bites his tongue saying Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan repeatedly. Goku asks for a new name and a suggestion given from Whis is "Super Saiyan Blue". Whis punishes Goku and Vegeta for transforming by making them put on heavy space suits.
While Goku and Vegeta bicker at each other, Champa and Vados suddenly arrive on Beerus' planet. Goku notices that they both look like Beerus and Whis and was told by Vados that she is Whis' sister and Beerus and Champa are twins. Beerus is woken up by Whis with the request of Champa. When they both get back, Goku is told that the Universe 6 has their own Earth and the Earthlings were wiped out by war. Champa challenges Beerus to a five on five Universe 6 and Universe 7 tournament for the Universe 7's Earth, which makes Goku excited.
After Whis explains why Beerus and Champa don't fight each other anymore, they discuss the details for the tournament. The rules will be the same as the Tenkaichi Budokai and will be in five Earth days on the Nameless Planet at 10 a.m. If Champa won, he will use the Super Dragon Balls to switch the universes' Earths. If Beerus won, he will give him the six Dragon Balls he collected but Beerus has to find the last one on his own. Goku and Vegeta join Beerus' team off the bat. They also select Piccolo, Buu, and Beerus wants the strongest fighter he's ever faced, who's not Whis. Gohan is suggested by Vegeta to fight because he has the highest potential but Goku doesn't want him to because he's focused on studying. Goku and Vegeta go back to Earth to get Bulma to invent a new Dragon Radar to locate the last Super Dragon Ball.
After some time, Bulma creates a new Dragon Radar called, the Super Dragon Radar. Goku tests it out but it doesn't work where they are, at the edge of the universe. Bulma gets in contact with her sister, Tights, to get Jaco to go to Earth. Goku asks Vegeta if he wants to train in the Time Chamber but Vegeta says that they're close to their limits. Goku says he will train alone and become stronger quicker, which leads to Vegeta wanting to train with him also and they could go all-out because they're two of them. Goku asks Piccolo to train with him but he declines. In 50 minutes, Jaco shows up and tells Bulma that as a Galactic Patrolman, he's busy but he'll take her to see Zuno to know where the center of the universe is to use the Super Dragon Radar. Goku tells Vegeta that they both have feisty wives. Vegeta doesn't mind so much because he says that Saiyan women are strong-willed. Goku then comments that he likes that Chi Chi is strong willed.
Goku and Vegeta are training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Goku wonders if the warriors from Universe 6 will be strong. Vegeta says that Champa is confident in his warriors even though he saw them train before. Goku is excited to see them and even the fighter Beerus has been speaking of. Vegeta wants Goku to act his age. Not knowing what he meant, Goku responds saying that Saiyans stay young they reach the age of 80. Vegeta was however, taking about his mentality. Vegeta wants to stop talking then turns into Super Saiyan Blue. Goku follows so they both could go all out in the room because it doesn't break. They train for three years in the room (three days in the outside world).
The day of the tournament, Goku and Vegeta finish their training in the Time Chamber and have beards after training for three years. The gang is on their way to Beerus' planet to pick up Beerus and his pick for the team. They are being taken their by Whis in his Cube. Goku wonders and asks Videl where Gohan is, she says that he's in an important conference (in the anime, Gohan tells Goku he couldn't participate in the tournament because he has a conference that day). As Vegeta wonders who the mystery attendant in the cube is, Whis says that he's the strongest being Beerus has ever faced, Monaka. Goku greets Monaka and questions his name, which means nipples. Later, everyone is playing Shiritori. When Whis says the phrase, "Juri-Juri", Goku questions a "Juri-Juri" so Whis responds saying that it's a bird from his planet.
On the Nameless Planet, Goku is amazed along with the rest of the group seeing the size of the Super Dragon Balls. Upon landing, he notices Shin and Kibito and wonders why they're separate. While Shin is explaining the situation, Goku notices two beings, the Universe 6 Supreme Kai and his attendant. Goku quickly rushes to meet them but is told that the written exam is beginning. When walking towards the stage, Goku recognizes a familiar face to which Vegeta exclaims is Frieza. It turns out not to be Frieza because Piccolo doesn't sense an evil presence from him.
Goku also notices another fighter from Universe 6, Magetta, and wonders if he's a "Human".
The written exam is about to begin on the command of Vados. As Goku is about to take his seat to take the exam, he sees Cabba. Goku and Vegeta are recognized by Cabba to be a Saiyan and he also reveals that he's a Saiyan, which surprises them. Vegeta comments on Cabba's attire an says that the attire he's wearing resembles the style the Saiyans wore before getting taken over by Frieza, which Cabba doesn't seem to know Frieza. Vegeta asks Cabba what planet the Saiyans are based on in their universe and Cabba responds saying Planet Salad, the origin planet of the Saiyans. Cabba is curious if Planet Salad exists in Universe 7 but Vegeta says that it has been destroyed because of an internal conflict between Saiyans and he further explains what happens after that. Goku then asks Cabba where his tail is, to which Cabba explains their race had tails long ago, but lost them due to evolving. Vegeta wonders if they're still a "warrior race", to which Cabba confirms they are, but they no longer steal planets, with their main objective being getting rid of evil doers. As Vados yells at them for not taking a seat, Vegeta demands that Cabba takes him to Planet Salad when he is able to and tells him not to worry because they do not steal planets any longer. Cabba agrees.
The exam is said to have ten simple questions to see what little knowledge the warriors have. After ten minutes, the results are in and Goku barely passes with a fifty-percent. However, their team is short of one character because Buu failed his, even spelling his name wrong (in the anime he falls asleep during it).
Goku blames Vegeta for requesting such a thing. Goku is the first to fight because he wants to see how strong the Universe 6 team is, he even says it may end with him only. He is first matched against Universe 6's, Botamo. After the universe anthem is sang, the match begins, but as soon as the match begins, Goku is immediately rushed by Botamo. Goku is struggling to dodge his attacks and eventually gets hit. Beerus is wondering what Goku is doing but Goku says he's just trying to exercise his meal off.
Goku begins running in the ring while Botamo is trying to attack him. He even fires beams at Goku but they fail to connect. Botamo eventually is worn out so Goku takes advantage of this as he is done exercising his meal. Goku attacks Botamo but no one can see him move because he's moving at an immense speed. Goku is taking control in this match but Botamo isn't done because he has a surprise for Goku. Goku is attacking Botamo but he isn't taking any damage, returning quickly to the fight. Goku even fires a Kamehameha at Botamo but he takes it. Goku thinks of an idea to beat Botamo. He then pushes Botamo down and drags him to the edge of the ring. As Botamo tries to punch Goku after trying several times attacking him, Goku grabs his arm and throws him out of the ring, resulting in a ring out.
After taking out Botamo, Goku suddenly looks over at another one of Universe 6's fighters, Hit, who is not paying attention to the fight and has his arms crossed. Goku's next challenger is Frost. Before they begin their match, they both wish each other luck and shake each other's hands. As the Tournament Presenter commences the match, Goku is charged by Frost and they both attack and block each other's attacks in a rapid succession. Goku and Frost are on par with each other. Goku uppercuts Frost in the gut and kicks him, sending him to the arena floor. Goku assumes that Frost is trying to test his power but Frost says he isn't doing so. Goku is eager to see Frost transform into his final form but Frost wonders how he knew he could. Goku tells Frost that he fought someone similar to him and tells him that he should transform so he wouldn't be defeated without using his true power. Frosts takes the advice and transforms into his final form.
Goku is surprised at Frost's transformation and says he hasn't seen that form previously. Frost wonders if he in Universe 7 has beaten him but Goku doesn't want to say so Frost assumes he didn't. Goku and Frost then charge at each other and battle it out again. They both attack each other again until Frost fires a finger blast at Goku and it has Goku crashing to the ground. Goku immediately hops up, not taking serious damage. Goku still thinks Frost is hiding another transformation so he transforms into Super Saiyan. Goku has Frost terrified so he charges towards Frost. As he does so, Frost transforms into his true final form. Goku is glad to see the form he remembers. As a Super Saiyan Goku completely outclassed Frost's final form, with Frost unable to land a major blow. However Frost does manage to land a weak blow to Goku which instantly renders Goku dizzy and unable to fight, leading to Frost kicking Super Saiyan Goku clean out of the ring and to the arena floor and out of the tournament and Goku being defeated by Frost.
As Goku is unconscious, Chi-Chi hurries to check on him. Goku is admits his loss to Frost and then Frost suddenly congratulates Goku and raises his hand. Goku then goes to sit with his team. He explains to Beerus that he thought Super Saiyan was enough for Frost and didn't think he needed to push him any further. The third match is between Piccolo and Frost. Before Piccolo starts his match with Frost, Goku bluntly tells Piccolo that he's no match for Frost but he can damage him a little for Vegeta. Piccolo loses to Frost due to a ring-out but Jaco objects this and claims that Frost cheated. Frost is caught using a needle to ensure his victory. In the anime, Frost uses it to make sure he wins so he gets the prize and receives support from Champa. In the manga, Frost uses it because he felt threatened. After watching the fights between Frost and Piccolo and Vegeta and Frost, Beerus locates a wound on Goku's hand from Frost's poison needle, allowing Goku to be re-registered back into the tournament on the grounds of Frost cheating and violating tournament rules to defeat Goku. However, Beerus absolutely insists that Monaka will remain the trump card of the team no matter what, which leads to Goku taking Vegeta's place when he loses. Goku wants to speak with Monaka but Beerus continuously protects Monaka from speaking to Goku but Monaka is unconscious after seeing Goku's Kamehameha in the first match. Beerus gets Goku away from Monaka by telling him that if Monaka is disturbed during his meditation, he will incinerate him, regardless of position.
Goku goes back to watching the tournament where he sees Vegeta beat Magetta and goes on to fight Cabba. During the fight both Piccolo and Goku make note of Vegeta appearing to be training Cabba. After the fight Goku watches Vegeta get dominated by Hit. After figuring out Hit's abilities he enters the ring to fight Hit himself. After throwing himself at Hit a few times Goku manages to block one of Hit's moves, to which Hit though was a fluke and attacked again with his Time Skip and this time Goku draws blood from Hit and begins to go on the attack, countering Hit's time skipping ability by predicting where he is going to be, much to the annoyance of Vegeta. Hit, realizing his Time-Skip is useless is forced to fight seriously and Goku goes Super Saiyan Blue and attacks Hit, forcing him to power up.
Goku, seeing that Hit is more powerful than he thought, now unveils his new technique, the Kaio-Ken form while in Super Saiyan Blue. Goku notes the chances of him doing it is roughly 10% and failure will likely kill him and explains what Kaio-Ken is. Goku explains that combining the Kaio-ken technique with his Super Saiyan Blue form is possible due to the form's required calm mind and perfect innate ki control, and he did not attempt to combine it with the previous Super Saiyan forms because they were too rough on his body and he would have died. Goku then powers it up ten times and goes on the assault, totally outclassing Hit but notes his body is starting to give out so Goku fires a Kamehameha at Hit. Hit however survives and the fight continues.
Determined to prove to Champa that he and Hit are more than just "pawns", Goku prepares to attack Hit again, but Hit once again increased his Time-Skip and landed a strong barrage of punches on Goku. Goku then retaliates with a strong blow to the head, knocking Hit into Champa's giant picture. Goku then asks Beerus to get rid of all the tournament rules, realizing that Hit is holding himself back because of the non-killing rule, and he had a few opportunities to finish Goku off. Champa agrees, while Beerus disagrees, and they begin to argue. Wanting to fight Hit another time, Goku deliberately falls out of the ring, losing by ringout, and Hit is declared the winner. When Goku disperses the Kaio-ken technique, he falls into an immense amount of pain, and collapses. As Piccolo carries Goku back to the sidelines, the final match between Monaka and Hit is announced. Beerus angrily confronts Goku, and Goku admits that Goku would have lost anyway due to the Kaio-ken's time limit, and much to the God of Destruction's annoyance, reminds him that Monaka has not fought yet. Goku, not knowing that Monaka is an amateur, cheers him on, and Monaka gracefully jumps to the ring, but crashes. As the match begins, Monaka lands a soft blow on Hit, but Hit pretends to be hurt and launches himself out of the ring, with Monaka being declared as the winner, and Universe 7 is announced as the winner of the tournament. Goku is impressed with Monaka's strength, then flies over to celebrate with his friends and family.
Goku then notices an angry Champa preparing to kill the fighters on his team for losing. As he prepares to act, Beerus tells him to mind his own business as his spotlight has ended. He is interrupted by the arrival of the Omni-King. As the Omni-King mentions that he would be interested in organizing another competition like this, Goku casually tells him it would be fun, as Champa and Beerus are flustered. Goku walks closer to the Omni-King, but his attendants halt him. Goku politely asks them if he can have a little chat, and Beerus says that the Omni-King is not one to "chat" with. The Omni-King then says it is alright, and praises Goku for his match with Hit. Omni-King says there will be a tournament soon, and Goku says he is looking forward to it, and extends his hand out to the Omni-King, which causes both Gods of Destruction to worry. There is a long pause, then the Omni-King shakes his hand, and calls Goku funny. Omni-King then leaves, with Beerus and Champa sighing in relief, telling Goku that he can destroy all of the universes if he wished. Goku then approaches Hit, wanting to have a rematch against him at a later time.
Goku and the Z-Fighters, along with Beerus and Whis, are riding on a Cube in space, and Whis removes the outer crust of the planet the tournament took place, revealing the seventh and final Super Dragon Ball. Bulma tells Beerus and Whis the phrase for summoning Shenron, which much be translated into the language of Gods (which is just speaking backwards). The Super Dragon Balls levitate close to each other, and Super Shenron is summoned, causing a huge shockwave and a bright light. Super Shenron then swallows the group, revealing a number of planets, galaxies, and stars inside. For his wish, Beerus asks Super Shenron to restore the Earth and human race for Universe 6, which has been granted, and Super Shenron leaves as the Super Dragon Balls are scattered across the universe. Beerus explained he wished for this so Champa would owe him one.
After the group arrive on Beerus' planet, Goku asks Beerus for a short sparring match with Monaka, but Beerus refuses, saying that as they are both tired from the tournament, they should go home and rest. Whis then drops off the Z-Fighters back on Earth.
The Z-Fighters are throwing a party for Universe 7's victory in the tournament, with Beerus, Whis, and Monaka also invited. While Bulma is waiting for the party to start, she asks Chi-Chi where Goku is, as Goku is seen taking a nap on his tractor in a farm. When Beerus and Whis arrive for the party, instructing everyone to keep the fact that Monaka is weak as a secret from Goku, Goku teleports to the party, startling Beerus. In order to buy time for Beerus to explain, Chi-Chi forces Goku to fly home to change into cleaner clothes. He does so, and teleports right back, wearing his regular Gi, and desperate for a sparring match against Monaka. In order to buy more time, Beerus forces Goku to do three hundred trillion sit ups, which he does quickly, not knowing how to count that high.
As Goku drags a frightened Monaka to a secure area to fight, Chiaotzu and Krillin attempt to slow Goku down, by binding him with Telekinesis and blinding him with Solar Flare respectively, as Beerus dons a life-sized costume of Monaka made by Mr. Satan. Goku, unsurprisingly fooled by the costume, engages in battle with Beerus. As Goku and Beerus fight, the costume Beerus is wearing begins to rip, exposing his body parts. Vegeta and Piccolo intervene, claiming that "Monaka" has the ability to control people, but after adjusting his costume, Beerus throws Vegeta and Piccolo out of the battle and starts fighting with Goku again, with Whis explaining that Beerus is enjoying the fight due to being absent in combat for a while. The fight was getting serious, as the two began to power up and create giant shockwaves, so Whis steps in-between the two and ends the fight, not wanting them to destroy Earth. Goku is impressed by Monaka's power, as Yamcha nonchalantly comments that (the real) Monaka has passed out due to the fight, much to everyone's annoyance. After seeing the real Monaka, Goku praises "Monaka" for having the ability to split himself. Goku, and an exhausted Beerus, then says they are ready to eat, and the party starts.
One night, Goku is eating dinner at home with Chi-Chi and Goten, and while Chi-Chi prepares to bring more food to Goku, Goku is seen slumping at the dinner table, claiming he does not really have an appetite. Goten and Chi-Chi wonder if Goku is sick, or dying, and Goku shoots down both claims. While Goku is grocery shopping for Chi-Chi, he tries to return to the market as he forgot to buy something, but his Ki has a mind of its own, not allowing Goku to turn back or even land properly. Later, Chi-Chi suggests Goku to ask King Kai what is wrong with him, and Goku does, teleporting away using Instant Transmission. However, Goku's Ki is interfering with his teleporting, and he lands in Bulma's bedroom as she walks in wearing nothing but a towel. Startled, Bulma and then Vegeta discover Goku casually sitting in their bedroom, and as they start to feel embarrassed and frustrated, Goku teleports again. Goku fails a few more times, teleporting to Krillin's police station, Penguin Village while seeing Arale, and on the top of Korin Tower. Goku realizes something really is wrong with him, and he finally teleports to King Kai's planet, as King Kai inspects him.
King Kai then tells Goku that he is suffering from Delayed Onset Ki Disorder, which is a disorder that temporarily disrupts a person's Ki after they use it in a reckless manner. In Goku's case, he used his Ki recklessly when he used the Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken technique in the tournament a few days prior. King Kai instructs Goku to forget training for a while due to the disorder, telling him to spend some time with his granddaughter. As Goku is flying home, his Ki forces him to crash land, destroying his entire house and angering Chi-Chi. The next day, Goku, Chi-Chi and Goten are in Gohan and Videl's house as Piccolo is babysitting Pan, and Goku calls Gohan, who is in the middle of lunch with a professor, and lets him know of the situation. Piccolo then leaves as Goku and Chi-Chi gain the responsibility of babysitting Pan, but not before he gives them oddly specific instructions on what Pan enjoys to eat and do for fun.
At night, Goku and Piccolo are sitting with Pan on top of the roof. Piccolo asks how Goku is feeling, and Goku replies that his Ki is so out of shape that he would lose to Piccolo in an all-out fight. Goku then has fun with Pan, playing airplane with her and apologizing for his disorder, wanting to fly Pan around in the starry sky. The next morning, Pan disappears, and ends up in the hands of Pilaf, Mai, and Shu, who overheard Gohan and Goku's past conversation. Goku, along with Goten, Piccolo and Chi-Chi, are desperately looking for her. Later that day, Gohan and Videl arrive back home, and the others are exhausted, but Pan was sleeping soundly on the couch by the time they arrived. They deduced that overnight Pan must have crawled under the bed or in the closet. As Gohan tells Pan that Goku is not feeling well, Pan starts referring to Goku as "Gramps", and Goku starts to feel proud.
Later, Goku is training on King Kai's planet, while he is constantly frightening King Kai with his immense strength. Due to Goku's Ki disorder passing, King Kai suggests that Goku goes to train on Beerus' planet, but Goku says that Whis is away doing something and Beerus' planet cannot be easily found via Instant Transmission. As Goku is eating, King Kai suddenly senses Gotenks' energy, and Goku does also, as well as Vegeta's energy, and realizes that the two are fighting. Goku then teleports to Planet Potaufeu just in time, before cloned Vegeta finishes off a defeated Goten and Trunks. Goku asks cloned Vegeta what he thinks he's doing, not aware of the current situation and believing cloned Vegeta to be the real Vegeta. Vegeta, transparent and close to disappearing due to Commeson's effects, tells Goku that the details are irrelevant, and tells Goku to defeat cloned Vegeta in 3 minutes, while spitefully wondering if Goku can do it. Goku, still somewhat confused about the situation, agrees, and is excited to engage in battle with cloned Vegeta, who has the same amount of power as the original Vegeta. They then start their battle, causing a shockwave.
Goku and cloned Vegeta fight an evenly matched battle. As an impatient Vegeta flies towards them and gives them both tips, Goku and even cloned Vegeta wonder who's side Vegeta is on. Goku then realizes he is running out of time, and transforms into a Super Saiyan Blue. Much to everyone's surprise, cloned Vegeta does the same, and they continue their battle, causing destruction to the area. As they both land a powerful blow, a bright light is created, and the core of Commeson attacks Trunks in the midst of it, as Vegeta steps in-between them. Monaka casually steps on the core, which crushes it, causing cloned Vegeta immense pain. Goku uses this opportunity to fire a God Kamehameha, destroying cloned Vegeta and saving Vegeta just in time.
As Potage is re-sealing the core of Commeson, Goku praises Monaka for defeating the core, exclaiming how powerful he is. The group then say goodbye to Potage as they return to Earth. Goku and Vegeta discuss Vegeta sucking on the key to the seal, which resembled a baby pacifier, and Vegeta is embarrassed as he realizes this. Goku and Vegeta then exclaim to each other that they will not lose.
Future Trunks Saga
Goku is discussing the ramen he ate with Vegeta, Beerus and Whis on Beerus' planet. Whis receives a distress call from Bulma on Earth, who shows Goku and Vegeta a severely injured and unconscious Future Trunks, having barely escaped his alternate timeline with his life. The four teleport to Earth, and Goku teleports to Korin Tower to get some Senzu Beans. When he returns, Bulma feeds Future Trunks a Senzu Bean, and he wakes up. Hearing Goku's voice and seeing him, Future Trunks angrily attacks him, surprising everyone. Future Trunks regains his senses after Bulma slaps him, and is surprised to see Goku alive again.
Future Trunks then explains what happened in the future, and Goku and Vegeta are shocked to hear about Goku Black, who looks the same as Goku and even refers to himself as Goku. Goku later wants Future Trunks to spar with him, asking where he stands against Goku Black, and they both transform into a Super Saiyan 2. Impressed by Future Trunks' strength, Goku then transforms into a Super Saiyan 3, which greatly shocks Future Trunks. Future Trunks then tries to attack with his sword, but Goku catches it with his fingers, and knocks Future Trunks down, defeating him. Krillin and Piccolo soon arrive to greet Future Trunks. Anime timeline: A portal in the sky appears, and Goku Black comes out of it, who realizes who Goku is. Trunks initially gets angry and rushes to fight him but is stopped by Vegeta and Goku goes in the young Saiyan's place thanking Vegeta. Goku greets Black and wants to fight him to which Black attacks him with a giant Golden-Black Ki Sphere that drives Goku far out of the city. Regrouping Goku goes Super Saiyan 2 and goes on the offensive. Black is able to get in a few good shots but Goku totally overwhelms Black, dealing heavy damage with every strike and driving Black back into the city, shocking Vegeta, Future Trunks, Piccolo and Krillin that Goku was easily able to overwhelm Black with only a fraction of his power. Throughout the fight, Black is attempted to be called back into his world by his Time Ring, but was able to resist it until the end of the fight where he was too injured to keep fighting and was pulled back through before Goku could finish him off, but not before destroying Future Trunks' Time Machine. Goku and company are stuck in the present, wondering what has happened, while Black arrives back in Future Trunks' timeline, and collapses from his injuries from the fight.
After Bulma brought a capsule with another Time Machine (the one Cell came in) to everyone's shock she then explains how Future Trunks left the capsule to her before going back to the future after the Cell Games. Bulma could never figure it out but now she has the notebook to fix it. Goku decided train while Bulma and the others were fixing the Time Machine, but Whis and King Kai didn't want to train him on their planets so Goku decides to eat instead and suggests that Future Trunks should take it easy. Goku then goes with Beerus and Whis to Universe 10 because they have an idea on Black's true identity. On there way to Universe 10 Whis tells Goku about Zamasu making Goku excited to fight him.
Arriving in Universe 10 they meet Zamasu and his Master Gowasu. Goku then asks Zamasu to a fight but is stopped by Beerus. Beerus then tells them about Goku Black and how he has a Time Ring. Gowasu then shows them their Time Rings and how they are all here. Zamasu then fights Goku with Goku turning Super Saiyan 2, saying he hasn't fought another God since Beerus much too Gowasu's surprise wondering how Goku is still alive. Goku then tries to punch Zamasu but then Zamasu redirects his punch then tries to chop Goku's neck but Goku blasts his hand away with his Ki blast. Goku then feels the Ki coming off of Zamasu as he powers up saying it's very similar to Black's ki. Goku then overpowers Zamasu defeating him in battle. Goku then leaves with Beerus and Whis hoping to fight Zamasu again some day. After returning to Earth in Universe 7 they have dinner. Whis says that the connection between Goku Black and Zamasu is highly unlikely. After dinner Beerus and Whis go home and Goku decides to take nap. Later Goku feels Vegeta and Future Trunks's Ki while they are sparring. He gets Bulma and teleport them to where Vegeta is sparring with Future Trunks. After training Future Trunks decides he will become stronger then Black and Vegeta.
These events do not happen in the manga - and as such Black never destroyed Trunks' time machine like he did in the anime. The Z Fighters still have to wait for Trunks' time machine to be re-fueled and during this time they play a racing video game.
Goku soon after finds out that Zen-Oh wants to see him but tells Beerus that he can't right now because Bulma is almost done fixing the Time Machine and that he has to go to the Future soon. Beerus than tells him to go see Zen-Oh now. Whis and Goku go to Shin and asks them to teleport them to Zen-Oh's planet. They are then greeted by a being known as the Great Priest. He then escorts them to Zen-Oh where Zen-Oh was happy to see Goku. Zen-Oh then reveals that the reason he wanted to see Goku is because he wants to become Goku's friend and asks Goku to play with him. Goku then says he needs to be somewhere so he promises Zen-Oh to bring a friend for him. Goku, Whis, and Shin then leave and head back to universe 7. With the Time Machine fixed, Goku prepares to travel to the future with Vegeta and Future Trunks.
Upon arriving in the devastated alternate timeline, Goku is suddenly attacked by the resistance army (mistaking him to be Goku Black), but their attacks are deflected by Future Trunks, who explains that Goku is an ally. Goku and Vegeta accompany Future Trunks when he reunites with Future Mai, the resistance army, and the surviving civilians. After Vegeta leaves them capsules of food and supplies given to him by Bulma, the three Saiyans leave to confront Goku Black. After Vegeta fires a ki blast in the air to inform Goku Black of their location, Goku Black confronts them, and Vegeta immediately transforms into a Super Saiyan Blue and fights with Goku Black while Goku leaves a comment about Vegeta attacking someone who looks exactly like him. Goku watches in disdain as Goku Black reveals his Super Saiyan Rose form and easily defeats Vegeta. Goku then transforms himself and engages in combat with Goku Black, but he is knocked down to the ground after a brief scuffle. Goku is then shocked to see Zamasu (albeit his future counterpart) appear and stand next to Goku Black, wanting to kill Goku himself.
Goku then engages Future Zamasu in battle, noting something is different about him compared to the Zamasu he fought. Goku is eventually double-teamed by both Future Zamasu and Goku Black, and Future Trunks steps in the fight to even things out. Despite fighting 2 against 2, Goku and Future Trunks are being overwhelmed, with Future Trunks discovering Future Zamasu is immortal. The two are defeated by taking a full-force hit from a Black Kamehameha with Future Zamasu holding them in place so they could not escape. They are about to be finished off but are saved by Vegeta, who wakes up momentarily to intercept an attack fired at them. In the confusion, Goku and Future Trunks are saved and dragged away by Future Yajirobe, while Vegeta was saved by Future Mai. Future Mai sends the three Saiyans, beaten and unconscious, back to the past in the time machine. After crash-landing in front of Capsule Corp., the three injured Saiyans are quickly given Senzu Beans by Bulma (as Goku had accidentally left them behind in the bathroom before they went to the future).
Goku goes with Beerus, Whis and Shin to Universe 10, learning that Zamasu kills Gowasu. They leave upon seeing that Gowasu is still alive, but from a distance, they spy on the two, and eventually witness Zamasu killing Gowasu. Whis then performs a Temporal Do-Over and rewinds time, blocking Zamasu's attack with a glove he creates. Zamasu, cornered and exposed, prepares to fight Goku but he is intercepted and easily destroyed by Beerus. With Beerus insisting the future is now safe, Future Trunks decides to go and check, with Goku, Vegeta and Bulma going with him.
They realize that the future remain unchanged, and while Bulma stays with Future Mai, the Saiyan trio prepare to fight Goku Black and Future Zamasu again. Goku Black reveals his true identity; he is Zamasu from another timeline who used the Super Dragon Balls to switch bodies with Goku, then killing him, and using the Time Ring to travel to different timelines. He then recruited Future Zamasu, killed Future Gowasu, and used the Super Dragon Balls to make Future Zamasu immortal and then destroying them. He also says that he killed every Supreme Kai, and in turn killed every God of Destruction as the two positions are life-linked. The two teams fight head-to-head again, and in the anime Goku is angry to learn that Zamasu also killed Goten and Chi-Chi from that timeline, powering up and overpowering the two by himself. Goku Black grew even stronger from Goku's assault and used his increased strength to defeat Goku. Future Trunks, angry at the corrupt pair for blaming him for everything, assumed a new transformation and gained the power to fight both at the same time, while Goku, Vegeta and (in the anime) Bulma return to the present to figure out a plan. In the manga as they are retreating Goku realizes that he should learn the Evil Containment Wave to deal with Zamasu.
Goku is suggested by Piccolo to use the Evil Containment Wave, and teleports to Kame House where Master Roshi teaches him the technique, and he practices it on Turtle. After learning the technique, Master Roshi gives him an urn to use it on, and he, Vegeta (after training in the Time Chamber) and Bulma return back to the future. As Vegeta's new capabilities allowed him to push back Goku Black, Goku fought Future Zamasu to prevent him from helping his partner, in the anime becoming a Super Saiyan Blue.
Manga timeline: Goku transforms into Super Saiyan Blue and uses the Evil Containment Wave on Future Zamasu, but discovers soon after that he obtained the wrong seal and so Zamasu breaks free. Goku and Vegeta then look on in shock as Goku Black and Future Zamasu fuse into Fused Zamasu. After Future Zamasu breaks free Goku transforms into Super Saiyan God - noting that he does not have enough stamina left to become Super Saiyan Blue - and proceeds to easily beat down Future Zamasu. However, as both Future Zamasu and Goku Black were taken down about to be finished by Vegeta, Goku Black suggests the idea of fusion. Knowing what the duo were about to do, Goku tries to attack them before they do so but to no avail. Black and Zamasu proceed to put on their Potaras and they merge to become Fused Zamasu, with Goku and Vegeta witnessing the fusion in their horror.
Anime timeline: Black then surrounds Goku and Vegeta with his clones created through a rift with a slash with his scythe blocking Goku's usage of Instant Transmission, thus preventing them from chasing after Zamasu who went towards where Trunks, Bulma and Mai are. Eventually Black senses that Zmasu's ki is getting weaker due to nearly sealed with the Evil Containment Wave, Black immediately uses Instant Transmission to teleport himself to Zamasu with Goku doing the same thing taking Vegeta to where Trunks and the others are. Goku and the others immediately witness the Potara fusion of Black and Zamasu to create Fused Zamasu .
Goku and Vegeta then immediately engage Fused Zamasu in a battle but they are quickly overwhelmed by the latter's power. After Trunks and Vegeta successfully overpower Fused Zamasu's Holy Wrath with a Father-Son Galick Gun, Fused Zamasu nearly kills Vegeta with his Lightning of Absolution, Goku uses his God Kamehameha against Fused Zamasu's Holy wrath with the two powering up their respective attacks which resulted in a huge explosion.
In the anime Goku uses his full power to push back Fused Zamasu's Holy Wrath with his God Kamehameha, straining himself to the point where he could no longer use his arms. Regardless, Goku attacks with a barrage of kicks, and when Fused Zamasu crushes his left leg, he uses his right leg along with the Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken to land a huge blow, but Goku runs out of power and falls to the ground exhausted and helpless.
In both manga and anime Goku suggests that he and Vegeta fuse themselves. Gowasu explains that as he and Vegeta are not Supreme Kai, the Potara fusion would last one hour(explaining Vegito defusing in Super Buu's body in the Fusion Saga). As he convinces Vegeta, Goku eats a Senzu Bean and he and Vegeta use the Potara to fuse into Vegito, who fights a decisive battle with Fused Zamasu. However Vegito's Potara fusion ends prematurely, and Goku and Vegeta are knocked down.
In the anime Goku and Vegeta then bear witness to Future Trunks gaining massive power from everyone around him, and they lend Future Trunks their remaining power, watching him cleave Fused Zamasu in two with his new sword of ki.
In the manga Goku is then tortured by Fused Zamasu, who uses numerous portals to attack him. Goku is saved by Vegeta - who, due to having been fused with Goku, had learned that Goku had mastered Super Saiyan Blue - Vegeta throws Goku to Trunks who heals him. Goku then steps in to save Vegeta before he can be killed by Fused Zamasu. Goku then powers up into his Completed Super Saiyan Blue form and faces Fused Zamasu in combat, aiming to hold him off until he defuses. The two fight on even grounds, with Fused Zamasu attacking with portal punches and Goku dodging and closing the gap to retaliate. Fused Zamasu attacks with his Holy Wrath but Goku manages to through it away. Goku briefly loses focus and experiences some pain due to the overwhelming power he is sealing inside himself but manages to regain focus and prepares to continue his combat with Fused Zamasu. Goku and Fused Zamasu continue to battle with Goku appearing to be gaining an edge as Fused Zamasu's body is starting to crumble and Goku realizing he can't hold onto the form for much longer charges up one final attack to finish Fused Zamasu and charges him and much to everyone's shock, actually unleashes the God of Destruction's Destruction attack, previously only thought to be capable of being done by a God of Destruction and it mostly destroys Fused Zamasu but Goku stops the attack after one of Fused Zamasu's arms used Future Mai as a shield and takes the moment to knock Goku out. Trunks attacks but is unable to do anything and is swatted aside, believing they lost Vegeta gives up but shockingly Fused Zamasu suddenly begins to defuse and refuse rapidly. Shin realizes it has been exactly one hour but Gowasa reveals that they can't unfuse due to the fact they are technically the same person so there bodies may have bonded together at the cellular level. Before anything can happen, Future Trunks cuts the monstrosity in half and then stabs Goku Black through the back. Believing Black to be dead Goku moves in to congratulate Trunks when he is shot in the back by Black.Goku shocked questions what is going on when Zamasu gets up and suddenly both of them transform back into Fused Zamasu and begin to maul Goku. Vegeta despite being near dead charges up to full power and kicks Goku away and blasts both of the Fused Zamasu's with a new attack called the Gamma Bomb Blast. The attack is extremely deadly and effective vaporizing both Zamasu's. However Goku points out that they are only going to regenerate as Goku can still see pieces. Shin and Gowasa appear and suggest fleeing. Before they can flee the pieces suddenly take on a life of there own and turn into dozens of Fused Zamasu's.
However, Zamasu's essence and bodiless state merge with the universe killing the remaining mortals in earth with the exception of Goku, Vegeta, Trunks, Bulma and Future Mai. As a last resort, Goku summons Zen-Oh with the button he gave him during their last meeting and eventually Future Zeno appears who instantly erase Zamasu and all universes from existence , while Goku and the others return to the past. Goku returns with Trunks to the extinct future and take Future Zen-Oh to the past. Afterwards, Goku takes Future Zen-Oh to his present counterpart's palace, asking the two Zenos to be friends with each other, fulfilling Zen-Oh's promise to bring him a friend. The day after, Goku and company bid farewell to Future Trunks and Future Mai as they are heading to a new timeline created by Whis' alterations with Goku believing Trunks is strong enough to defeat any opponent.
Later that year, Goku begins to act strange and sense everything around him, realizing someone is after his life and that someone is Hit. When he senses Hit arriving on Earth, Goku leaves to confront him. Hit appears behind Goku and tells him that he was hired to kill him. Hit showing great respect to Goku offers to spare Goku's life if Goku were to disappear and will claim that he killed him, but Goku declines the offer. Hit expecting Goku to not take him up on his offer asks Goku to turn around, saying that he only kills from the front and will never kill from behind. Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan Blue and turns around prepared to fight, reminding Hit that Time-Skip won't work on him. Goku attacks but notices his attacks are going through Hit. Goku steps back assuming Hit is incapable of hitting him at a distance but was wrong and tries to kill Hit with a ki blast but is stopped by Hit successfully assassinating Goku with a single ki strike to the heart, with Goku dying before his body hits the ground. Piccolo, Gohan and Goten arrive moments after Goku is killed by Hit and discover his dead body. Piccolo throws the crying Goten aside and begins to perform CPR as hard as he can but Gohan sensing something looks up and notices a massive ki blast falling back to Goku and has everyone move. The blast strikes Goku in the heart, reviving the formerly dead saiyan, who tells them to get out of here as Hit is out to kill him. Goku and Hit continue there fight, with Goku starting to see how Hit's new moves work and figures them out on the third try.
Champa, Vados, Beerus, Whis and Vegeta all arrive telling them to continue and they are here to watch. Vados points out that Hit is no longer the assassin Hit but rather a martial artist. Champa mentions that Hit has to kill Goku as Goku is a major threat in Zen-Oh's upcoming tournament and that it was wise of Vados to hire hit to assassinate Goku, but Vados says she only hired Hit but there is someone else who wants Goku dead. Vados also explains Hit's new time skip powers as he can now create entire pockets of time skip and can use it to make his energy appear in several places at once. Goku having figured this out on his own powers up to maximum power and shatters this pocket dimension of time skip stunning Hit and Champa, with Hit backpedaling attempting to pull it back together Goku defeats him with a Kamehameha. After the fight everyone greets the pair with Vegeta upset Goku enjoy's fighting Hit more then himself and angry someone put a hit out on Goku and demands Hit to tell him with Hit refusing. Beerus accuses Vegeta but Vegeta mistakenly tells Beerus to shut up then apologizes to him. Suddenly Vegeta realizes who hired Hit and accuses Goku to which Goku confesses to hiring Hit through Vados. Whis explains that Goku approached him with the idea and agreed so got Goku in contact with Vados who hired Hit for him. When Beerus asked why would Whis do something so reckless Whis said Goku needs to train and Hit is perfect for him. Hit perplexed and proud of Goku admits Goku is far to complex for him to understand and smiles at his target. Hit asks Goku is there a time limit on his mission and Goku says no. To which Hit replies that he will kill him later then, smiles at Goku and leaves.
Universe Survival Saga
Once peace has returned following Fused Zamasu's defeat, Goku begins farming again, and takes his latest harvest to a trader, who claims that Goku's crops are very popular. Excited that he earned a lot of money due to his farming, Goku is relieved that he won't have to hear Chi-Chi nagging him anymore, and he can focus on his training. While driving away from the farmer's market in a Capsule Corp. truck, Goku spots another person who's truck is stuck in the road. Goku agrees to pull it out for him, but feels a gun pointed on his back. Discovering that he was tricked by a band of robbers, Goku refuses to give them his truck, and uses his Afterimage technique to trick the robbers when they begin firing their guns at him. Goku renders all but one robber unconscious. The last robber fires a bullet at Goku, which scratches him. After knocking out the last robber, Goku looks at his scratch and comes to the conclusion that he is getting rusty.
Goku then calls Krillin to ask if he wants to train with him, but he is too busy on a police mission. Instead, Goku calls Whis and agrees to give him bean daifuku for training him. Given a one hour time limit to get the bean daifuku and arrive at Capsule Corp, Goku rushes home and puts on his dogi. At home, Goten discovers that Goku is going out to train with Whis and wishes to come along as well. Chi-Chi forbids this, but the two sneak out when she is distracted. Goku and Goten head to Capsule Corp after picking up the bean daifuku. Once there, the two spot Bulma's large belly, and Goku comes to the conclusion that she has been eating too much, and is surprised to hear that she is pregnant again. Goku then decides to give the bean daifuku to Bulma, but is reminded by Goten that it is for Whis. Bulma understands when Goku wishes to give the food to Whis so he can train more.
After finding Vegeta, Goku asks him to come along and train with him and Whis. Vegeta rejects since Bulma is going to give birth soon. Goku is confused why Vegeta is passing up on training for his pregnant wife and mentions he had no choice missing Goten's birth because he was dead. Once Whis arrives, Goku heads off with Goku to Beerus's planet to train. While sparring against Whis, Beerus points out how Goku is rusty. To fight against stronger opponents once more, Goku asks Beerus what happened to the tournament that Zen-Oh was planning, but is immediately scolded by Beerus not to get involved with Zen-Oh. Not listening to Beerus, Goku travels to Zen-Oh's palace and asks Zen-Oh about the tournament. Zen-Oh reveals that he forgot about it. Future Zen-Oh becomes excited by the idea of a tournament after learning what it is, and the Grand Priest tells Goku that he will tell inform him of the details when they become available. Beerus punishes Goku when he returns, and Whis takes them to the Kai planet upon Goku's request.
On the Kai planet, the Grand Priest arrives and tells everyone the details of the Tournament of Power. After learning the information, Goku and the others are shocked by the fact that every losing universe will be erased from existence. The Grand Priest informs Goku that there will be an exhibition match held before the tournament so Future Zen-Oh can watch fights for the first time. Goku is instructed to find two other fighters in the next hour to join him in battling alongside three fighters from Universe 9 in the exhibition match. After the Grand Priest leaves, Beerus is furious because of Goku's actions. Goku tells everyone that he can ask Zen-Oh personally to revoke the rule about all losing universes being destroyed, but Whis tells him that it is not a wise decision since Zen-Oh already made up his mind.
Arriving back on Earth, Goku asks Vegeta, but he refuses to go so he can be by Bulma's side. Goku comes to the conclusion that Goten and Trunks are too weak to compete in the match, so he goes to Gohan. While being hesitant at first, Goku tells his son about the extreme stipulation about the losing universes being destroyed, also telling him to keep it a secret to himself. Goku and Gohan agree to keep the rule to themselves to prevent a worldwide panic. When Gohan agrees to fight to protect his family, Goku goes to Majin Buu to get him to join the match.
When Mr. Satan and the others appear, Goku goes straight to Buu and asks him to fight in the exhibition match. Buu agrees, and him, along with Goku, Mr. Satan, and Gohan return to the Kai planet. Goku informs Beerus that only himself and Gohan know about the stipulation to prevent worldwide panic. Shin takes everyone to Zen Oh's Palace, where the Grand Priest then takes them to the World of Void, where he set up a World Martial Arts Tournament-style ring with spectator seats. The Grand Priest tells Goku to be quiet when he becomes excited, while the former introduces the exhibition ceremony. When the Grand Priest introduces the Zen-Ohs, Goku flies up to greet them, calling them "Zen-chan", which makes the representatives of each universe believe he is disrespectful. Goku then thanks Zen-Oh for letting them fight first, and agrees to give them a good match to watch. After Grand Priest explains the rules, Majin Buu and Gohan face Basil and Lavender respectively, both winning. Goku is paired against Begamo, who declares Goku as a villain for suggesting the tournament and endangering the universes. Begamo allows Goku to hit him so he can increase his size but Goku reduces his increased size leaves him vulnerable to his blind spots. Goku is able to win but Toppo challenges Goku to a fight out of rage for Goku casually risking the existence of the universes. Both destroy the arena and almost use their most powerful techniques before Grand Priest calls off the battle and instructs everyone to gather ten warriors from each universe in the next 40 hours. Goku is more excited about the tournament than the possibility of losing Universe 7, causing Beerus to shout at him for being so carefree.
They teleport to Capsule Corp. to gather team members. Goku wants Monaka but Beerus lies that he is unwell. Goku refuses to consider Trunks and Goten because their rivalry will be an issue. Goku agrees on Krillin, Master Roshi, 18, and 17. He and Gohan then ask Vegeta, who again refuses because he wants to see his child's birth and wonders why Goku wants him to participate so badly. After Whis uses his time-warping ability to speed up the birth of Vegeta's daughter, Bulla, Goku congratulates Vegeta and holds the baby while remarking she looks nothing like him. Goku then goes to Krillin and 18's house to recruit them. Both refuses until Goku lies about a ten million zeni reward, although 18 is suspicious when Goku mixes up the number. Goku has a sparring session with Krillin to test his strength and decides Krillin is not only his true best friend but a strong warrior. He then goes to Tien, who also refuses because he can't leave his dojo students. However, Tien changes his mind and decides to use the fake award for his dojo. Goku meets with Piccolo, who knows the truth about the tournament and the universe might be erased if they lose. Piccolo agrees to participate and they train Gohan at the former's request to help him awaken his full potential. Gohan is able to do so but struggles to hold up against Goku and Piccolo, and asks Goku to fight him full-on. Goku agrees and fights Gohan as Super Saiyan Blue and effortlessly knocks Gohan down but states he is impressed and nominates Gohan as the leader of Universe 7 team.
They return to Capsule Corp. to develop a strategy and Goku gets some quick training with Whis. Bulma tells them that Majin Buu has fallen asleep and won't be participating. Goku rushes over to Mr. Satan's house to try to wake him up to no avail. When he returns to Capsule Corp, he is confronted by his friends for lying about the reward and the truth about the tournament, and Goku apologizes. Beerus reminds everyone about being short a team member, and Goku suggests they recruit Frieza to participate as Majin Buu's replacement, much to everyone's shock. Goku explains his plan to ask Fortuneteller Baba to bring Frieza back for 24 hours but everyone, especially Vegeta, is opposed to this. Goku nevertheless goes to King Yemma to get permission to talk to Frieza in Hell. When he finds Frieza, Goku explains the situation and Frieza will only agree if Goku uses the Dragon Balls to resurrect him if Universe 7 wins. Goku refuses but gives in when Frieza offers to have a fighting session with him, but Goku pretends to agree to Frieza's term.
After fending off assassins from Universe 9 and survived Sidra's secret weapon (thrown at him by Frieza) thanks to Beerus' intervention, he joined with the group alongside Frieza and went to the World of Void together. Afterwards, he reunited with old fighters and met new ones before the Great Priest emerged from the center of the arena and explained the rules for the tournament once again and Goku got as pumped as ever. Gohan then goes over the plan with the team and then Goku crossed eyes with Toppo once more and not long after that, the tournament that Goku came up with the idea for finally began.
Goku started by staying with the team before he went off to fight Toppo once again, who was clashing with Auta Magettaat the time, before being confronted by Ganos. Goku punched Ganos repeatedly with the latter's arms crossed before Goku knocked him away. He then found out that if you get benched if you get knocked off the arena. Goku then delivered a strong high kick at Ganos and later on, deflected a lot of Continuous Energy Bullet from him. Ganos then left to dodge a Justice Flash from Toppo and the latter finally recognized Goku from the last time they met, but was soon punched in the face by Murichim. Goku then finally caught up with Jiren, but before they can duke it out, Nink caught him a Bear Hug and attempted to sacrifice himself to take out Goku, even after being punched in the face repeatedly by him, only for him to transform into Super Saiyan Blue at the last minute then held onto the edge, got back up and reverted back to his base form. He was then confronted by Team Universe 9, making him excited. Goku begins to fend off Universe 9 alone but soon Vegeta jumps in to assist Goku knowing that they have more important things to do. Together Goku and Vegeta power up to Super Saiyan and fight as one to defeat Universe 9 leaving the Trio de Dangerous for the end. Making a last stand the trio fired their most powerful blasts at Goku and Vegeta, Goku and Vegeta responded by going Super Saiyan Blue and create a double team attack of there own, the Final Kamehameha; Goku firing his Kamehameha through Vegeta's Final Flash entwining the blasts into one giant super blast powerful enough to actually make every single combatant stop fighting to watch as Universe 9 is destroyed.
Goku then fought Jimmies of Universe 2 who was seen teleporting around him in his Super Saiyan form. Jimmies gets ready to attack Goku, but Caulifla intercepts him and knocks him away. Caulifla challenges Goku herself, showing interest in his Super Saiyan Blue form. Goku says she is not ready to learn that transformation yet, and Caulifla tries to impress him by becoming a Super Saiyan Third Grade, not aware that Goku already knows about the form. Once she is easily defeated, Goku tells her about the drawbacks, and tells her that she should work on becoming a Super Saiyan 2, but Caulifla tells him that she has attained that form already. Caulifla transforms while Goku, impressed by Caulifla's talent, says she might be able to reach Super Saiyan 3 in their fight. Caulifla is surprised and elated to hear there was another super Saiyan form. Caulifla and Goku fight one-on-one in their Super Saiyan 2 forms, unintentionally ignoring Kale as she is having fun. When Kale tries to support Caulifla by attacking Goku, Goku asks her to not interfere.
Kale, showing jealously towards Goku for taking her sis away from her, transforms and gains a hatred for Goku, which is so intense that her initial attack on Goku almost knocked Caulifla off the stage, but she is saved by Hit. She then personally fights Goku, easily able to shrug off his attacks and knock the older Saiyan back. Even when Goku becomes a Super Saiyan Blue, Kale and lets out a little more power still has the upper hand, even walking through his Kamehameha unfazed, however, was noticeably winded from doing so. After Kale lost her reasoning in a blinding rage and caused chaos on the entire battlefield, she grabbed Goku in the face, but, retaining some composure, she instead throws him aside rather than kill him. Later on, after Jiren defeated Kale easily, Goku confronted Jiren and decided to finally fight him. However, before he could attack Jiren, Toppo attacked him with a Justice Flash from behind. After he appeared from underground, he meets Kale and Caulifla, who accuses him of trying to attack Kale while she is weakened. He immediately denies these accusations. Later on, he fights alongside Android 17, Android 18 , Kale, and Caulifla (although indirectly) against Cocotte, Kahseral, Tupper, Zoiray, and Kettol. He watches as Kale and Caulifla break through Cocotte's barrier, and as 18 eliminates Cocotte. He then lets both Caulifla and Kale go off on their own, because he believes the two of them will become even stronger and wants to fight them later in the tournament when they do.
Once the Pride Troopers were taken care of, Goku thanked the Androids for their help and ran off to find Jiren again, but was soon distracted by the Kamikaze Fireballs, who were about to begin their transformation, and Goku was excited to see them transform, only for 17 to interrupt the first time, and he, alongside the girls and Toppo scolded him for it. Afterwards, Goku witnessed the completed transformation firsthand and eventually went up against Su Roas after he smelled the odor from Brianne de Chateau's Light of Love. Goku casually blocked all of Su's punches, while Su demonstrates her Yacchaina Fist, firing energy blasts at Goku that manages to push him back. When 17 knocked off Sanka. Goku was impressed, noting that 17 was hiding some powers when they fought on the island.
Rozie kept on firing ki blasts at Goku with more aggression due to Sanka's elimination, and the Saiyan kept deflecting them except for the ones that acted as feints stopping just short of hitting him as a surprise and then hitting him while he's dazed/confused, pushing him back as a result. She then unleashed her Yacchaina Fist at Goku again, and he expected to block it, only for the attack to act more like Piccolo's Hellzone Grenade, intent on getting revenge, but then Android 17 showed up and used his Energy Barrier to protect himself and Goku. After Brianne got back to fighting with 17, Su Roas went back to fighting Goku, but by that time, the Saiyan figured out her fighting style and used it against her as he dodged her ki blasts and surrounded her with bigger ones, resulting in a huge direct hit. He then watched as Su regrouped with Brianne and Jimeze and then teleported away. He then joined Piccolo and watched Gohan fight and eventually defeated Botamo then decided to break off on his own once again.
Goku then rushed off to Hit's aid in his Super Saiyan God form when the latter was about to be finished off by Dyspo and to even the odds. Hit says he doesn't need Goku's help, but Goku replies that he isn't there to help him, he just wants to fight. Hit tells Goku that Dyspo is his opponent and Goku should not interfere, and Goku tells Hit to try and stop him as he attacks. Dyspo speed-blitzes Goku and knocks him back, but before Hit can attack him right after, he is caught by Kunshi. Goku compliments Dyspo's speed and prepares to use Instant Transmission, but Dyspo proves to be too fast for even that. When Dyspo attacks again, Goku turns into Super Saiyan Blue to defend against his attack, saying that while Dyspo may be fast, his movements are too linear thus easy to predict. Goku then switched places with Hit and went after Kunshi. Goku turns Blue again and attacks Kunshi, ignoring his exploding whips, landing a clean blow, but Hit was the one who eventually knocked him off the stage. Goku compliments Hit for getting stronger again, but then says once Dyspo recovers, he'll be the one to defeat him. Hit is uninterested, and when Goku asks if they're gonna fight, Hit decides to walk away in response to Goku helping him out. Goku says that if he survives until the end, they should settle their score. After the fight, Goku fought Maji Kayo, who trapped him in a grip, from which he was unable to get out of, even as a Super Saiyan. After Master Roshi defeats Ganos and almost dies, Goku goes Super Saiyan Blue, frees himself and goes to help Roshi. Goku then successfully revives Master Roshi, and then the two head off together. Master Roshi sits down on a rock, Goku asks him if he will be fine, Roshi tells him he will be fine with some rest. Roshi then tells Goku to go on and fight for him. Goku then departs. Goku and Vegeta approach Tien while he is investigating Dr. Rota' unconscious body. Goku and Vegeta are attacked by the sniper and they duck. Goku, Vegeta and Tien watch as Gohan and Piccolo are being attacked, Goku notices Prum and says that one attacks while Prum reflects it. Goku and Vegeta then go to take out Prum, charging a Kamehameha and Galick Gun respectively, and destroy Prum's position. Goku is shocked that Prum can reflect Ki Blasts. If Ki Blasts won't work, Vegeta decides to throw rocks, and Goku follows him. After Hermila is eliminated, Goku and Vegeta corner Prum, who runs away but is tackled by Dr. Rota. Vegeta then takes out both, out of annoyance. Goku tells Vegeta that they lost 2 members, however Vegeta tells him it doesn't matter as long as they take out the rest. Goku tells Vegeta to fight to their fullest, for Krillin and Tien. The two then depart together. Goku witnesses as Jiren eliminates Maji Kayo and he is left in awe at Jiren's might. Goku sees Master Roshi being attacked by Frost and goes to help him, however Ribrianne gets in his way.
Fated Battle - Goku vs. Jiren
Goku battled Ribrianne in for some time, easily holding his own against her love based attacks. During their battle, when she asked what Goku intended to use the Super Dragon Balls for should he win the tournament, he responded that he had not decided yet, though he mused briefly about letting Chi Chi or one of his sons decide for him. Their battle continued a short while longer, with Ribrianne powering up into a winged Super Ribrianne form. Goku easily overpowered her by transforming into his Super Saiyan Blue state but was distracted from finishing her off by Jiren.
Goku began his battle with Jiren in his base state and slowly powered up over time in order to test the Pride Trooper's abilities. Though Jiren seemed unphased by Goku's attacks in his Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2 forms, he did exert a minor effort when confronted by a Super Saiyan God. Seeing no choice, Goku powered back up to Super Saiyan Blue and the fight began in earnest. Goku and Jiren's battle brought the entire Tournament of Power to a halt as every single person in the World of the Void stopped to watch. Goku fought to his limit, utilizing his Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken x20 form - which Jiren held off with relative ease.
Seeing no other choice, Goku dropped back to his base form and gathered energy from all of the Universe 7 fighters (except for Vegeta, who flatly refused to help) to create a massive Spirit Bomb. He threw it at Jiren, who managed to catch it and return it back at Goku. The two warriors struggled to push the attack on one another, with Goku powering back up to Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken x20. Ultimately, Goku's power gave out and he collapsed, falling into his own Spirit Bomb. The massive energy ball detonated, nearly destroying the tournament stage.
Legendary Awakening - A Never Before-seen Power
Though everyone present believed that Goku had been vaporized by his own blast, he had in fact absorbed its energy. The power of the Spirit Bomb, combined with his own innate energy, caused Goku to undergo an amazing new transformation. Unlocking his deepest potential, he reached a state referred to by the gods as "Ultra Instinct." He gained 100% control of movement and ki energy, allowing him to potentially surpass all of the Gods of Destruction present.
|“||Precisely. The energy of the Spirit Bomb must be acting as a temporary source of power for his depleted body. However, the main point is something else. In that big explosion, the raging power of the Spirit Bomb that entered Goku, and Goku's own power to resist it... beyond that clash of power, Goku broke through the shell to the deeper potential within himself. That's my assumption.||„|
— Whis' assumption on Goku's Ultra Instinct accessibility.
Seeing Goku's new power, Toppo and Dyspo attempted to aid Jiren. Goku held them off with no effort until Jiren dismissed them from the battle. Then Goku and Jiren renewed their battle. This time, the pair appeared evenly matched. The battle raged until Goku burned through his new energy and dropped back to his base form. Jiren gained the upper hand and prepared to throw Goku from the ring until Hit intervened, attacking Jiren.
While Hit distracted Jiren, Vegeta interrogated a now exhausted Goku about his new form. Goku replied that he didn't understand the new form at all or know where the power had come from, angering Vegeta. Goku retreated to rest and regain his stamina, only to be accosted by Freeza. Freeza leveled an energy blast on Goku and mused that the occassion brought back old memories of Planet Namek.
Ten years after the defeat of the evil, pure Majin Buu, Goku kept training despite the fact that Earth was at peace. He is training with his youngest son, Goten. When the tournament comes around, Goku forces Goten to cancel his date to enter and Goten shows disdain toward Goku's ruling. During the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament, Goku battles Majin Buu's reincarnation, Uub, who was born after King Yemma heard his request made ten years ago. However, Uub was experiencing an extreme bout of Stage Fright, so Goku was forced to make several insults towards his family and obscene gestures to try and get him angry enough to fight and overcome his fear.
In the beginning of the series, as a 12 year old, Goku is rather short, and his appearance can actually trick his age, with some considering him to be much less than 10 years old, and get rather surprised when they hear his actual age. During the next few years, Goku did not present many physical changes, other than his muscles becoming more pronounced. It wasn't until his first growth spurt between the age of 15 and 18 that he became almost indistinguishable from before, and was only recognized by his naive personality and "trademark" hairstyle. He had grown quite taller than most of his friends, with a well-built physique, with Bulma even calling him "handsome". Years later, between the ages 25-30 (seemingly after his first battle against Frieza), Goku seemingly had another growth spurt, and became slightly more taller, and much more muscular, finally reaching his physical prime, and the appearance essentially remaining the same from there on.
Perhaps Goku's most distinguishing physical characteristic, both in real-world and in the series, is his spiky black hair that never changes throughout the franchise (except when in his various Super Saiyan forms), he has 4 spikes on the right, and 3 on the left side, with some hair strands between them (except in Super he has 5 spikes on the right, and 4 on the left side).
Goku is the spitting image of his father, Bardock, possessing an identical black hairstyle unique to himself and his father, however, he has a softer face and lighter pale skin complexion from his mother, Gine.
He is most commonly seen wearing his trademark orange/red/golden gi over a dark blue short-sleeved undershirt. This gi has featured either Master Roshi's, King Kai's, or Goku's own kanji on its back, as well as Roshi's or Goku's kanji on the front-left side (around the stomach-area). After the Frieza Saga and until the God of Destruction Beerus Saga, Goku doesn't wear any kanji on his gi, but he retains the dark blue undershirt. He also wears dark blue wristbands, along with dark blue boots with a yellow border (later red) that are outfitted with red laces (later tan). He originally wore a blue obi tied in a knot over his waist, although after the Frieza Saga this was changed to a blue sash.
Several of Goku's battles end with both of his shirts completely destroyed. While this only happens to Goku a few times in the actual series (mainly during his first battle with Vegeta and his epic battle with Frieza on Namek), the movies made it a running gag of sorts (between The World's Strongest and Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan). His pants often suffer minor damage in battle too, while his boots and wristbands usually remain perfectly intact somehow.
In the beginning of Dragon Ball, Goku is introduced wearing a blue gi with red wristbands, a white obi tied in a bow over his waist and dark blue kung fu shoes. As a kid, he also wields the Power Pole and has a tail due to his Saiyan heritage. Beginning with the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament and for the majority of Dragon Ball, Goku wears the basic Turtle School gi as his main outfit until after his training with Kami and Mr. Popo. At the 23rd World Tournament and for the remainder of Dragon Ball, Goku has his tail permanently removed by Kami (to prevent him from transforming into a Great Ape after Kami brought back the moon) and wears an updated Turtle School gi that features the same short-sleeved undershirt and boots that become part of his signature outfit throughout Dragon Ball Z. At the very end of Dragon Ball Z, Goku wears a turquoise gi with a white obi, orange wristbands, dark green pants, and black kung fu shoes with orange stockings.
At times, Goku has been seen wearing different clothing, such as a gray business suit and tie. Most notably, after training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber and in the nine days before the Cell Games, he wears casual Earth clothing consisting of an orange-and-black long-sleeved jacket, a white tank top, lime green pants, and brown shoes. At the party for the defeat of Kid Buu, Goku wears a lilac suit as part of his formal wear.
Despite being a Saiyan, Goku has never preferred wearing the same Battle Armor that his fellow Saiyans typically wore while serving under the Galactic Frieza Army, due to his devotion to Earth. The only notable time he did wear Battle Armor was during his training with Gohan inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. This armor set was identical to the one Vegeta wore at the time; consisting of a blue long-sleeved jumpsuit, white gloves, white boots with yellow tips, and a white battle jacket with yellow shoulder straps and a yellow stomach and lower back. As soon as he completed his training in the Time Chamber, Goku changed back into his regular gi, claiming that he wanted to fight as an Earthling.
In Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Goku wears a blue and white tracksuit (which features King Kai's "Kaio" kanji on the back) while he trains on King Kai's planet, but wears a red-orange and blue gi identical to the one he wore in the Androids Saga and Majin Buu Saga (with Goku's "Go" kanji on the front-left and back) for the majority of the film. In Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’, Goku wears a new orange gi that lacks a blue undershirt and features blue wristbands longer than previous, a blue obi tied in a knot at his side, and new blue boots (as well as Whis' kanji on the front-left of his shirt).
In Dragon Ball Super, while farming radishes, Goku wears the same farmer attire from Yo! Son Goku and Friends Return!! After arriving on King Kai's planet, King Kai wants Goku to have proper apparel while on his planet so he puts on a the same blue and white track suit with red shoes from Battle of Gods. Goku is later given a new gi Whis has designed for him, the same gi from Resurrection ‘F’. In episode 69, he wears a dark blue business suit and has gel in his hair, but his hair changes back to it's regular appearance and also ends up ripping the sleeves off before eventually switching back to his regular gi.
During the time where Goku aids the Time Patrol, as seen in Dragon Ball Heroes, Goku wears a black outfit with a red top and a blue sash. He also uses his Power Pole again, and carries a bag for Senzu Beans. While wearing these clothes, Goku is referred to as Xeno Goku.
As Dragon Ball was initially based on Journey to the West, the character of Goku was based on the Monkey King, Sun Wukong. Goku's design was based on Tanton, of Akira Toriyama's prototype manga Dragon Boy and Tongpoo, from his other manga The Adventures of Tongpoo. When Toriyama started his first draft of Dragon Ball, he originally planned on making Goku full monkey to make the series more faithful to Journey to the West. During Toriyama's second draft, he wanted to make Goku a full human dressed in sailor clothes that rode a flight mecha instead of the Flying Nimbus. Toriyama's third and final draft of Goku was to have him human looking with a monkey tail.
Son Goku (孫悟空) is a Buddhist name that means “The Child Aware of Emptiness” and comes from his character development based on Sun Wukong (in Chinese and Japanese: 孫悟空; Sūn means "grandchild" in both languages and implies his origin as a monkey, and Wùkōng means "Aware of Emptiness") from Journey to the West. The name “Goku” means "awakened to emptiness"; the Go syllable means "Enlightenment", and the Ku syllable means "Sky or Emptiness". Son (孫) is also a common Chinese surname.
|“||Despite all my heinous provocations on Namek, Goku still couldn't will himself to destroy me. He's a noble man of great moral clarity. So pure, he makes me want to vomit!||„|
— — Frieza describing his disgust at Goku's compassion in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’
Goku is known for his cheerful, energetic personality and his love for competition and eating. He takes most situation in stride, rarely letting things get him worked; the first time he lost his tail, while initially freaking out, he instantly got over it. He will eat anything. Goku's love for food can be comical at times. In the Tournament Saga, when put to sleep by "Jackie Chun", Bulma was able to save his match by screaming to him that dinner was ready, to which Goku immediately woke up to break the count. He has remarkable intuition to see the good in others in spite of their actions, though his capacity for forgiving has occasionally been criticized as excessive even to a fault and has lead to harm and death to those he cares about in extreme occasions; though Goku mostly fights to win, he often spares his enemies even if they in turn attack him.
His staggering power is simultaneously reined in and enhanced by his fierce loyalty and morality. Goku can be very blunt and not afraid to express his opinion in a discussion. While generally kind and not intentionally rude, Goku tends to not show proper respect to people of high authority. Despite his kind-hearted nature, Goku can feel incredible anger in extreme situations such as the death of a friend/relative or innocents murdered, showing he can be vengeful. He has a simple, practical view of the world that often comes off as naïve, which often makes many incorrectly assume him to be somewhat stupid. While often taking things to face-value, he comprehends the situation quickly and learns the basics of anything presented to him rather quickly. To which, he is repeatedly proven a very effective tactician, quickly see through his opponent's strength and battle tactics to formulate an effective countermeasure. Even more, he can determine his own flaws as he realized the limits of Super Saiyan Second Grade and chose to instead refine his normal Super Saiyan form, showing noteworthy craftiness and innovation. His most remarkable ability is his will and tenacity to succeed, always determined to push himself beyond his limits and never give up even in such overwhelming adversity.
Goku is pure of heart, possessing no negative feelings or thoughts. He is also shown to be very innocent since childhood, because of growing up in Mount Paozu and not having met anyone other than his grandpa until he meets Bulma. During his childhood, he had difficulty telling the difference between a male and a female without physically touching them, which often gets him into trouble, until he eventually outgrew this once old enough to understand the difference. Goku is shown to be scared of overbearing women like Bulma and Chi-Chi. During the Frieza Saga, when Goku refused to come back to Earth, Master Roshi jokingly (and rather loudly) declared that Goku was scared to face Chi-Chi, stating "The man's terrified of his wife! For all his power as a Super Saiyan, the one thing he can't stand up to is her!". In Battle of Gods and Dragon Ball Super, Goku panicked when he realized he forgot to go to Bulma's birthday party. Over the years, Goku has shown little modesty, not at all concerned about being nude in public (though he was less concerned with this as a child than he later is as an adult). Despite his purity, it has grown to more of a morality driven emotion, as Goku shows animosity towards those he believes have earned it from him, such as when Frieza killed Krillin and when learning that Goku Black not only stole his body and then killed him, but also proceeded to murder his family (in particular Chi-Chi and Goten) shortly afterwards simply out of spite. Overall, as Goku told Android 17, he has no desire for recognition nor considers himself a savior. His only goals in life is test his might against strong opponents and never let innocent people or animals get hurt, as he was taught by his adoptive grandfather.
Despite his compassion for others, Goku might not have a sense of familial ties, but rather views his family simply as companions. However, Goku expresses a strong desire to protect his family and friends, shown from his visions of them during his battle against Frieza. Even more, when learning that Goku Black killed the future version of his family, Goku became so enraged that he quickly overwhelmed Black and Future Zamasu in retribution, and, although Black appeared unconscious and defeated afterward, Goku only hesitated for a short while before attempting to attack him again. Also, Goku was very happy to learn he was going to be a grandfather in Battle of Gods, to which he later (in the anime) enjoyed taking care of his baby granddaughter Pan and grew very concerned when she disappeared. Also, while he is rarely seen being romantic or intimate with Chi-Chi and mainly married Chi-Chi because he promised to, he has cited her feistiness and passion as traits he finds especially endearing (as well as her cooking skills).
Notably, he mentioned in the "Future" Trunks Saga that he has never kissed Chi-Chi, although he did kiss her once in the anime version of the Androids Saga, albeit off-screen. Due to his pure-hearted nature, Goku lacks lustful feelings and as a result has very little interest in women, which is evident as he off reacts innocently to the sight of partially dressed or nude women. As a result seduction techniques such Amorous Glance and Stripping have no effect on him. However as an adult, Goku is shown to recognize perversion in others as he noted the similarities between Master Roshi and Old Kai who are both lecherous old men. However even as an adult Goku retains his disinterest in women (with the possible exception of his wife) which is shown in the Dragon Ball Super anime when he accidentally sees Bulma naked after teleporting into her room via Instant Transmission due to his Delayed Onset Ki Disorder. Additionally, though it is never actually depicted in the series, Goku can apparently be intimate with his wife given the fact that he has fathered two children with her. Along with this, Goku tends to prioritize his training over all else, often choosing to train rather than meet with his friends (although many of the other Z Fighters tend to do this too). He will often leave his family for long periods, and though normally for noble reasons such as maintaining his strength for the protection of the world, Goku does not realize how this negatively affects his family, and so some of his friends, like Bulma. Goku originally wanted to train Gohan to be a martial artist like himself, but his attempts where foiled by the overprotective Chi-Chi who wanted Gohan to grow up to be a scholar, though this was partially due to Chi-Chi wanting to prevent Gohan from ending up becoming too much like his father and because she felt that the martial arts is no longer necessary as the world was at peace following the defeat of Piccolo, though she would later allow Goku to train with Gohan once it became apparent that the world was under threat by powerful fighters such as the Androids. Due to his death during the Cell Games, Goku was unable to train Goten until the Majin Buu Saga and instead Goten was initially trained in martial arts ironically by Chi-Chi herself, whose views on the martial arts had chanced after Gohan defeated Cell and Goku's second death during the Cell Games. As Goku has little understanding of financial matters, as he tends to be ignorant when it comes to money and as a result, he and his wife have been supported by Ox-King's wealth (and possibly the prize money he won for winning the World Martial Arts Tournament) for most of their marriage.
After Ox-King lost his treasure when it was buried by a fire, leaving him and Goku's family broke, Goku was forced by Chi-Chi to become a radish farmer to support his family, only allowing Goku to go train at King Kai's after he accepted the reward money from Mr. Satan, which he only did after Goten pointed out that Chi-Chi would let him go train if he accepted it, showing that even his young son Goten has a better understanding of money than Goku himself. Goku's trouble when it comes to money is again shown during the written test during the Tournament between Universes 6 and 7 when he has trouble with a math test involving money, indicating that his main trouble with money may be a result of being being poor at mathematics. It should be noted that Goku received most of his schooling while training under Master Roshi whose training involved working to improve his students minds as well as their bodies during which time Roshi taught Goku how to read using the adult book Bob & Margaret which was apparently easy enough for young Goku and Good Buu to read. In contrast, Goku's son Gohan and by lesser extent Goten have received a far better education than their father due to the education-minded Chi-Chi, thus explaining how Goten has a better understanding of money matters than even Goku as he likely received schooling at a much early age.
However, this falls in line with Goku's intelligence being more adapted to fighting and training, as shown by his immediately seeing the drawbacks of the Power Stressed Super Saiyan forms and decided it would be better to just master the Super Saiyan form completely, causing even Vegeta to admit Goku was a genius for figuring that out. While Goku is capable of hard work when it comes to training, he tends to dislike work especially when it gets in the way of his training to the point of even taking off from work to secretly train without Chi-Chi's knowledge. Goku also freaked out when he learned that Vegeta had been training under Whis and getting stronger than him to the point he became determined to train under Whis as well, even if it meant openly going against his wife after she found out he was trying to leave to train, who though angry was surprisingly understanding and Goku himself revealed to Whis that he knew Chi-Chi would be okay with him leaving showing that while both he and Chi-Chi may disagree at times they ultimately have a deeper understanding one another. Additionally, Goku loves his wife and sons as shown by him becoming enraged to learn of their counterpart's death at the hands of Goku Black, going as far as to brutally attack the man for his actions and not letting up even when he was seemingly defenseless.
Goku seems to think very little of his Saiyan family, having never learned the good traits of his parents. Even more, when he first learned of his Saiyan heritage, he rejected it out of horror and disgust at being from a race of vicious killers, though he ultimately embraced his heritage after hearing Vegeta's last words during the battle with Frieza on Namek, fighting him to avenge the loss of his race as well as all of the other innocents whom Frieza had killed. While Goku is unquestionably kindhearted, forgiving, and loyal to the side of good, his Saiyan bloodline and its traits for combat have played a moderate role in his judgment, such as staying on the self-destructing Namek to finish his fight with Frieza. He can also be reckless in his gambles; when realizing that Gohan's dormant capacities could defeat Cell, he chose to focus all his efforts on training his son instead of himself, forgetting that Gohan was even gentler than him to the point of being a pacifist. Though he did not consider Raditz his brother due to his evil personality, Goku was willing to give him a chance to change his ways as he choose to let go of Raditz's tail when he convinced the naïve Goku that he had been bluffing about killing him to convince him to join him, though once it became apparent that Raditz had tricked him and had no problem with killing his brother or nephew Gohan, Goku became determined to stop his brother even to the point of (indirect) fratricide and sacrificing his own life, though it should be noted that Raditz gave Goku little alternative but to work with Piccolo to kill him. After his death and resurrection, upon learning they were actual brothers from King Yemma, Goku had no problem calling Raditz such even doing so with a smile.
Goku seems to have inherited most of his parents' positive traits as he inherited his mother's gentle and caring personality. He also shares his father's sense of camaraderie and even vengeful nature as both become enraged at the deaths of their close friends and comrades, rage which would play a role in them both becoming Super Saiyans (as Bardock's transformation in Episode of Bardock was the result of Chilled reminding Bardock of Frieza's role in the destruction of planet and death of his crew). Goku's vengeful nature was first shown when Tambourine killed Krillin which caused Goku an immense amount of grief, leading him to seek to avenge his fallen friend and kill Tambourine. This is again shown during his battle with Nappa, in which he attacks Nappa and delivers a blow for each one of his friends that where killed, and again when Frieza killed Krillin mercilessly, which sparked his transformation into a Super Saiyan. This is once again shown in Dragon Ball Super when he learned that Goku Black had killed Chi-Chi and Goten after stealing his body. However unlike Bardock, Goku's vengeful nature as an adult is tempered by his gentle nature and naivety, thus he generally lacks his father's ruthlessness as an adult he was willing to spare the lives of Nappa, the Ginyu Force and Frieza, despite all the evil they had done. It is only when Goku realizes that sparing an enemy would not be very good as it could lead to even more worse scenarios, this forced Goku to kill Frieza to prevent Earth's destruction after Whis rewinds time. Goku only kills his enemies when necessary, or if they are beyond redemption, or if they can be brought back a better person.
|“||My dad?! M-My dad is training you? What's he like? Is he nice? Is he...is he mean? I've never met my dad before, so I was really surprised when you told me he's training you! Maybe I should go meet him... Ooh, I should bring Gohan!||„|
— — Goku in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2
In Xenoverse 2, after learning the Future Warrior is training under his father, Goku shows an interest in learning more about him as he asks the Warrior what his father is like and even considers going to meet him with Gohan. Given Goku's good nature it stands to reason that Goku would likely be more accepting of his parents than he was with his brother Raditz, if were he to learn of their positive traits.
One of the greatest influences on Goku's character was his adoptive Grandpa Gohan. Though Goku as the Saiyan Kakarot initially wanted little to do with the old man's kindness, after the head injury that caused him to lose his memory of his life as Kakarot along with his more violent Saiyan tendencies, Goku became a pure hearted boy who looked up to Gohan and cared for him greatly. Grandpa Gohan's was a strong and positive influence on Goku even after his death. While Goku was lacking in manners and knowledge of the outside world due to growing up in the isolation of Mt. Paozu, Goku remembered Gohan teaching him to be respectful of girls which he revealed to Bulma after he learned she was a girl, though Gohan was apparently unable to teach Goku the gender differences between men and women before his death, resulting in Goku having trouble telling the difference initially. In Dragon Ball Super, Goku reveals to Android 17 that he learned his sense of mortality from Grandpa Gohan, thus the old man was one of the most important influences on Goku. Goku cares deeply for his grandfather as shown by his reaction to meeting him during the Fortuneteller Baba Saga. Even with the revelation that he and the Elder Gohan where not blood related or even the same race, Goku still considers the old man to be family as shown by his reaction when he realized that he had caused the old man's death as a Great Ape during the fight with Great Ape Vegeta (as Goku's friends who realized the role Goku's Great Ape form played in his grandfather's death had kept knowledge of the form from him to spare him from the horrible truth that he had accidently killed his grandfather), even apologizing to him and asking his grandfather's forgiveness when he sees him in heaven. His grandfather was also Goku's first martial arts teacher as the old man trained Goku like steel teaching him the basics of fighting as well as techniques such as Rock, Scissors 'N' Paper and presumably how to wield the Power Pole, training which Goku excelled at due to his Saiyan heritage.
As a result of their bond, Goku treasured the Power Pole and 4-Star Dragon Ball left behind by his grandfather after his death. Interestingly, after Gohan's death, as a child Goku seemed to believe the 4-Star Dragon Ball contained the old man's spirit as he would speak it as if it where his grandpa and even mistakenly thought that the two Dragon Balls Bulma showed him contained the spirits of her grandpas. However this could be attributed to Goku's young age and possibly as a coping mechanism to deal with Gohan's sudden death as well as to alleviate his loneliness after his grandfather's death. He would eventually grow out of this once he had a better understood of death and the history of the Dragon Balls, though continued to treasure the 4-Star Ball as a memento of him. Goku's bond with his grandfather extends to those who were close to his grandfather, such as Master Roshi and Ox-King as he was happy to learn they had known his grandfather. Both would ironically become Goku's martial arts mentor and father-in-law respectively. After their brief reunion when Gohan was brought back for a day by Fortuneteller Baba, Goku followed his grandfather's advice to train his tail to overcome his weakness as shown during Goku's match with Krillin at the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, once again demonstrating Gohan's influence on Goku. Goku even chose to name his first born son after him after his son reacted positively to the name and placed the 4-Star Dragon Ball on a hat to create the Four-Star Dragon Ball Hat for his young son to wear.
Goku also desires for his children to follow in his footsteps as a fighter, but he is generally accepting of their choices in lifestyle so long as they are happy and healthy. The only time he is shown to become angry is when Gohan chose to attend a conference over the tournament with Universe 6. During the Buu Saga, Goku has also expressed his concerns to Piccolo that his friends are sometimes too dependent on his strength in a crisis as he rationalizes that he will not always be around to help. He believes that the younger generation needs to become stronger in order to protect the Earth from future threats. However in Dragon Ball Super, when Dende told him about Uub (unnamed at the time) and suggested he train him, Goku was at first reluctant until Dende revealed that the boy was the reincarnation of Kid Buu, indicating that he himself is reluctant about training others (with the exception of his family and fellow Saiyans like Trunks) unless they have great potential. However, this fits with Goku's desire to fight strong opponents. In the Xenoverse series, it is implied that in addition to training the Future Warriors so they can be strong enough to defend history, his main reason for training them is so they can grow stronger so he can have fun fighting and training with them. It should also be noted that he does not train either Future Warrior until they have proven themselves extremely capable fighters as he only offers to train them after they manage to save the universe and complete the main story, again showing that Goku tends to only mentor those who pique his interest. While Goku wants his children to grow strong and not rely on him, he is also protective of his children in extremely dangerous situations, as shown when Gohan was kidnapped by his brother Raditz and even begged Raditz not to kill Gohan before resorting to sacrificing himself to stop Raditz, after it became apparent that Raditz would kill Gohan.
Goku can also be stern with his children during such situations such as when he yelled at Gohan not to talk back to him when Gohan was reluctant to leave his father's side after Goku's transformation into a Super Saiyan during his battle with Frieza, however did so to prevent Gohan or the injured Piccolo, from getting hurt by Frieza or even himself (as Goku feared he might lose control over himself due to being unfamiliar with the transformations negative psychological effects). This is again shown in the anime during the Golden Frieza Saga, when he joins Vegeta in sternly tells their sons Goten and Trunks to take Piccolo to the Lookout so not to get caught up in the fight with the revived Frieza nor did he want them to be exposed to anymore of Frieza's brutality, though he allowed the more experience and older Gohan to remain, which was likely so Gohan could witness the results of Goku's training with Whis in order to further inspire his eldest son and to remind him of the importance of training and staying strong to protect their family and loved ones. While protective of his children, Goku is not overprotective like Chi-Chi and will even encourage his sons to fight if he believes they are capable of doing so as shown when he convinced Gohan to face Cell during the Cell Games and when he decided to risk having Goten and Trunks use fusion to defeat Majin Buu despite their inexperience, though even he recognized it was gamble and only did so as he was dead at the time and wanted them to deal with the threat on their own as he didn't want them to rely on him. Additionally given his desire that his children not rely too much on him, one of the potential reasons he wanted Gohan to defeat Cell was likely due in part because he had learned of the fate of Future Gohan who had been killed by the Androids in Trunks' timeline without realizing his true potential, thus Goku likely did so that Gohan would be able to protect the Earth and not meet a similar fate as his counterpart.
Like most Saiyans, Goku loves fighting, and loves to challenge strong opponents, as such Goku rarely shows nervousness or fear when fighting - even against stronger foes, the only two exceptions being when he was faced with Golden Frieza's might, and in the anime during his all-out bout with the assassin Hit on Earth. Though he did not show it Goku also admitted to Piccolo during their fight with Raditz that he felt fearful at the prospect of facing two more powerful Saiyans than his brother, rather than his normal feelings of excitement, but this was likely due to the fact he was weaker than Raditz at that point and still had to deal with Raditz.
While not overly arrogant in his abilities (especially compared to Vegeta), Goku has a tendency to be too relaxed and recklessly challenge anyone he views as strong to a fight. At the same time, not unlike his son Gohan, Goku takes no joy in hurting people, often trying to end disputes with words and avoid killing if at all possible. These trait can lead to him letting his guard down as seen in Resurrection ‘F’, where - believing he has defeated Frieza - failed to notice Sorbet and as a result being critically injured by the minion's laser. It took both this and the destruction of Earth once again to drop his pacifist views and make the hard choice in putting Frieza down. Goku also tends to admonish Vegeta for his brutality towards villains as shown when he criticizes Vegeta for killing the Ginyu Force during the Captain Ginyu Saga and later Captain Ginyu himself during the Golden Frieza Saga in the anime, though it should be noted that this was mainly due to Vegeta killing incapacitated opponents and never giving any of them a chance to leave peacefully. While Goku loves fighting and will kill if need be, he does not condone senseless violence or brutality even if it is against an enemy. While Goku and Vegeta's rivalry may seem one-sided as Goku is generally friendly towards Vegeta and recognizes his abilities as a fighter, Goku does indeed consider Vegeta a rival as show by his reaction to learning Vegeta was training with Whis, which caused him to literally break through a wall to ask Bulma about it after overhearing her talking about it with Chi-Chi and Videl. Goku was also shown to hold a slight grudge over Vegeta training under Whis without him. While Goku and Vegeta have trouble working together due in part to their rivalry and conflicting personalities, they both respect and motivate each other to grow stronger. While Goku is friendly towards Vegeta and respects him, Goku is not above teasing or making fun of him, as shown when jokingly points out and even imitates Vegeta's reaction to Beerus slapping Bulma, though it should be noted that this is an example of Goku's carefree nature and lack of tact. Goku can also be insensitive at times to the point of ignorance, as shown by his willingness to make a promise with Elder Kai involving Bulma, without consideration for either Vegeta his wife Bulma. Vegeta himself was understandably upset when he learned of it even admonishing Goku for it, even if it was to save the Earth.
Despite being fully aware of Frieza's evil nature, Goku himself is shown to respect Frieza's strength and ability as a warrior, even suggesting that Frieza leave Namek and grow stronger once it became evident that Frieza's power was diminishing due to the strain of his 100% Final Form, letting his guard down again in the process. During the Golden Frieza Saga, after seeing the results of Frieza's training, Goku even commented on how Frieza would make a great sparring partner and considered it to be a waste of talent. In the Universe Survival Saga, he recognized Frieza's potential to be part of the team and had no problem in recruiting Frieza (despite his old foe's actions). This is further shown in Xenoverse 2, after Goku finds out the Future Warrior is training under Frieza, he admits he wishes he could train with Frieza too.
Goku has also been noted several times to have a special effect on people, being capable of inspiring them to be kinder and even causing several of his enemies to become his allies. He notably managed to aid in the redemption of Yamcha, Tien Shinhan and Vegeta (as well as Piccolo to a lesser degree), convince the God of Destruction Beerus that Earth was worth keeping around, and even cause the ruthless assassin Hit to smile in genuine happiness. Even Goku's best friend Krillin, who was a rather mischievous delinquent in the beginning, became a better person through Goku's influence.
While Goku has a strong sense of morality, he shockingly reveals to Android 17 that he has no desire to be a savior and as a Saiyan, his only goals are to fight very strong people, but states that he cannot stand seeing innocent people or animals get hurt. Also, despite his willingness to stand up and defend the Earth and its people, Goku is very simple in position, as he does not have any interest in luxury or higher ranking positions, as he rejected Kami's offer to become Guardian of Earth after defeating Piccolo. He similarly rejected Whis' offer to become the next God of Restrictions, though this was mainly because his sense of morality would make him unsuitable for the position, combined by the fact that he only wanted fighting strong enemies.
Goku speaks in the Tōhoku (東北) dialect of Japanese, specifically, a hokuetsu (北越) sub-dialect of Tōhoku. Speaking in this manner gives him what can be referred to as a "hick-dialect"; i.e. words spoken are either slurred, drawn out, or completely different words can be substituted in their place. Goku uses fairly standard grammar, but does not pronounce things in the standard manner. When referring to himself, Goku uses the pronoun ore (俺), a masculine, casual pronoun befitting his attitude. However, due to Goku's uneducated upbringing, he mispronounces ore as ora (おら) instead; this habit is carried over into other words as well. Goku tends to speak informally, though there exceptions such as Old Kai (Kaio), and King Yemma, whom he titles as sama, in the Japanese version, and also refers to Beerus by the title of "Lord" (sama), though this was mainly the result of King Kai's insistence that he address the God of Destruction respectfully to avoid upsetting him. However, Goku will speak casually to those gods he befriended who wants to be like him, such as Zen-Oh and Future Zen-Oh, going as far as Goku suggesting them refer him simply as "Goku" and not "Son Goku-san", while Goku comes up with a nickname for him, "Zen-Chan". These qualities make Goku the polar opposite of the other gods, who always fearfully respect the omni-king without question.
Abilities, techniques, and forms
Goku being a Saiyan and pushing his limits across the sky, he possesses a number of amazing abilities, most notably his Kamehameha, Instant Transmission, flight, his speed, strength, and countless others to name. Besides using his skills, he can also be seen using them for social experiments that he is failing at. Here are all of his techniques, abilities, and transformations below.
- Supernatural Capabilities - Goku is roughly on par with Vegeta. He is extremely powerful to the point that his power rivals legendarily powerful gods.
- Ki manipulation - Life energy control.
- Ki blast -- Basic form of an energy wave used throughout the DB series.
- Invisible Eye Blast -- Goku has the ability shoot an invisible eye blast of ki out of his eyes. He uses this ability twice in the anime. The first (and only time in the manga) was when he used it to dig a hole in the Namekian ground to bury Vegeta's corpse in, after he was killed by Frieza. The second was during the battle against Omega Shenron, when Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta used it to knock Omega several feet back. It is likely that this move is rather weak, as even as a Super Saiyan 4, after fusing with Vegeta, it did nothing but stagger Omega, justifying why he did not use it in any other battles.
- Able to access the Kaio-Ken. (more explained in the Power-Ups section)
- Destructo Disk -- The user holds their hand into the air, conducting ki in the form of a razor-sharp disk, which is then hurled over and around the body to cut the target.
- Kamehameha -- Goku's normal signature energy attack, even though it was invented by Master Roshi. He charges a blue-white energy wave from his hands and releases it out to damage opponent/target. He learned this technique after witnesses Roshi using it to extinguish the fire on Fire Mountain.
- Continuous Kamehameha -- Goku releases a rapid barrage of energy balls at his opponents, causing a massive accumulation of damage. This is also called the Super Energy Wave Volley.
- Solar Flare -- The user spreads and places their fingers on their foreheads, discharging a blinding flash of light.
- Homing Energy Wave -- A move where Goku fires a Ki Blast that targets his enemy. He used it against Pikkon in the episode "Final Round".
- Saiyan Aura Blast -- A yellow energy wave attack fired with one hand. Named in the Dragon Ball Z Collectible Card Game.
- Spirit Bomb -- Another of Goku's signature attacks in which he conducts the spirit energy of all nearby living organisms, forming a ball of power and size depending of the amount of harnessed ki energy.
- Dragonthrow -- Goku's signature grapple throw.
- Full-Nelson -- Executed by performing half nelsons with both arms, used on Raditz.
- Hashuu-Ken -- A technique used to counter Tien Shinhan's Four Witches Technique, in which Goku moves his two arms so fast that they each appear to be in four places at once, effectively giving him eight arms to use in combat.
- Rock, Scissors, N' Paper -- An attack in which Goku delivers either a strong punch, a poke in t he eyes, or an open palm strike.
- Tornado! -- Goku spins while rushing on the opponent to attack him/her. One of Goku's least used moves which was used against Nam.
- Afterimage Technique -- This technique is a short burst of extremely high speed, moving faster than the opponent can sense. This has the side effect of leaving a momentary "after image", until the opponent's senses adapt and realize their target has moved.
- Instant Transmission -- Also called Instantaneous Transmission. The user places their index and middle finger on their head, sensing a very far away location they can teleport to.
- Mid-Air-Stop -- While falling to the ground, Goku exhales deeply in order to keep himself suspended in the air long enough to dodge. Goku uses this technique during his battle against King Chappa in the preliminaries of the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament.
- Backbreaker -- Goku smashes his opponent's back. Used against Frieza and named in the Dragon Ball Z Collectible Card Game.
- Dragon Kick -- A powerful kick attack.
- Dragon Smash -- A rush used by Goku.
- Fusion Dance -- The two users, when sharing the same power level, perform a simultaneous and parallel dance, ending with the contact of the users' index fingers, fusing them for half an hour. Should the dance fail, the users take on a disfigured form with low physical and ki abilities. Goku performs this technique four times with Vegeta, but it is only successful twice: twice in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn, and in Dragon Ball GT while in their normal and Super Saiyan 4 forms.
- Kiai -- An invisible wave of ki emitted from the hand. Used against Chi-Chi, Goz, and later to stop Nappa's Break Cannon.
- 'Large Spirit Bomb -- Goku's second strongest Spirit Bomb. He charges up for a little while and unleashes the giant ball of energy onto the opponent. It's able to inflict accumulative massive damage.
- Super Spirit Bomb -- Goku's most powerful Spirit Bomb attack. Goku charges a humongous Spirit Bomb and transforms into a Super Saiyan in the process to strengthen the strength of the Spirit Bomb. After pushing it, this attack will completely destroy or devastate an opponent due to its massive energy in it and its size.
- Spirit Shock – A double handed Kiai used by Goku against Baby-infected Gohan and Goten in Dragon Ball GT. Named in the Dragon Ball Z Collectible Card Game.
- Ki Sense -- The ability to sense Ki energy.
- Super Saiyan power – Goku utilizes some of his Super Saiyan power in his base form. Used against the Ginyu Force in Hell.
- Telepathy -- A technique that Goku taught himself.
- Energy Barrier -- Goku used this technique in The Tree of Might.
- Mimicry – The ability to copy others' techniques after seeing them performed once. Through this, Goku copied the Kamehameha and King Chappa's Hasshu-ken technique.
- Meteor Combination -- Goku's famous multi-body-part attack, he delivers several rapid punches and kicks before punching the enemy's stomach, stunning them as Goku jumps into the air where he blasts the enemy with a Kamehameha. It was used during the fight with Piccolo. This technique is also used in Budokai Tenkaichi 3, the Raging Blast games, and Attack of the Saiyans.
- Slashdown Kick -- a dive kick. Goku dives downwards diagonally, with his foot extended.
- Super Meteor Bashing -- another Meteor-style attack. Goku kicks his opponent up into the air, hammers them back to the ground, then elbows them off to the side. It is similar to the Neo Meteor Juggle.

— Goku as a Super Saiyan towards Frieza in "Explosion of Anger".
Goku achieves this powerful transformation in the episode Explosion in Anger. After witnessing the death of his lifelong best friend, Krillin, Goku's inner rage inside him finally explodes out; transforming into the legend that was thought to be a myth. Goku's hair shoots upwards and turns to a golden-yellow color (with aura) or a white-yellow color (without aura), his gi becomes slightly brighter, his eye color becomes a turquoise-green, his muscle mass slightly increases, and has a calmly flowing, golden aura surrounding him. This multiplies a Saiyan's strength 50x fold, as the same goes for Goku.
After finally mastering the Super Saiyan form and all of its previous branches, Goku upgrades this form to Super Saiyan Full Power.
- Stats are multiplied 50x.
- Angry Kamehameha -- Another more powerful version of the Kamehameha, instead of the traditional blue color, the Kamehameha turns into a yellow-white color. The charge takes some time but not too much, firing his big wave onto the opponent to cause accumulative massive damage.
- Instant Kamehameha -- Goku charges a normal Kamehameha and then teleports directly in front of the opponent at fires it at them point blank.
- Instant Spirit Bomb -- Goku performs a Spirit Bomb and throws it towards the opponent, then uses Instant Transmission to appear in front of the opponent and hit them in the face with a Blast Fist uppercut before teleporting away, leaving the Spirit Bomb to finish them off.
- Suspended Blast -- Goku never uses this attack, but it's only used to scare off or threaten a target. He lifts either his right or left arm and charges a blue ball in his hands. This was also used to threaten Supreme Kai so he could battle Majin Vegeta.
- Super Dragon Fist -- A combination of the Spirit Bomb and Dragon Fist used by Goku in his various Super Saiyan forms. Goku creates a Spirit Bomb and absorbs it before throwing a powerful punch filled with the Spirit Bomb's energy. Used to kill Super Android 13 in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13!. In video games, Goku uses a Spirit Bomb-powered Dragon Fist instead of a regular punch.
- Now I'm Really Mad! -- A rush attack where Goku punches the opponent away with a left hook and knocks them to the ground with a double axe handle. Used against Frieza shortly after transforming into a Super Saiyan, and named in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z.

— Goku in Super Saiyan 3?!
After witnessing his son Gohan transform into a Super Saiyan 2 for the first time, Goku wished to achieve this form and successfully managed to do so with intense training at Kami's Lookout. He uses this form to fight off against Majin Vegeta and to show Babidi and Majin Buu the Super Saiyan forms, and briefly using it against Kid Buu to warm himself up while Kid Buu was compressing his power. He then used it against the Universe 7 God of Destruction Beerus at Kami's Lookout with his attendant Whis, and showed him the Super Saiyan forms he possessed at the time, going from Super Saiyan to Super Saiyan 3--in which all were no match for Beerus.
In the Future Trunks Saga, Goku later uses Super Saiyan 2 against Future Trunks, using the form to test his power but later be surprised he can also transform into a Super Saiyan 2, as the two were fairly equal. He then later used it once more against Zamasu during their first encounter to test their power, as while Goku was holding back, he was still superior to Zamasu and won the brief sparring match.
Goku accessed Super Saiyan 2 once more against Goku Black during their brief sparring match, as Black became roughly equal with Goku in that form. In the Universe Survival Saga, Goku uses Super Saiyan 2 against Ultimate Gohan to test his power. The two were roughly equal with each other before he briefly battled with him in Super Saiyan Blue, and one-shot him in Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken.
After Caulifla requests to fight Goku, Goku goes from Super Saiyan to Super Saiyan 2 against her as Caulifla also goes Super Saiyan, then Super Saiyan Third Grade, and finally Super Saiyan 2. The two remained equal for most of their fight, although Goku was holding back, and had a slight edge as his trained form was much stronger than Caulifla's Super Saiyan 2.
After Kale transforms into her Berserk Super Saiyan form, she goes on a rampage against Goku and Goku remains in his Super Saiyan 2 form. The form proved almost absolutely ineffective against Kale, prompting him to turn Super Saiyan Blue and fire a heavily suppressed God Kamehameha that Kale easily walked through.
When Jiren and Goku finally fight, he goes from Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, God, and Blue (and later Kaio-ken) against Jiren to see how strong he is, in which all of the forms proved ineffective against him. Super Saiyan 2 dealt absolutely no damage to Jiren.
Goku's hair becomes very slightly longer, and three bangs reside at his forehead. His hair also becomes spikier and less smooth. His aura is also more flame-like and jagged, while also gaining bright blue bio-electricity that surges around him.
- Able to access abilities and techniques from previous forms, all multiplied once more.
- Stats are multiplied 100x.
- Meteor Blast -- A rush attack used by Super Saiyan 2 Goku against Kid Buu in the anime, as well as in the Raging Blast games.
- Meteor Crash -- In his Super Saiyan 2 form, Goku charges at the opponent and side kicks them up into the air. Then, he flies up and roundhouse punches the opponent away before flying and reappearing behind them to elbow them in the stomach as they turn around. Finally, Goku attacks the opponent with a punching and kicking barrage and kicks them up into the air before kneeing them in their back and Double Axe Handle punching them down to the ground, inflicting a high amount of damage.
|“||I'm sorry that took so much longer than the others, heh, but I haven't had much occasion to practice this one. This is what I call a Super Saiyan 3.||„|
— Super Saiyan 3 Goku presenting his form to Babidi and Majin Buu.
After being knocked out cold by Majin Vegeta, Goku went up to Kame's Lookout to prepare for Majin Buu. In that time, he went through several years of training for obtaining the final Super Saiyan form in Dragon Ball Z. This is a Super Saiyan 3.
Goku's hair becomes thick and smooth again, but lengthens all the way to to his bottom. A single bang resides at his forehead that hangs down. His muscle mass increases slightly as his muscles are slightly more defined. His hair is even more golden, and he loses his eyebrows and his green-turquoise eyes become sterner. His aura is now oval-shaped and is almost static due to the massive energy output of the form. The bio-electricity from Super Saiyan 2 stays but is much more frequent.
- Access to past abilities and techniques from previous forms, all multiplied once more.
- Stats are multiplied 400x.
- True Kamehameha -- Goku's most powerful Kamehameha attack in this form. He charges a yellow-blue-and-electric Kamehameha in his hands, then releases the giant wave upon an opponent, causing incredible damage.
- Meteor Impact -- As he says "Let's get this started!", Goku double kicks the opponent up into the air. Then, he rushes high into the air behind the opponent to double axe-handle punch and hook kick them down to the ground. Finally, Goku bends down and puts his hand over the opponent's face to blast them with a one-handed Kamehameha, inflicting a great deal of damage.
- Dragon Fist -- Goku delivers a punch that causes an explosion, summoning a golden dragon to either wrap around the enemy and disintegrate with him, or devour them. This technique was first used in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon, and is the only one of Goku's techniques that he invented entirely on his own.
|“||"Long ago, a small group of pure-hearted Saiyans pooled their powers together to create a savior... A Super Saiyan God!"||„|
— Shenron - Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods
Goku achieves this form in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods from gaining the inner power from his Human/Saiyan family and his Saiyan-in-blood brothers. He looks similar to his base form, with minor differences: His hair color turns to a violet-red color, and his hair slightly sticks up, but flows slightly when surrounded in aura. His eye color changes from black to a black-red/violet-red color as well, and his orange gi now changes to a sunrise bright orange color. Goku also possesses a divine, truly flaming aura around his body. Goku's skin color has also changed from a pale beige to a violet-beige. Goku's muscle mass on his entire body also turns to a slightly more skinny appearance.
Goku uses this form in Battle of Gods against Beerus, again in Dragon Ball Super in the Beerus Saga, and two times in the manga against Hit and Future Trunks.
In the anime, Super Saiyan God finally makes a comeback when Hit is having difficulty fighting Dyspo and fending off his immense lightspeeds. Goku switches from Super Saiyan Blue and God to defend himself in God, while attacking as Blue.
- Is immune to damage from mortals that utilize regular ki. However, he can be affected by god ki, and can be affected by regular ki if the ki is efficient enough to hurt gods.
- Stats are multiplied far beyond his ordinary Super Saiyan forms.
- Time limit of the Super Saiyan God form is mastered; unlimited time usage.
- Presence cannot be sensed by mortals who do not possess godly powers.
- Uses godly ki.
- Access to past abilities from past forms; all multiplied
- Kamehameha Rebirth -- First, Goku either lifts his hands joined together in the air or joins his hands to his side. Then, he charges the attack with his hands drawn his side, like a regular Kamehameha. Finally, he fires the attack towards his opponent in the form of a blue energy wave, inflicting countless amounts of incredible damage.
- Can You Follow Me? -- In his Super Saiyan God form, Goku teleports in front of the opponent and delivers several high-speed punches and kicks. Named in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z.
|“||Frieza: So, what is this? Super Saiyan with blue hair dye?||„|
— Frieza humourlessly questioning the Super Saiyan Blue form.
Goku first achieves the Super Saiyan Blue form after completely mastering the use of the Super Saiyan God form and implementing that power into his Super Saiyan form: allowing his Super Saiyan transformation to ascend into god level. Used against Golden Frieza, the form was ultimately weaker than the Ultimate Evolution despite its extremely powerful heights. However, due to Goku and Vegeta's long-time experience with the form, this form lasted longer and was proven stronger in terms of stamina usage.
Goku also uses this form several times along with Vegeta against Goku Black and Future Zamasu. However, Super Saiyan Blue is ultimately inferior to the stronger Super Saiyan Rose.
Goku utilizes this form again immediately when he begins his battle against Arale Norimaki, which also impresses the Android. Goku and Vegeta used this form again during Universe 6 and Universe 7's baseball match, and later when Goku fights Hit, who attempts to assassinate him, and proved to be quite a match for this form, thanks to fighting at his very best using killing techniques, with Goku unable to hit the assassin at all, because he was hiding in his Time Storage parallel world while he attacks the Saiyan using his deadly Invisible ki blasts, and attacking him by surprise once briefly bursting out of his Time Storage parallel world, the fight ultimately ended in a stalemate when Super Saiyan Blue Goku unleashes a massive aura burst, and then destroys Hit's Time Storage world without the need to use Kaio-Ken, then launches a full-power God Kamehameha at Hit, with the assassin trying to hold his own against Goku's massive assault, and Vegeta during his training with Whis on Beerus' planet in preparation for the multi-universal tournament.
Goku once again transforms during his match against the giant Bergamo during the Zen Exhibition Match, to the shock and awe of all the deities seeing him transform, with Khai feeling and stating the form's godly pressure, and Roh labeling Goku's power in this form as "power rivaling that of gods", Future Zen-Oh called Goku amazing upon seeing him transform, with the present Zen-Oh telling him that it is called Super Saiyan Blue (he apparently recognized and oversaw Goku's usage and naming of the form back at the Universe 6 and 7 tournament from a distance), stating that it is not enough and that Bergamo needs extra power, Goku powers up to the Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken state, which gave him a massive power boost, and defeats the wolf after a brief beam struggle between his Wolfgang Penetrator and a 10x God Kamehameha.
Later, during his battle against the Pride Trooper Toppo, Goku transformed once again into a Super Saiyan Blue to escape the Pride Trooper's crushing hold, and then proceeds to briefly outmatch him using his form's godly speed, but Toppo defends himself and puts up quite a better fight against Goku's godly ki surrounded form, both fighters clashing at intense speed, sending shockwaves that destroy anything around the battlefield, with Goku getting a slight advantage in the fight, later, he unleashes a God Kamehameha at the Pride Trooper, while he retaliated with his Justice Flash technique, Goku then uses his Instant Transmission and gets closer to Toppo, firing the Kamehameha afterwards, Toppo blocks it, causing a massive explosion, but the Pride Trooper sturdily survived, with the cost of a hole on the shoulder part of his suit, much to his anger, an enraged Toppo unleashes his aura, and Goku uses the Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken technique once more, and the two warriors attempt to "pass their limits", before they do so, the fight was stopped by the Great Priest, and Goku reverts to his base form shortly after. Later, an irritated Vegeta later goes Super Saiyan Blue twice upon hearing Mr. Satan and Yamcha clumsily cuddling Bulla, which causes her to cry, much to the others' confusion. Later that day, Goku transforms into Super Saiyan Blue during his sparring session with Krillin at the top of Satan Building in an effort to test his true might, with Krillin feeling Goku's godly pressure, and Android 18 and Gohan noticing a large gap in their powers. Krillin charges his Kamehameha while Goku charges his sightly larger God Kamehameha, both fighters fire their beams, and a Beam Struggle is initiated, while Android 18, Marron, and Gohan watch, as Goku slowly gains the upper hand during the beam clash. Struggling, Krillin tries to hold out his own with his own beam until the struggle is stopped when Android 18 rushes in and kicks Goku's God Kamehameha away. Krillin is knocked aback, twitching as if it is like an electric shock, when both husband and wife decided to fight as a team against him, but to their surprise, Goku reverts to his base form, exclaiming that the match is enough and that he learned a lot from them. Goku then used this form against Android 17 in their sparring session. Although neither fighters were fighting at full power, they were mainly at par with each other.
He briefly uses this form against Gohan out of respect for his son after Gohan demands him to use his full power. Goku atones to his level, trading blows with him before advancing to Kaio-ken.
Goku's hair stands completely up again, very identical to his Super Saiyan form's hair, only that one of the bangs protrudes right than left--possibly an inheritance of the Super Saiyan God form's hair style. Goku's hair gains a light blue color, and his muscle mass is slightly increased again, exactly like the Super Saiyan form's muscle mass. His eyes are also the same color of his hair. Furthermore, Goku's aura is composed of several colors but is truly a double aura. He has a godly aura with multiple colors of blue that flow inside, while direct contact of his body is surrounded with a slight green, sea-like glow. Sometimes, small pure white bio-electricity surges around him. The aura is outlined with a white small glow, while with another, a subtle gold glow that is possibly from the standard Super Saiyan form. Strange energy that looks like dense, cooling air also surrounds his body.
- Is immune to damage from mortals that utilize regular ki. However, he can be affected by god ki, and can be affected by regular ki if the ki is efficient enough to hurt him.
- Presence cannot be sensed by mortals who do not possess godly powers.
- Uses godly ki.
- Stats are multiplied far beyond that of Super Saiyan God.
- Access to previous abilities and techniques, all of them multiplied
- God Kamehameha -- Goku's most powerful Kamehameha up to date. Goku charges a lighter blue Kamehameha in his hands and releases the incredibly large wave upon an opponent. This technique can cause massive ton of damage, stronger than the Kamehameha Rebirth.
- One-inch punch -- A close range punching technique. Used by Goku against Golden Frieza in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’
|“||I see, that technique... but, for a mortal like Goku, not even a god can easily attain that power.||„|
— Khai's amazement at Goku's Ultra Instinct.
Goku achieved the legendary power of Ultra Instinct in his ultimate battle against Jiren, the strongest Pride Trooper and warrior in his universe who's power equaled, or even surpassed a God of Destruction.
As assumed by Whis and well-known among Gods of Destruction and even all gods, Ultra Instinct is a state of being where the user masters Self-Movement, the ability to avoid any attack without acknowledging its existence and apparently receiving an immense boost in power. This form is well known to both Angels and Gods of Destruction. Seemingly, the Mastery of Self-Movement is infamous among Gods of Destruction seeing that it is a trait that even they cannot easily perfect. The Angels as well were very astonished and puzzled as to how a mortal such as Goku was able to achieve it.
Goku unintentionally achieved this form when Jiren compressed his own Spirit Bomb, in which by the moment it was compressed, Goku naturally stopped his struggle due to being overwhelmingly exhausted from struggle and falling into the compressed Spirit Bomb. As he fell and seemingly received all of the damage and was assumed to be utterly vaporized by the attack--Goku's own willpower collided with his own Spirit Bomb in which they merged, forming Goku's deepest part of his bottomless potential. Piccolo noted that while in this form Goku's body is becoming more and more powerful, saying that Goku is evolving.
Because the form also granted Goku complete mastery over Self-Movement, he was evenly matched with Jiren and received absolutely no damage to him, and actually managed to deal a blow. However, the Spirit Bomb's energy sustaining the form ran out, prompting Goku out of the form and being defeated by Jiren. Although he wasn't knocked off the stage, simply replenishing his energy for an assumed rematch.
In this form, Goku's hair remains black and spikes up somewhat, while his muscle mass is increased and heavily defined. Goku's eyes brighten to a shining silver and take on a stern and defined shape, while his body is outlined in the Ultra Instinct's unknown, unique complex blue aura, possessing silver sparks. Some of Goku's hair is also heavily illuminated by the aura's light, appearing as a bright silvery-white.
Goku's voice also gains a second, faint demonic tone, another interesting quality of the form. His ki is extremely warm but "frighteningly calm". Ultra Instinct potentially makes Goku surpass all the Gods of Destruction present in the tournament.
- Stats are multiplied (extent unknown).
- Access to previous abilities and techniques, all of them multiplied.
- Self-Movement Mastery - In Ultra Instinct, Goku can avoid any attack feasible without having to acknowledge their existence. It can be guessed that this technique does not work against beings faster than him, a natural flaw of Self-Movement.
- Perfect Ki Manipulation - Goku has perfect control over ki.
- Perfect Energy Manipulation - Goku has perfect control over energy.
- Growth - As stated by Piccolo, Goku's body in Ultra Instinct constantly becomes more and more powerful at a dangerously fast rate.
Power Up Forms
Goku possesses a number of power up forms he has used multiple times in the Dragon Ball series. All of them used to fight many powerful foes to gain a better advantage from, and even one of them consisting of his Super Saiyan transformations. Here are all of his power up forms below.
|“||"Oh... it's the Kaioken attack. It's like a massive upsurge of energy. Everything is heightened: power, speed, even hearing and vision improve dramatically. You sort of become a super-self. But it can only be sustained for a short time, so you have to get the job done quickly."||„|
— Goku in "Lesson Number One"
The Kaio-Ken is a massive stat power boost created by King Kai in which the user has enhanced strength, speed and stamina and is solely made for using it against opponents stronger than the user. However, the only known user to successfully use the Kaio-Ken throughout the series has only been Goku. He now possesses a violet/red aura and his hair becomes a violet black with pink outlines, and his entire gi becomes engulfed in a raging red color.
- Stats are doubled.
- Kaio-Ken Kamehameha X1 -- While in his Kaio-Ken X1 form, Goku charges a giant blue Kamehameha and fires it upon an opponent.
Goku's Kaio-Ken X2 form. He gains an additional power boost to all of his stats, further increasing his ability to attempt to attack an opponent.
- Stats are doubled.
- Kaio-Ken Kamehameha X2 -- Goku fires a stronger blue Kaio-Ken Kamehameha wave.
Goku uses the Kaio-Ken X3 against Vegeta in the Saiyan saga when his previous Kaio-ken forms aren't working much against him. This puts another boost to Goku's stats.
- Stats are tripled.
- Kaio-Ken Kamehameha X3 -- Goku uses this technique against Vegeta when he fires his Gallick Gun.
|“||KAIO-KEN TIMES FOOOOOOOUR!!!||„|
— Goku using Kaio-ken X4 against Vegeta in the Galick Gun-Kamehameha collision.
Goku uses this version of the Kaio-ken to boost his Kaio-Ken Kamehameha against Vegeta when he boosts his Gallick Gun. This causes an even greater boost to all of Goku's stats.
- Stats are quadrupled.
- Kaio-Ken Kamehameha X4 -- Goku uses this Kaio-ken Kamehameha against Vegeta as a powerful boost to his energy wave against Vegeta.
Goku skips all 15 forms of the Kaio-ken and goes to Kaio-Ken X20. He uses this upgrade against Frieza in his final form.
- Stats are multiplied 20x.
- Kaio-Ken Kamehameha X20 -- Goku's X20 Kaio-Ken Kamehameha. He charges a blue Kamehameha and his hands and fires the explosive beam at the opponent.
— Goku using Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-Ken against Bergamo.
The Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken is the result of Goku transforming into a Super Saiyan Blue and then stacking Kaio-ken on top of it, or vice versa, or simply transforming into the power-up simultaneously. It was made to increase the absolute limits of Super Saiyan Blue.
The Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-Ken was first seen used against Hit in the Universal Tournament. Knowing that Hit's moves were getting too strong for him, he was forced to use his Kaio-Ken, and even increase it 10x fold from his starter Kaio-Ken. This variation of the Kaio-ken boasts a double aura effect, placing a crimson Kaio-ken aura outside of a typical blue Super Saiyan Blue aura. The outer Kaio-ken aura manifests as violently fluctuating and jagged while the Super Saiyan Blue aura maintains a gentle, flame-like contour. Like the regular Kaio-ken, the aura is always constant and will not dissipate.
Goku began developing this technique for eventual use against Beerus. To use it, Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan Blue, then simply activates Kaio-ken in addition to it. As Goku has not yet mastered the technique, it has only a 10% chance of working and a 90% of failing, which had a chance of killing him. Thus, Goku must maintain an extraordinary amount of focus when activating the technique in order to ensure its success. Since Super Saiyan Blue has perfect innate ki control, Goku is able to utilize the power of the Kaio-ken in a similar manner to the way in which he can control it in his base form. By contrast, attempting to use the technique with his normal Super Saiyan transformation would almost certainly kill him, which he cited as the reason why he never attempted to use it in the past as a normal Super Saiyan. Use of this technique gifted Goku with such power that Hit's Time-Skip technique became ineffective, as Goku became so powerful while using it that he was able to strike Hit in spite of time being suspended. This form was even able to make Beerus nervous even before Goku increased its multiplier.
Goku briefly uses this technique once again in the "Future" Trunks Saga, in order to escape Fused Zamasu's grasp and send him flying with a swift kick. In the process, Goku manages to destroy Fusion Zamasu's Barrier of Light, but quickly returns to base form, unable to move.
Goku uses this technique a third time during the Zen Exhibition Match in his match against Bergamo, who was getting stronger with each blow Goku delivered until defeated by Goku's God Kamehameha. At this point, it appears that Goku was able to exercise a far greater degree of control with this form, as he did not succumb to any muscle spasms or contractions afterwards, but this could be because he didn't use the ten fold Kaioken as he did with Hit. He later uses this technique against Toppo before being stopped by Great Priest.
Goku later used this in a one-on-one match against a full power Potential Unleashed Gohan in preparation for the Tournament of Power, who was equal to a Saiyan beyond God-enhanced Super Saiyan 2 Goku. Out of respect, Goku transformed into Super Saiyan Blue after his son demanded him to, atoning to Gohan's level as they traded blows to which Gohan still demanded to use his full power. Prompting him to this, when Goku used Kaio-ken, he knocked Gohan out in just one punch.
- Same techniques and abilities from Super Saiyan Blue form multiplied.
|“||KAIO-KEN TIMES TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN!!!!||„|
— Goku using the X10 variant of Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken against Hit.
Goku attempts to use the x10 enhancement but after attempting to defeat Hit with it, the ten times Kaio-ken seemingly faded and his Kaio-ken dropped to a lower level for the rest of the fight. Boosting his power level by a ten times multiplier, Goku's abilities as a Super Saiyan Blue are boosted by ten times. He used this a second time while he was struggling against the Spirit Bomb with Jiren able to push it back with relative ease, going from regular Kaioken to X10, then X20.
- Stats are multiplied.
- Same techniques and abilities from Super Saiyan Blue form multiplied.
|“||KAIO-KEN TIMES TWENTYYYYY!!!!||„|
— Goku powering up to the maximum level of Kaio-ken with Super Saiyan Blue against the Spirit Bomb struggle with Jiren.
Prior to their fated battle, Goku was capable of maximizing Super Saiyan Blue's absolute power with the help of the Kaio-ken once more, raising it up to a times twenty amount. As such, X20 Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken increases Goku's abilities as Super Saiyan Blue twenty times their amount, and was formerly Goku's absolute limit.
He used this power-up in short bursts several times against Jiren, although it proved absolutely no match for him, receiving ultimately no damage. He also powered himself up from regular Kaio-ken to X20 in the Spirit Bomb struggle, in which Goku's true power was shown--which was unfortunately trumped by Jiren, who was far stronger than Goku's absolute limit.
- Stats are multiplied.
- Same techniques and abilities from Super Saiyan Blue form multiplied.
Fusion Forms and Transformations
Along with his power up and transformation forms, Goku also contains immensely powerful fusion forms that form him between himself and Vegeta. Some of the transformations of the fusion forms are strong to the point where they have the strength of Goku's Super Saiyan God or Super Saiyan Blue level (without the immunity's and divine/godly ki requirements, of course), further proving that these fusions are incredibly powerful. Here are all of Goku's fusion forms below.
|“||I am not Goku nor Vegeta! It's over Janemba, I've come for you!||„|
— Super Gogeta towards Super Janemba in Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn.
|“||Every force you create has an echo. Your own bad energy will be your undoing.||„|
— Gogeta's words before he executes Super Janemba.
Gogeta (ゴジータ) (or Super Gogeta) is the product of the Fusion Dance between Goku and Vegeta, two highly powerful Saiyans as the form so far has only appeared once in the anime movie Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn. His voice is a dual voice that contains both Goku's and Vegeta's. Gogeta is famous for his amazing power and speed, and is regarded as one of the most powerful characters in the Dragon Ball franchise. Gogeta also wears the same clothes that all creations of the Fusion Dance wear, though Gogeta's vest has a different color scheme than Gotenks': the padding around the neck and shoulders of the vest is reddish orange rather than yellow, and the vest is black rather than the dark blue vest Gotenks wears. His hair is very similar to Vegito's, with the only differences being that Gogeta only has one free hanging lock of hair instead of two and Gogeta having Vegeta's widow's peak. Gogeta also acquires Goku's peach like skin rather than adopt Vegeta's more mild tan. Gogeta possesses Goku's body structure as he is tall and slender, but he seems to mostly possess Vegeta's facial features. Gogeta is also stronger than a Super Saiyan 3.
- Stats are multiplied from both fusees and the combined Super Saiyan forms.
- Has access to all abilities and techniques from Goku's base and Super Saiyan forms, along with Vegeta's base and Super Saiyan forms, all multiplied.
- Stardust Breaker -- Super Gogeta's ultimate attack. Gogeta attacks the opponent with a powerful and quick barrage of punches in their stomach. Then, he flies past the stunned opponent and turns around to knee them twice in the back of their head/neck before backflip kicking them away. Next, he lands on the ground and raises his left hand to charge a rainbow energy sphere. Finally, Gogeta turns around and throws the energy sphere, which has a delayed effect around 5 seconds, but finally disintegrates the opponent from the inside.
|“||"What do you call a Vegeta and a Goku? Vegito sounds alright."||„|
— — "Meet Vegito"
Vegito (ベジット, Bejitto; "Vegetto") is the immensely powerful result of the fusion between Goku and Vegeta by the use of the Potara Earrings. His voice is a dual voice that contains both Goku's and Vegeta's voices. Vegito is regarded most for his immense power and speed, and is the most powerful character in the Dragon Ball manga. He is about the same height as Goku, while his hair is more inclined toward Vegeta; it firmly stands upwards and is very dark brown in color, however, he has two bangs sticking out like a downward "V" shape, a trait caught from Goku. When he transforms into a Super Saiyan, he looks almost exactly like Goku. Vegito wears two earrings as result from the Potara fusion, and wears an inverted version of Goku's gi with the colors of the gi and undershirt reversed. The inversion is caused by adopting the color of Vegeta's outfit for the external wear, and using the orange of Goku's gi for the undershirt. Finally, he wears white gloves and boots in the same style as Vegeta.
Vegito is likely the strongest character in the entirety of Dragon Ball Z. In his base form, he is stronger than a Super Saiyan 3. He could likely kill Super Buu without trying, although in his base form he would likely have to try to a small extent, as his Super Saiyan form was many times superior to his base form.
- Able to access both abilities and techniques from Goku and Vegeta in their base forms.
- Stats multiplied from both fusees.
- Complete Shot -- Vegito punches the opponent twice and uppercuts their chin before kicking them away. He then dashes after them to knock the opponent away with a punch and kick to their side. Vegito used this attack to batter around Super Buu, though the monster regenerated from the damage he received. This attack was named in Dragon Ball: Raging Blast and is one of Vegito's Super Attacks.
- Savage Counter -- Vegito folds his arms and stands on one foot, holding his chin up to his opponent, saying "Hey how's that?" If the opponent hits in time, there is a pause in everything except time and camera movement, Vegito saying "Not fun!" Then, Vegito counters with a savage volley of kicks, then he finishes by kicking them away, saying "Take this!" It appears as his Signature Attack in Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2.
|“||"Call me Super Vegito!"||„|
— — "Meet Vegito"
The product of Vegito transforming into a Super Saiyan. This transformation was used as a boost against Super Buu who had absorbed Ultimate Gohan, Piccolo, and Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks so he wouldn't be slightly powerful/equal to him, and become much more powerful to toy around with and finish him. He gains his Super Saiyan style in terms of appearance with the golden aura around him and his hair becoming a golden-orange-yellow color, and his muscle mass has increased, similar to the Ascended Super Saiyan/2nd Grade Super Saiyan's muscle mass.
Vegito as a Super Saiyan is many times stronger than a Super Saiyan 3. It's said that Vegito (although it's not specifically said that it's his base form, or Super Saiyan form, though likely in the latter) would be able to kill Super Buu within ease, without even trying as well. This was proven by his performance against him in Dragon Ball Z. It's also said that he could easily kill Kid Buu as well, without trying, as he would finish him more easily than Super Saiyan 3 Goku could if he had actually tried to kill him.
- Abilities and techniques from both Goku and Vegeta's base and Super Saiyan forms and able to use abilities/techniques from base form.
- Stats are multiplied from both fusees and the combined Super Saiyan forms.
- Perfect Game -- A counter rush attack used by Vegito in his Super Saiyan form. Before the opponent attacks him, Vegito says "Hey, what's the matter?" as he punches the opponent in the stomach. Then, he punches the opponent in the face and spins around to knock them away with a roundhouse kick to their back. Finally, Vegito puts his hand forward and fires a large golden-yellow energy wave at the opponent, inflicting a massive amount of damage.
- Banshee Blast -- Vegito reaches out with his right hand, body hunched over somewhat with all five of his fingers pointed at his opponent. In Dragon Ball fashion, he calls out the name of this attack while charging up five small yellow orbs of energy, one at the tip of each finger on his right hand. After doing so, he launches the potent orbs at his opponent. As Super Buu had sent a wave of Kamikaze Ghosts, Vegito used this attack to destroy them before they could do any amount of damage. In the Budokai Tenkaichi video game series, this technique is called the Scatter Finger Beam (it is more noticeable in Tenkaichi 3 as a charged ki attack).
- Final Kamehameha -- This is one of or perhaps even the strongest attack that Vegito possesses This attack is a combination blend of the Final Flash attack and the Super Kamehameha. Vegito puts both of his hands in front of him, combining the energy of the Final Flash and the Super Kamehameha into a compact whitish blue sphere. The ball is surrounded by a blue aura with occasional streaks of blue electricity and is about the size of Vegito himself. Vegito fires off the ball, which creates a gigantic explosion on contact and leaves a huge cloud of smoke behind. The charge-up and hand positions are a bit different in the video games, where Vegito charges it like a Final Flash and fires it like the Kamehameha.
- Spirit Canon -- Very similar to Spirit Sword, except the energy does not fan out like a sword. Vegito points towards his target, while preparing for the attack. It charges up, and then blasts whatever the target was. Vegito performed this attack on Super Buu, but he managed to regenerate. It has a slightly different effect in the Budokai video game series, with Vegito extending his hand towards the enemy, becoming surrounded by yellow energy and releasing a powerful yellow energy blast, instead of a constant beam of energy.
- Spirit Sword -- A blade created from pure condensed ki around the right hand and formed into a sword-like object. It is usually roughly around twenty feet in length, and yet can be controlled to become longer or shorter, at Vegito's will. The cutting power of the blade cannot truly be measured very accurately, but using the attacks upon Super Buu as a gauge, it seems that this sword has incredible strength. Because this sword is created by a single usage of ki, and can continue to be used without dying out like a projectile, this could be considered one of Vegito's most devastating attacks. In the manga, he is never seen dealing significant damage to Super Buu, but instead toys with him, taunting him while he is still sticking the sword into Super Buu. This move is available to Vegito in several video games, like the Budokai and Budokai Tenkaichi series, where it is called the Spirit Sword and Beam Sword Slash, respectively. In the video game Supersonic Warriors 2, Goku and Vegeta have a team attack which allows them to become Vegito momentarily, who then uses this attack, labeled Super Bajit Sword, on the enemy.
- Saiyan shield -- Vegito used this technique to put up a barrier around his body to avoid being turned into "buu goo" by Super Buu when he was absorbed by him. Named in Dragon Ball: Raging Blast.
|“||And this is... Vegito, BLUE!!||„|
— -Vegito, titling his Super Saiyan Blue transformation.
|“||Hmph. Sorry. You were way open there. C'mon, mister god. I'm through listenin' to your quibbling. Hurry up and try to squash me.||„|
— -Vegito Blue, after swiftly punching Fusion Zamasu during his speech
In Dragon Ball Super, as a last effort to finally defeat Fusion Zamasu, Goku and Vegeta are given the option to fuse with the Potara Earrings, and do so, instantly transforming into Super Saiyan Blue as Vegito Blue. Vegito Blue is used as a last effort assault against Fusion Zamasu.
In the anime, Vegito Blue is comparable to Fusion Zamasu, due to Fusion Zamasu being in his Super Saiyan Rose state, which allows Fusion Zamasu to become stronger each time he is damaged. In the manga however, even with how strong Fusion Zamasu is from Goku Black, Blue Vegito is easily capable of overpowering him without trying and even removes body parts of him. He toys with him through the whole way, until he takes the situation seriously and prepares a full-power Final Kamehameha, until he instantly defuses into a base form Goku and Vegeta.
- Stats are multiplied from both fusees and their combined Super Saiyan Blue forms.
- Has access to all abilities Goku and Vegeta possess, and they are all multiplied.
- Has access to previous abilities in previous forms.
- Is immune to damage from mortals that utilize regular ki. However, he can be affected by god ki, and can be affected by regular ki if the ki is efficient enough to hurt gods (although, due to how strong he is in this form, this has never been shown to confirm to Vegito Blue).
- Presence cannot be sensed by mortals.
- Uses godly ki.
These are forms Goku still has access to but no longer uses.
|“||"It's time for me to move to the next level. Vegeta knows it, too. Through my dreams, I could hear him speaking what I had also felt, that there is a level beyond that of a Super Saiyan... And I will rise to claim it."||„|
— Goku ("Our Hero Awakes")
Goku achieves this form through intense training with his son Gohan in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. His upward-style hair becomes slightly more raggedy and bigger, and he gains big-muscle mass. This is one of Goku's least used transformations.
- Stats are multiplied.
- Strength gains a massive increase.
- Speed gains a massive increase.
|“||"I know I look like I can, Gohan, but these bulky muscles make it hard to move fast, and if I'm going to beat Cell, I can't have anything slowing me down. I may have great power, but what good is it if I can't catch my enemy? It takes more than brute strength to win a fight."||„|
— Goku ("The Cell Games")
Goku achieves this form training through more days in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. His hair becomes more raggedy and bigger and he gains much more muscle mass. Goku never uses this form again after the Cell saga.
- Strength and endurance are multiplied.
- Speed is decreased greatly.
This form is a combination between the Super Saiyan form and the Kaio-ken power-up. Goku uses this form against Pikkon at the Other World Stadium. Because it was claimed that Goku could only use this technique because he was dead, it would be an absolute guarantee of death if he would use it while alive, and so he discarded this.
- Stats are multiplied.
- Super Kaio-ken Kamehameha -- The Super Kamehameha and the Kaio-ken Kamehameha mixed together.
These are forms Goku formerly possessed but no longer has access to.
Goku's Great Ape form. This can be activated if Goku has a tail and looks up at the full moon, causing him to transform and or it was activated when he was a child. Goku can no longer use this form due to his tail being cut off.
- Stands at about 20m.
- Cannot fly.
- Is much slower.
- Cannot use his techniques.
- Strength massively increases.
- Able to shoot fire breath or energy beams/rays out of his mouth.
- Loud roaring can stun foes for about 30 seconds.
|“||"Wow, my gosh! What a change! This has never happened before...huh, wait, it's the legend! Goku must have transformed into a Super Saiyan!"||„|
— King Kai (Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug)
This is Goku's Psuedo Super Saiyan transformation. Red outlines appear in his hair and his hair style turns upwards, he loses the irises in his eyes, he develops a yellowish-gold aura and his body (except clothes) become engulfed in the same color. This form was activated when fighting Lord Slug. It's not stated if Goku can still use this form, but he has not used this form since when he used it against Lord Slug. It is most likely that he cannot use the form, due to the proper mental urge and status achieved in order to transform into a Super Saiyan.
- Stats are multiplied.

- In the original Japanese anime, Goku is voiced by the same voice actress throughout the series' run, Masako Nozawa. Additionally, Nozawa voices every biological male relative of Goku, with the exception of Raditz. In the FUNimation dub, he has been played by four actors: three as a child (one for the entire main series, and two others for miscellaneous projects) and only one for adult Goku. In the various Ocean/Blue Water dubs, eight actors have played him: three as a child, and five as an adult at various points of various different projects. In the Filipino dub, he was played by one actor. Goku is voiced by Jefferson Utanes in the Tagalog, Hiligaynon, and Cebuano dubs.
- Despite being the main character, Goku has only officially won one World Martial Arts Tournament, and that was the 23rd against Piccolo. In all others, he either loses (to Jackie Chun and Tien Shinhan), or quits (due to the threat of Majin Buu, as well as later to train Uub). During Dragon Ball GT, he fights in the Jr. Division due to his child body, and loses when his competitor tickled him, causing him to fall out of the ring. Even in the Other World Tournament, the match ends in a draw because both Goku and Pikkon had touch the ceiling during their fight, which was technically a ring-out. He also loses the Cell Games when he forfeits.
- Goku has shown an act of mercy to every major manga villain he battles from Piccolo onward. These acts of mercy include:
- Giving Piccolo a Senzu Bean after narrowly defeating him in the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament
- Letting Raditz's tail go when holding him in place for Piccolo's attack
- Giving Nappa a chance to leave Earth after defeating him
- Pleading with Krillin to keep him from killing Vegeta with Yajirobe's samurai sword
- Merely wounding Recoome and Burter, giving them a chance to recover
- Telling Vegeta not to kill Captain Ginyu after he turns into a frog
- Giving Frieza some energy so he could flee Namek before it explodes
- Giving Cell a Senzu Bean before letting Gohan fight in his place to guarantee that Cell would be fighting at his fullest
- Telling Dende to heal Majin Buu and using the Dragon Balls to make sure that the majority of Earth's population would forget about the evil things done by Majin Buu so that Buu could live on Earth in peace.
- On one occasion, in an interview with Shonen Jump in 1995, Akira Toriyama stated that Goku is his favorite character from the series. In previous statements, he claimed that Piccolo was his favorite, and before this, that Tien was his favorite.
- In the Raging Blast video game series, Goku is the only character to have three ultimate attacks, which can be changed through customization.
- Goku appears in every anime feature in the series with the exception of Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock. He does however appear on the cover of the manga that the OVA was based on.
